For years i really disliked the direction Blizzard took card design wise. I really enjoyed the game until somewhere around the Whispers of the old Gods release and the Standard/Wild split. Afterwards the randomness got completely out of hand.
Now with Classic we have Hearthstone back as it used to be. Turn‘s out it wasn‘t all nostalgia about the old decks.
It feels so good to have a somewhat predictable gameplay again without every second game turning into some crazy rng clown fiesta at some point.
You can finally properly play around cards again. Once youve seen/baited both Swipes/Brawls/Flamestrikes you know there is not going to be a 3rd. In Standard/Wild you never know. With all the randomness, discover, cards generating other cards, etc. it is almost impossible to know your opponents hand anymore. Against some decks it could literally be anything, even cards from other classes.
There might be less wacky stuff going on and matchups play out more similar each game. But man, it feels so much more rewarding to be rewarded for knowing the meta decks card by card, playing around cards/combos and being able to have a pretty good guess what the opponent might have in their hand based on the cards they already played.
Anyone else feels the same? In“ really hope people actively play this format. If it is a massive success it might have an positive impact on future card design.
As someone who’s played since beta, it’s just nostalgia for me. Yeah you’re not wrong in that it’s much simpler and there’s not all this random generation, but it also gets stale very quickly.
Discover, for the flaws that it has, is just a fun mechanic. It lets you play out games in a way you otherwise wouldn’t. Classic is mostly just vanilla, tempo based play styles with little flash.
I never played in 2014. I'm trying classic now. 75% of my opponents are miracle Rogue. Just boring that I keep seeing the same deck. I'm already bored.

I mean it's fun but the problem is that it'll stay fun for a couple more days and that's it. The meta is figured out, it has been figured out for 7 years and the good and best decks won't change, maybe they'll get very slightly refined (and i mean like 1 card out 1 card in) and there's nothing more to the format. I think it's a format you'll play from time to time when you get burned from whatever your main format is but in reality the format is just stale from the very beginning. Every class has realistically just 1 deck that works and then Warlock has 2 in Handlock and Zoo. You can try your "interesting" homebrew but it'll just get slapped by the meta decks. The problem is that the meta will never feel refreshing, the meta is what we have now and won't change and at least for me that's an issue.
I started playing in beta and since game release the amout of RNG has grown exponentially. the reasons is, imho, that they made the collecting part of the game wrong, letting people craft the cards they want. This + Internet = every single game is the same. Do you remember Secret Pala? or Pirate Warrior? All games were the same, everybody netdecked the top deck at the time (and this was really sad during Fireside Gatherings that were made to let people meet and share ideas). Today games are much more unpredictable but just thanks to RNG. I'd have liked Hearthsone be more about collecting cards and using what you have (I am unsure about the option to trade/buy/sell cards with others, but I think that craftable cards have been a bad idea)

I didn't play until quite some time after launch, I can't speak for classic but since I started playing around Karazan but only really properly some point in KoFT, I feel the game has gotten better and better and as such, I've no real desire to play classic.
I used to play for about 4-6 weeks after an expansion but its now at the point I'm playing across different game modes for the whole expansion duration.
I feel like the cards have gotten more fun, the games less tedious and predictable and the rage of archetypes/viable decks just seems the highest I've ever known.
I've seen a lot of doomsaying about the game, including repeated claims it's dying/dead for years now. I saw the meltdown some people had at that Brode guy leaving and I personally don't really get the fuss. I think the game is way better, personally.
I should add though that if you're enjoying it more, OP, then good for you. I'd hope there's some way of extending the life of classic because I'm sure there are others like you. Possibly end up bringing on the first expansions, up to the point of the standard/wild split.
Maybe they will see how engaged people are and then decide whether to put anytime/further development into it.
Not my bag but I can see why it's appealing for others, hopefully it can remain that way for you all.
Classic definitely is more simplistic, and reminds me that Hearthstone was originally designed to be a primarily mobile game, it will be my mode to play whenever I am out of the house.
In the early days I played on mobile all the time.
In recent years I played 99% of the time on PC, as I could not imagine playing any modern archetype without a deck tracker application. Standard and especially Wild have a lot more to consider.
Yeah, come back in a month and tell us if you still feel that way. I'm not trying to ruin your fun, by all means enjoy it while you can. I only say this because classic is essentially nothing but miracle rogue, hand lock, zoo lock and freeze mage. There may be another deck or two floating around out there but these were the tier 1 decks of their time and if you played another class, you were immediately at a disadvantage. After a few weeks of playing against your 8th+ miracle rogue in a row, I suspect the nostalgia will wear off.
I hope they will support this mode with seasonal events, such as "Hallow's End". A bunch of cards from previous sets would keep the mode fresh and fun!
Theres a reason rng got more prevalent in later expansions: predictable matchups = boring game in the long run. They went overboard with it and are now toning it down, I think standard post rotation will bring the best of both worlds. Classic will last until then, its stale already.

This. Quite honestly if they don‘t address Auctioneer+Conceal (which they never will) this will be a dead mode in a few weeks.
It is pretty funny how every person claiming "classic is all about decks XYZ" has a different opinion about which decks those are. After playing far too much lately, I have faced: combo druid (several versions), miracle rogue (2 main versions), handlock, zoolock, MURlock, freeze mage, tempo mage (not viable), control warrior, face warrior, mid-range shaman, mid-range paladin, mid-range Hunter and face hunter. I am pretty sure that isn't everything either.
Many matchups also feel pretty fair, and come down to skill. What bugs me a lot, though, is the lack of defensive cards while some removal, silence and burst cards are insanely strong. Druid is the worst offender, but I have been finished out of the blue from hand by every class.
They obviously left a lot of design space for future cards, the 7 slot is empty except for Druid and Control warrior, and the 9 and 10 slots are very weak as well. It is amazing how a 5-5 was a reasonable minion to put on board on turn 7, Dr. Boom changed that forever, and even he is considered weak and slow nowdays...

Yep same here.
Yeah...no.
