15K is the cost you have to pay assuming you will lose 300 arena games and win ZERO. Getting average score 3-3 or 4-3 gives you pack and 50g each run and you can do better. Also you totally eradicate fun out of arena, you put it equal to mechanically opeing of dozens of packs, while arena is and always was f2p players first choice to see and play cards and combos they couldn't afford.
On a side note I'm not hyped for a single card out of this expansion, guess i won't buy any pack.

Your post would make much more sense if it wasnt in a thread started by a newer f2p player. Newer players are likely to be eaten alive in the arena. It may take 20 or more games to get good at it. That all depends on the knowledge they have of the cards, how they are played, and game play in general. If that happens they may get close to the packs someone who just bought them will, but I seriously doubt they will get 80 packs for that 10k gold. As fur the fun, well thats subjective. If they are losing a lot, it may not be much fun. It also assumes that the Arena is more fun than other modes of play. For some it might be, for others it will not. Then we look at the time factor. It will take 2 months of 2 Arena runs a day to get the 100 packs. 2 months and those runs will take up a lot of the average players game time. They then have to do quests to get gold and play tavern brawls.
Im not saying that Arena may be bad for established players who can afford to lose resources. It all depends on your risk tolerance. For a new players, who really cant afford to make mistakes by wasting resources its a big risk. Especially for f2p players who wont spend real world cash to make up the loss its even bigger.
Splitting the gold between packs and Arena? Your still going to end up with less packs and take a month to do the Arena runs. Its less of a risk, but still wastes resources for new players. Players who should imho be more focused on collection building and not wasting any resources.

Quests, its entirly possible to get 8k of gold between expansions, 10k with a little effort. They dont have to play ladder, casual is still a game play mode.
I'm still waiting for you to tell me which cards/packs last the longest.
Logging in every day just to get rid of a quest and have nothing in return is a chore not a game. Doing it for 4 months or a year is a pure madness. Especially if you are a recent f2p player with only few playable classes, so for example quest for winning 3 games with warrior is out of your reach.
Here's your answer: cards released as first expansion in a year have the longest life span of 24 months. So: Witchwood 24mths; Boomsday 20mths; Rastakhan 16mths.
BUT for now during release of rastakhan all listed above have exactly the same life in front of them, so saying rastakhan cards are most importants is way far from truth.
3 wins at Arena is better than buying a pack. You get the pack, around 40-50g back (which makes the run costs the same 100g as the pack), played a little bit and also get some dust back (25 dust is almost like dusting all the commons in a pack). Any amount of wins above that is just icing on the cake. 7 wins or more only if you care about going infinite on Arena (something most newbies shouldn't even bother worrying).
Thing is you need to know a little bit about it, and a new player might have trouble with that. It can also be a little disheartening to get 150g (usually 3 days of quests) and go 0-3 or 1-3 as you begin. I waited until I had like 4k gold or more to start some arenas (watching videos about it while gathering the gold) so I didn't go there as a newbie and wouldn't feel too bad for spending 450g at once and actually be short a pack and a half as I would still be high on gold.
So before going to the Arena that is my tip.
About disenchanting and crafting:
You shouldn't worry about crafting at all when you begin. You won't have the dust for anything relevant - you actually don't even know what is revelant and what isn't - and should just play and gather gold and resist the impulse to craft as dust is hard to come by.
When you finally do gather dust, you should go with the mindset to craft DECKS, not CARDS. That is, you should look for a specific deck you would like to play, see the cards you have for it and the ones you don't and calculate the total cost. If you can't craft the whole deck, then save the dust. Things may change dramatically over time and then you'll be glad you saved the dust (especially if it's near a new expansion, or even bigger, a rotation).
The worst mistake for a newbie is crafting cards for various classes. Something like: "I wish I had Blizzard for my Mage, I will craft one". Oh, Vilespine Slayer would work really nicely for my Rogue, gonna get at least one. And so on. In the end you'll end up many weak decks instead of a few strong ones.
For disenchanting, it ties with the craft decks not cards strategy. People say to disenchant goldens and duplicates, but for me, unless I really want a deck and disenchanting those would allow me to craft such deck, then it's better to actually keep them, even the duplicates.
Why is that? Because nerfs may happen and then you can collect full dust value for the deck. While everyone might have been dusting their duplicates of Possessed Lackeys and Dark Pacts, I kept the extra copies (including a few golden) I had and when they did get nerfed, I gained a really good chunk of dust.
Of course you can't predict what will be nerfed and won't, but again, if the dust you'll gain won't net you a deck, then just keep the card just in case.
You should also avoid dusting cards that are in Standard if you can. For example, I almost hit the maximum pity timer for Un'goro ( an expansion released in April of 2017) and opened a Clutchmother Zavas, considered a really terrible card. Then Rastakhan, the last expansion of the year, about to be released in December of 2018 is coming and seems to give Discard Warlock some tools, including discarding lowest cost card. Who knows, it might see some play now.
If not, then at the rotation at April I can safely disenchant it (again, if REALLY needed for something that dust from duplicates and golden cards won't give me - no point to just butcher your collection for nothing).
I remember months ago a guy was crying about having opened King Togwaggle after a lot of packs and immediately dusted it out of anger. Guess what, eight months later and two expansions, Togwaggle Druid is a legit good deck (even before the second expansion) and it is even being used at tournaments. There were even other classes using Togwaggle in ladder during some time.
So make the math and see if you should disenchant stuff. If it's not gonna give you a deck, you should hold to it (unless don't want/want to replace certain cards of said deck). If a deck would cost you 6000 dust, and disenchanting your golden cards, duplicates and supposedly bad cards would net you 2500, why do it? Keep it for later, you never known how things might change, what might be used or something might be nerfed.
I also have written down the amount of dust I can gather. For example, I have 3k dust, can get more 3k from duplicates and 9k from golden cards. Even though my dust display only shows 3k, I know I can get to 15k, but there's nothing I really want right now, specially with a new expansion about to be released, so I'll just keep the cards and only dust what is necessary if I want something later. And that 15k is not counting supposedly terrible cards (which I also have written down just to see how much total dust I could gather). If by rotation I still have duplicates and golden cards I don't bother with, then I'll safely disenchant them all then.
So be smart with the use of your resources, they don't come easily.

