I am currently trying my very best to make an innovative Priest deck as I want it to be fun again. And in order for that I want to make the deck more interactive. For this purpose, I want to avoid including too many removals, so that I have space for including more other cards that synergize better.
So, my question to you is:
What is more consistent - having more card draw like through Cleric, Acolyte+Pyromancer combos in order to get your few removals more consistently or just packing in all removals you have and therefore improving the chance to draw into one of them?
I try to avoid going for the second option as it isn't good enough currently.
Depends on your matchups .. board clear are better in aggro matchup and draw/value card are good agaimst control . I think 2 excavate+ 2 circle/heal are enough for zoo/shaman marchup
I'd vote for the first option as well. We simply don't have really good cards like Ravaging Ghoul or Twilight Flamecaller and have to make do with crappy 2-card comboes like Auchenai + Circle and Pyromancer + Coin to survive against aggro. Inconsistent as hell. It's better to draw a lot and dig deeper looking for those pieces than to wait and pray to draw one of your 8 removal options. Because it seriously hardly ever seems to work out right. I can't count the times I got stuck with 2 circles or 2 Pyromancers and nothing to use them with.
Oh thanks, a second Entomb on turn 3! Helpful, thank you RNGesus. Sylvanas turn 4? Die in a fire, Hearthstone.
I think draw into limited removal is more important as you can cycle through your deck to gain access to the other important cards that are crucial for your win condition (controlling the board, gaining heal cards, Drawing Alexstrasza). You might want to reconsider using Northshire Cleric perhaps? I don't think your deck really has the potential to utilize Northshire Cleric consistently. I may be wrong however, just my opinion.
Last night I put way more cycle into my decks and they performed so much better, it was surprising, I feel like I have discovered one of the secrets of standard priest at the moment, you need tons of cycling to draw all your answers. We all know the achilles heel of priest ATM is that if you dont draw the corresponding answers, you lose. Cycling seems to solve that problem as long as you can accomplish it without thinning out your decklist too much, which is also not easy.
Yes I can confirm, I had bigger success with more cycling. I especially try not to use Excavated Evil, as I dislike the card. The problem with cycling though is that your matchups become more lopsided, as you get better vs. Aggro, but worse against Control...
Generally card draw is the key to make a deck consistent. Worgen otks or even patron warriors are a good example for this. Removal or 2 for 1 minions take you to the long game or fatigue usually. You should add card draw or removal depending on your win condition
Think of why Renolock and Freeze Mage are strong decks. They have a few sets of removal, sure, but they also run LOTS of draw. Warlock hero power plus the occasional Azure Drake, Mage is now running Novice Engineer on top of all the other draw...
If they find all the pieces in time, it's gg.

Sorry but IMO excavated is absolutely necessary at the moment, there are so many situations where Holy Nova is completely dead but excavated will conversely save your ass.

That's why I always run (at least) one. Though Zetalot hasn't used one recently and fared quite well with it.
There is still Acolyte of Pain or even Loot Hoarder or Bloodmage Thalnos for more draw. Not optimal, but ok choices. I also believe Cleric still is solid enough to warrant a place in a Priest deck.
As stated before, card draw is great against slow decks, but bad vs aggro. Depending on what you're facing on ladder, using a deck without card draw and just relying on a good curve may actually improve your winrate. Removals are a must. But I don't like all the decks that run 2x entomb, those seem to be more suited for control matchups. Holy Smite is actually very useful for tempo, despite having less value than other forms of removals.

I think removals are better for those decks that plan to survive up to a certain comb/burst.
If you need consistency, my vote is on value cards (ofc with some efficient wipes).

Problem is priest doesnt have a lot of synergistic draw these days. Cleric is not a good fit at the moment, IMO
Card draw is what makes a deck consistent. Whether or not your deck needs more removal is a whole separate matter, unrelated to card draw.
