Looking at the last announced cards of the Knights of the Frozen Throne expansion, I could not but notice how interesting new Mage cards are. This is my prediction for a brand-new deck. Something we've never seen before.
Ultimate Control Mage
Early Game
- Drawing cards with Arcanologist and Arcane Intellect.
- Generating value with Primordial Glyph and Pyros.
- Using Frostbolt and Medivh's Valet as efficient single-target removals.
Mid Game
- Using strong single-target removals such as Fireball and Polymorph to keep control of the situation.
- Using efficient AoE removals such as Blizzard and Flamestrike to slow down the game.
- Clearing the board with the devastating Frost Nova + Doomsayer combo.
- Using Firelands Portal for a really nice tempo swing (removal + minion).
Late Game
- Upgrading your elementals and hero power with Frost Lich Jaina.
- Insane lifesteal synergy with Pyros and Baron Geddon.
- Extra value from Medivh, the Guardian and The Lich King.
Updates
08/08/17: - 2x Mana Wyrm, + Bloodmage Thalnos, + Ice Barrier. Mana Wyrm is not that impactful in this deck: we don't need to be so aggressive, minions should be used to trade in the early game. Bloodmage Thalnos is great: in one card you have a cheap +1 spell damage and draw engine. You could even ping it, after playing Frost Lich Jaina, to get a Water Elemental. It has synergy with N'Zoth, the Corruptor, too. Ice Barrier is useful against aggro decks and makes cards that interact with secrets more consistent.
11/08/17: - Medivh, the Guardian, + Polymorph. Thank you for your advices. Medivh, the Guardian is too slow and greedy for this deck, we already have several late game cards. An extra Polymorph can be very useful to improve our survivability, instead and has great synergy with Frost Lich Jaina. It's a sort of "6 mana, silence and destroy an enemy minion, summon a Water Elemental". Someone suggested Blazecaller, but I don't like the idea, because you must play an elemental in the previous turn in order to activate its effect and there aren't many elementals in this deck, so it doesn't look consistent enough.
22/08/17: - 2x Babbling Book, - Arcanologist, - Ice Barrier, - Volcanic Potion, - Firelands Portal, - Sindragosa, - N'Zoth, the Corruptor, + 2x Doomsayer, + 2x Frost Nova, + Blizzard, + Skulking Geist, + Medivh, the Guardian, + The Lich King. First of all I want to thank pennyyyy and khanhdop6, the users who suggested these changes in the comment section. Let's start with the inclusion of Doomsayers and Frost Novas, strong cards which will probably clear the board if used together. I also added an extra Blizzard to make this combo more consistent. I decided to cut Babbling Books, an Arcanologist, Ice Barrier and Volcanic Potion, because Babbling Books have a weak body, do not always provide good spells and thus are not good in the early game, a survivability tool such as Ice Barrier isn't needed since every elemental has Lifesteal after Frost Lich Jaina is played and therefore one Arcanologist is enough for the remaining Ice Blocks, finally Volcanic Potion isn't needed anymore with the addition of the stronger Frost Nova + Doomsayer combo. I decided to change Firelands Portal, Sindragosa and N'Zoth, the Corruptor with Skulking Geist, Medivh, the Guardian and The Lich King, since this deck is desperately in need of a tech card to deal with Jade Druids and the legendaries I chose when I first created this deck are too slow and not suitable for this meta-game.
Legendary Card Replacements and Crafting Priorities
These changes are not recommended if you wish to play a competitive and consistent deck. They are fit for those who are on a budget, though, or just want to play this deck for fun.
- Pyros. The value this card provides is unique and can't be replaced properly. Replacement: Elise the Trailblazer, Tar Creeper, Water Elemental.
- Baron Geddon. It is extremely good in this deck, because - once Frost Lich Jaina is played - it combines AoE Damage and hero healing. Replacement: Elise the Trailblazer, Volcanic Potion, Flamestrike.
- Bloodmage Thalnos. The versatility of this card helps in a lot of situations. Sometimes, +1 spell damage saves you when you're in a dangerous situation, whereas the card draw is useful when your hand looks bad. Replacement: Loot Hoarder, Novice Engineer.
- The Lich King*. This card provides a lot of value which can be useful in every situation, both in aggro and in control match-ups. Notice that the taunt body can slow down aggressive decks, giving you time to react. Replacement: Elise the Trailblazer.
- Medivh, the Guardian*. This card is a great deal in almost any mage deck, because it allows the player not only to use spells in order to remove enemy threats, but also to generate tempo with random minions on his side of the board, thus forcing his opponent to deal with them. Replacement: Elise the Trailblazer.
*These cards can be replaced together with Sindragosa and N'Zoth, the Corruptor, which are significantly slower but provide a lot of value in the late game.
Frost Lich Jaina can't be replaced, because it's the core of the deck.
Thank you, guys, for all the upvotes you gave to this deck. I am not a pro player, though and this deck may not be perfect. If you want to give me some advice to improve it, that will be appreciated. Special thanks to pennyyyy and khanhdop6, two users that contributed a lot to an improved version of the deck.
My bad, i actually thought that the standard rotation is not based on a bi-annual cycle but on an expansion release and there's always a set amount of expansions in a standard rotation, so i thought that once a new expansion releases, an old one goes away. So basically in April (or whenever new expansion releases) next year we will loose The Old Gods AND Gadgetzan at once?
Yeah, in april Gadegtzan, Karazhan and Old Gods will rotate out. No more jades, pirates and secret mages
To anyone wondering why [card]N'Zoth, the Corruptor[/card] with so little Deathrattles, he's running Pyros. That alone is kind of justifyable, since, if you get the 2/2 and the 6/6 to die on the board, you're already getting 8/8 worth of stats plus the 5/7 plus 3 more Pyros( 6/6 10/10 10/10 ).
And he's also running Sindragosa, which summons 2 Frozen Champions. That is surely a lot of value too.
I know what deck I'm going to play when the new update drops!
would baron geddon heal for all the AOE it deals after you play frost lich?
That's not the point, I guess. Cards such as Shadowflame and Blade Flurry deal damage equal to a minion's attack, so it's not the minion that is dealing damage, but the spell. Therefore the Anomalus interaction should heal you. However, it's just too slow unless you kill it right after you play the card and it has bad synergy with N'Zoth, the Corruptor. This is why I chose Baron Geddon over Anomalus.