How fun is it to start two runs of Arena and have 0-3 and 1-3 and out runs? To end up paying 150 gold for a pack? You may do better, but you have been playing at least a year and 4 months. Are people who just started and have maybe 3 or 4 months in going to have the same win rate as you? Likely not. Is everyone going to do well at Arena and like it, No.
Here's your answer: cards released as first expansion in a year have the longest life span of 24 months. So: Witchwood 24mths; Boomsday 20mths; Rastakhan 16mths.
At release every card has the longest to play. You cant buy the first expansion of 2019 now. If you buy packs from the first expansion of this year at this point you still only have 16 months to play them. So your explanation is just nuts. Do you expect new players to skip an expansion?
BUT for now during release of rastakhan all listed above have exactly the same life in front of them, so saying rastakhan cards are most importants is way far from truth.
So it comes out. What I said was not false. "The fact is newly released cards in a pack are always the best value. They have the longest to play." Because the first expansion of 2019 isnt out yet. When its the newest expansion released it will have the longest to play. The rest of your statement is a straw man, a logical fallacy. No one said they were the "most important" but you. Its the best value at this point compared to sets that will rotate out soon for a new player (the subject of this thread). But go ahead and rant some more. Give all the advice you want. Its likely to be worthless and not helpful to a new player. But when has that ever stopped people from doing it on Hearthpwn.

Starting your journey having only basic sets and some free greetings packs you can be experienced in other card games a future tournament participator, but you won't do shit in standard without cards. You will have a hard time doing any simple quest or tawern brawl. For arena you can watch some tutorials, get arena companion. In arena there are no combos, no decks at all, you can't even predict what else your opponent can have in his hand. What's so hard in arena apart from choosing the right cards?
No one said they were the "most important" but you. Its the best value
Do you even see what you are typing lol
Once again couse you have some heavy problems reading: for now on all expansions of 2018 have the same life remaining [16months] and the same value and there is not a single reason to focus on rastakhan. Al expansion from 2017 have the same life remaining [4months] and are all not advised to craft.

