I started playing exactly about 3 days ago, before that I've been watching "Disguised Toast" therefore I decided to start playing this game, now as any other new player I rushed through my levels and went into ranked, got max 18 then drop back all the way down to 20, so I decided to stop playing ranked seeing as I'm not achieving much by playing it, realizing that this game is an actual grind (unless you have a lot of money to spend) and the "classes/heroes" that I liked the most are mage, rogue and druid, so lets say I'm planning to spend around 50$ on packs, my question would be:
1. What packs should I buy depending on the hero I choose? 2. I'm coming from League of Legends, were if you don't know how to build a champion or play the champion, or know what's the meta, you can watch some specific streamers or youtubers to find out, (for what's meta an example would be LS from LoL)
I suggest that you buy only Classic packs this early in the game. Those are cards that are both strong and permanently remaining in the standard format. This is the best choice whatever hero you prefer to play mostly as
Edit: you can also search on this site for good "budget" decks to try out. These are cheap decks that often has potential to reach around rank 5
You have to drop at least 200-250$ if you wanna play 3 classes and you want to build you own decks for fun. Or drop 100$ and you can build 2 net decks.
buy mostly classic.. if you are planning on buying bulk, get a 40 pack of classic, then use gold to buy throne and ungoro cards as these are the newest expansions (you also want to save any dust for kobolds and catacombs, maybe some gold, too if you are not pre ordering)
I personally bought a 40 x classic pack when starting and a 7 x old gods pack and it got me well under way. You now have the welcome bundle which is crazy value, too. My GF got alexstraza, prophet vellen, and ala'kir all from those 10 packs and the bonus legendary (the rest of the cards were good as well)
Basic rule of thumb is to get mostly classic packs when you start out, until you have enough cards/dust to build what you want. it is worth getting the expansion cards as well though, but you can probs mostly build those cards from dust from the classic packs.
Search what cards you want and buy the packs for them. Don’t dust epics/legendaries ever. You will regret it later. Even really bad epics/legendaries. Sometimes they turn really fun when you build your own and in tavern brawl.
and generally (but not that you should buy them with money), you will get a legendary from each expansion within the first 10 packs. So you should get packs from every expansion at least until you open a leg. But you can buy them with ingame gold as well since you might get the leg in an early pack.
edit: as to the meta, you can check vicious syndicate or other meta snapshot sites. The decks mentioned there are the ones you will meet the most when it gets above the very low ranks.
I just started recently too. I suggest you buy the welcome pack and kobold pre-order. Don't worry too much about the meta since the meta deck will consist of cards from many expansions and it's best for you not to open any packs from old god and gagetzan since they will be rotated in about 4 months. Just build your deck with what you get from those packs and don't forgot to open frozen throne and ungoro packs too. You are guaranteed to get at least a legendary in the first 10 packs.
Quests like "play X cards of type Y" are doable in casual with little to no cards at all.
As for buying only classic packs, it depends on the deck you want to build - sometimes its better just to craft a couple cards needed instead of playing the pack roulette. You'll get a classic pack every tavern brawl anyway and sometimes some extra ones from watch&learn quest.

Will do as soon as I get a chance, and thanks to everyone for their suggestions/advice!

This looks reasonable if you can spend only ~50$ now, you'll have to spend another ~50$ in april and will be able to craft few meta decks in may (just don't rush). This game requires time and a patience. In the meantime, you can practice the arena with main and alter accounts, if you like it. Arena is a great way to get more dust for your gold, assuming you get 5+ average wins.
also, dont buy classic set. almost all legendaries and epic in classic are worthless. even for fun. blizzard designs totally different epics/legendaries now. you can craft the rares/commons you need from classic.
I started a month before Ungoro, not that long ago, so I know where your at.
The reality is that it takes some time to build a collection, that or tons of money. As others have pointed out, Dont buy from Gadgetzan or Whispers of the Old gods as they will rotate out of Standard in April 2018 and you wont have enough cards to play wild. Try not to craft cards from those sets either. Dont dust cards unless you are willing to craft them again, always ask on the forum before dusting a legendary. Buy the welcome bundle. Since you have not bought packs before you will get a legendary in the first 10 packs of any set. So buying 10 Ungoro or Knights of the Frozen Throne is a good idea as you will have a little over a year to play them and get at least 1 legendary from each set. If you can afford it the pre order deal for Kobolds and Catacombs is a good deal that will give you 10 extra packs for the money. Next do the daily quests and save your gold to buy packs of the April 2018 expansion. Some will suggest playing Arena, I wouldnt as a new player because you will be eaten alive, learn game play before playing Arena. Play the Tavern Brawl each week for a pack. Play the game on your computer, a tablet, and a phone for 1 free pack per device. Your going to lose a lot in the beginning, but learn from your mistakes. Disguised Toast has some good beginner decks, so you started on agood site for new players. Good luck.
I would first advice you to take Hearthstone for what it is : a sandbox where you experiment with hundreds of cards.
I am F2P (started after GvG release, only bought the welcome pack last year so I already had a robust collection) and never felt "grinding" the game.
Don't take to seriously a number and some stars next to your name. It does not bring much.
Play whatever you have fun with :)
If you want to spend money, as other mentionned it, the welcome pack is a good option.
Then with the new "Legendary guaranted in the 10 first packs" rules, buying packs from all available expansions (Old God, Mean street, Un'goro, Frozen Throne) till you get a legendary for each could be nice to give you a panel of everything.
Then I would spend the rest on Classic pack to give you a good basis for deckbuilding.
After that spend your gold on whatever expansion pack you like.
PS : if you really having fun climbing the ladder with metadeck, do it :) It's just not my cup of tea ;)
And nobody mentionned it, but you should go to arena ASAP. Great way to build your card collection and learn the game basics imo
I strongly recommend you don’t do that! Arena can be very profitable when you are good. Otherwise, you’ll lose gold on it. Keep in mind that for every win someone else loses. As you need 4-5 wins to make a profit and it’s game over after 3 losses, guess where you are going to be in the first months.
Take some time to fully grasp the basics of the game, and then go to arena. If not, you’ll just make the rest of us happy with an easy win.

If you wanna have fun and not grind, drop 50$ per month on this game. It’s worth it. The grind make you hate the game.

But I most likely will end up building a rogue deck so would let's say 50$ be enough apart from the welcome pack?

Don’t listen to people and buy classic packs. Focus on the decks you want. Most classic cards are unplayed and they get weaker every set.

The welcome bundle is the best value for money.

You can also grab the 3 free packs from Samsung , and optionally a couple more for playing on different devices.
As a new player, probably the best option for now is a cheap midrande/aggro hunter, you can easily get to some rank 10 with it.
You can see some sample list here , replace Kindly Grandmother with any cheap beast (even Timber Wolf will do), ignore Deathstalker Rexxar if you don't have it; you can put say Cobalt Scalebane in its place.

yeah 50$ should be more than enough if you dust. But youre wasting money if you dust too much.
also, golden cards dont really come around again. so try to keep the ones you really like. you prob wont ever pull them again.

If you are in your first year of playing please read this post.
Dust does not burn a hole in the jar. Be careful what you craft, especially before and right after a rotation.
I suggest you don't buy anything yet
Don't mind me just passing by
