I ask because some known streamers are playing it probably not because they want to play it, but because I think they feel an obligation to play it.
It reminds me of Artifact where some streamers went "down with the ship" (Stancifka, Gaara, etc.)
Do you remember when "Artifact was going to be future!!" --- yet there were tons of signs of trouble and then it collapsed.
I see this in every Mercenaries video. The game play looks boring. Streamers are playing Mercenaries only because the Hearthstone meta sucks badly right now and I don't get the sense they are enjoying playing it.
Not sure about artifact, but Merc's is definitely not good for streaming. I don't watch many streams of any games (I'd rather play than watch), but at least standard/arena/duels streams come with some suspence, strategy, RNG, top decks, etc. There are exciting moments in those modes. Mercenaries just isn't built that way. It's a grindy RPG. Who wants to watch someone else grind for experience points?
When this mode was first teased I was pretty excited. Then I read it wouldn't actually be using the cards. And I became worried.
I think I was right to worry. In my very short sample of Mercs it was very boring. I don't really see it getting much better wtih time. The play is just very linear.
That being said, if YOU like it, more power to you. Just not for me. I came here to play wizard poker.
Artifact had all that "ccg for HarDcoRe GamurZ" approach and was pay2play, while being an overcomplicated mess.
Mercenaries feels more like a beta than a complete mode and is less fun to watch than it is to play. I would compare it more to Duels than anything else.
Not just linear, it's just extremely repetitive, to the point, you are just repeating the same thing 10 hours in a row every day just to farm coins (if you are a Nerd like Thijs with nothing else to do in life, and I know the majority in here are worshipping their Nerdgod)
Now I know HS is much of the same, but at least you are done in 5 hours every week. That's how much time it requires to get Legend rank in a month for me, 20 hours max. with my Paladin deck.
Also at least you have a little bit of variety with changing Metas, new decks.... I don't get this feeling with Mercs at all, just the most dull, blant Gamemode you could possibly create and I'am already beyond sick of it.
Only Mr. Kotick himself could have come up with something so monotone & robotic like Mercenarie$.

Most streamers stream PvP which is not a grindy RPG. Some do grind on stream but that is until they get all they want. It is early to say if Merc PvP will become a popular mode.
Mercs is a complete mess. It should never have been released in this state. It shows that Blizz really doesn’t do much play testing, if any at all. There are glaring problems with every aspect of this mode, from the visuals, the gameplay, the appearance on mobile, the godawful PvP, the economy where you buy packs for gold but can’t earn gold… this is barely even a beta, definitely not a complete version and insane that they are charging for it. So on topic, I don’t think it’s artifact 2.0, there was actually a game there. Interest in mercenaries will drop dramatically after the mini set and once the 10 hero card expansion hits, mercenaries will be a distant memory.
I don't think anyone feels obligated to stream it. I think some of them think it's fun and want to see what kind of numbers they will get. You can't know something like that until you've done a few streams and made a few YT videos.
I agree that, due to the nature of the game mode, it's hard to make it interesting for others to watch, so even if players enjoy playing it, it may never perform well for content creators.

It doesn't stream well - many games don't. The economy within the mode is uber-greedy, with nothing to do with excess coins. I haven't even hit this wall yet, only those who really whaled the launch have I suspect, but knowing it is enough to put me off the grind.
That said, I think the mode is fun to play, as someone who enjoyed games like Darkest Dungeon, it is a more casual version of that with Blizzard flavour.
Artifact went straight off the cliff edge - I don't see this happening to Mercs, its going to bumble along in the background and every so often you'll play some of it, when not in the mood for ladder or battlegrounds, and that is fine with me.
I already consider the mode massively more successful ( and fun) than Duels ever was, even though I enjoyed Dungeon Runs.

I had several Mercs maxed out before I purchased 20 packs to help speed up the others. Sure, it is longwhile, but if you make yourself a plan and an Excel-sheet to keep track of things, it goes fast enough. Also, once something is done, it is done, meaning you can focus on something else. Which will be done as well. Rinse and repeat.
OT: I like the grind of Mercenaries. But that is only because I literally am a no lifer. I'm disabled, practically deaf, bound to my one-room apartment in my wheelchair, never getting outside, meaning I have been grinding for 16 hours a day for the past 4 days. I bought 20 packs a few hours ago, but that is and will be the only spending ever. While I wrote the previous paragraph, I cannot imagine ever completing all Mercs (esp. the legendaries which I still lack). I consider myself a rarity in the world with the amount of time spent, with a plan and goal. Meaning if I cannot imagine myself completing all Mercs even with 16 hours/day, the great majority of people will not. For let's face it: most people would like to play casual, perhaps 2 hours a day top, or less. They'll never ever even come close, time-wise. That's not even mentioning boredom-wise, for it gets boooorrrring. And that's exactly the problem for the streams: it's BORING to watch. I heard streamers complain about it, even on YouTube, like Regis saying: I just cannot possibly keep up man.
Wasnt really excited for the new game mode before release. Played it for a while, I think the mode is okay but way too grindy for me. Doing the same stuff over and over again its way too boring, because it really is the exact same stuff, normal hearthstone is different because you have to react to your opponent. When I see how many coins you need to get a merc or to upgrade stuff - boy thats a lot of time. Also the loading times n stuff is pretty annoying, not to mention that there is no auto-battle feature, cuz lets be honest, when youre grinding for coins you probably use the same heroes and the same spells.
I love watching BG streams but mercs? Hell no, not enjoyable watching some1 grind for coins/levels.

Is Mercenaries the new Artifact?

The two have/had different problems.

Even pvp is not a great streaming mode because there is so little strategy/variety involved.

not very streamable. but its very popular considering how many ppl are playing it