It appears you have the reading problem. 1.First you ignore the topic of the thread. The topic isnt which cards have the longest left to play from one year but different years. The topic is should a new f2p player spend saved gold buying packs from sets that are going to rotate out in April 2019 or save the gold for the next expansion. Read it here if you missed it in a rush to post. Thats a VALUE question. 2.Then you post straw men. A Straw man is misinterpreting the statements of others and the context of the statements. Then posting something to knock down or refute the straw man you created. You either cant read, have horrible reading comprehension or are doing it on purpose. Again, on the topic or context of the thread, the next expansion has the best value for a newer f2p player. Last years sets have only 4 months left to play. Going on and on about how long sets from the same year have is just pure idiocy, a straw man.
So I'm not sure if I follow IDBY. After I get my guaranteed legendary from Rastakhan's Rumble packs what is the difference of buying those packs vs Boomsday or Witchwood? Wouldn't the choice depend on the deck I'm trying to make, since they all rotate out at the same time (April 2020)?
I ended up buying two more Frozen Throne packs and now I have Deathstalker Rexxar, Professor Putricide and Subject 9 so I was thinking about buying packs to build up whatever version of Secret Hunter is meta after the new expansion rolls in.

The choice is yours on which of this years sets to buy. I personally think that this next set has some good cards for the classes I play the most. I dont play a lot of Hunter, and the two Hunter legandaries have yet to be reveled, but there are some good value cards in the next set. The secret hunter deck is a good one. Most of the cards you need for the rest of the deck are cheap, being commons or rares. The strength of the deck is the Emerald Spellstone and the Eaglehorn Bow. Here is a deck that looks pretty standard. That being said some of the cards that make the deck good, including the Emerald Spellstone will rotate in April of 2019. But the cost of the cards you need for the deck is low. So its not a real big risk. Which deck list are you planning on using? If I were in your shoes I would wait until the rest of the expansion cards are reveled to see if any real fantastic cards are there. I would likely buy cards of just one set to maximize duplicates and get some dust. Then craft the Hunter deck. At least it will give you a reasonably strong meta deck. Keep in mind that with the release the meta changes, and some good decks may come out after release, so try and save some dust. Lastly, even though you are f2p, buy the welcome bundle for $4.99 if you can and haven't. Its at least 1 legendary dragon and 10 packs. Your collection needs lots of cards.
I've been looking at this list: https://www.hearthpwn.com/top-decks/179429-secrets-hunter and created an analog out of the cards I have. So far I enjoy it, but I'll definitely wait for the new expansion to go live before I do any crafting. 1000 dust needed for the remaining cards is a lot for me. Assuming that the archetype remains viable in the new meta, do you think it's good idea to craft the rare / epic cards for it that will rotate out? Or should I look for replacements among the cards that will last longer.
Also any advice on how to get a familiar with different classes / playstiles? I guess I was lucky with hunter because I got majority of the cards for a top level deck. But for most of other classes I don't have a single legendary, so I can't really experiment with them.
if you dont care about wild, then you are in luck! ww and tbd are low impact expansions from this year. Youll need baku, genn and azalina from ww and maybe hagatha. And from boomsday youll need zilliax for tempo decks, dr boom for control warrior. The others are not that good but in future they may be useful or fun.
So no need to spend gold if you are f2p and standard player

The problem is lack of cards in your collection, a common problem for someone just starting out. Collection building takes time. For a f2p player it takes a little longer but it is doable. I am more of a budget player. I only buy pre release deals when I have the money. You really lucked out and got 3 expensive pieces that fit into a higher tier deck. Crafting rares and an epic that will rotate to complete it is not that bad for a first good deck. Luckily the only epic in that list is 1 Snake Trap, and you have one. Always craft decks not specific cards except in rare cases like Baku the Mooneater. It opens up multiple decks where its likely the highest cost card. The way I got into playing different decks is to do what you have done. See what you get from packs and fill in around it. Filling in what you dont have is a good skill and is the first step in learning deck building.
All that being said, its well worth the wait for all the cards to be reveled before making the decision on which set to buy. Its a good idea to wait for the meta to settle (a week or two after release) before crafting new archetypes. I have a strong feeling secret hunter will be viable.
TLDR; don't buy packs if you expect to dust the cards you get, it's not worth it. Not even if you only go to the initial 10 pack pity timer for a legendary.
if you're a new player save your gold until end of amrch/early april, it's better to invest heavily in the first expansion of the year so that you have cards to play for 2 years,

At release every card has the longest to play. You cant buy the first expansion of 2019 now. If you buy packs from the first expansion of this year at this point you still only have 16 months to play them. So your explanation is just nuts. Do you expect new players to skip an expansion?

Dust does not burn a hole in the jar. Be careful what you craft, especially before and right after a rotation.
Do you even see what you are typing lol
Once again couse you have some heavy problems reading: for now on all expansions of 2018 have the same life remaining [16months] and the same value and there is not a single reason to focus on rastakhan. Al expansion from 2017 have the same life remaining [4months] and are all not advised to craft.
