Looking at the last announced cards of the Knights of the Frozen Throne expansion, I could not but notice how interesting new Mage cards are. This is my prediction for a brand-new deck. Something we've never seen before.
Ultimate Control Mage
Early Game
- Drawing cards with Arcanologist and Arcane Intellect.
- Generating value with Primordial Glyph and Pyros.
- Using Frostbolt and Medivh's Valet as efficient single-target removals.
Mid Game
- Using strong single-target removals such as Fireball and Polymorph to keep control of the situation.
- Using efficient AoE removals such as Blizzard and Flamestrike to slow down the game.
- Clearing the board with the devastating Frost Nova + Doomsayer combo.
- Using Firelands Portal for a really nice tempo swing (removal + minion).
Late Game
- Upgrading your elementals and hero power with Frost Lich Jaina.
- Insane lifesteal synergy with Pyros and Baron Geddon.
- Extra value from Medivh, the Guardian and The Lich King.
Updates
08/08/17: - 2x Mana Wyrm, + Bloodmage Thalnos, + Ice Barrier. Mana Wyrm is not that impactful in this deck: we don't need to be so aggressive, minions should be used to trade in the early game. Bloodmage Thalnos is great: in one card you have a cheap +1 spell damage and draw engine. You could even ping it, after playing Frost Lich Jaina, to get a Water Elemental. It has synergy with N'Zoth, the Corruptor, too. Ice Barrier is useful against aggro decks and makes cards that interact with secrets more consistent.
11/08/17: - Medivh, the Guardian, + Polymorph. Thank you for your advices. Medivh, the Guardian is too slow and greedy for this deck, we already have several late game cards. An extra Polymorph can be very useful to improve our survivability, instead and has great synergy with Frost Lich Jaina. It's a sort of "6 mana, silence and destroy an enemy minion, summon a Water Elemental". Someone suggested Blazecaller, but I don't like the idea, because you must play an elemental in the previous turn in order to activate its effect and there aren't many elementals in this deck, so it doesn't look consistent enough.
22/08/17: - 2x Babbling Book, - Arcanologist, - Ice Barrier, - Volcanic Potion, - Firelands Portal, - Sindragosa, - N'Zoth, the Corruptor, + 2x Doomsayer, + 2x Frost Nova, + Blizzard, + Skulking Geist, + Medivh, the Guardian, + The Lich King. First of all I want to thank pennyyyy and khanhdop6, the users who suggested these changes in the comment section. Let's start with the inclusion of Doomsayers and Frost Novas, strong cards which will probably clear the board if used together. I also added an extra Blizzard to make this combo more consistent. I decided to cut Babbling Books, an Arcanologist, Ice Barrier and Volcanic Potion, because Babbling Books have a weak body, do not always provide good spells and thus are not good in the early game, a survivability tool such as Ice Barrier isn't needed since every elemental has Lifesteal after Frost Lich Jaina is played and therefore one Arcanologist is enough for the remaining Ice Blocks, finally Volcanic Potion isn't needed anymore with the addition of the stronger Frost Nova + Doomsayer combo. I decided to change Firelands Portal, Sindragosa and N'Zoth, the Corruptor with Skulking Geist, Medivh, the Guardian and The Lich King, since this deck is desperately in need of a tech card to deal with Jade Druids and the legendaries I chose when I first created this deck are too slow and not suitable for this meta-game.
Legendary Card Replacements and Crafting Priorities
These changes are not recommended if you wish to play a competitive and consistent deck. They are fit for those who are on a budget, though, or just want to play this deck for fun.
- Pyros. The value this card provides is unique and can't be replaced properly. Replacement: Elise the Trailblazer, Tar Creeper, Water Elemental.
- Baron Geddon. It is extremely good in this deck, because - once Frost Lich Jaina is played - it combines AoE Damage and hero healing. Replacement: Elise the Trailblazer, Volcanic Potion, Flamestrike.
- Bloodmage Thalnos. The versatility of this card helps in a lot of situations. Sometimes, +1 spell damage saves you when you're in a dangerous situation, whereas the card draw is useful when your hand looks bad. Replacement: Loot Hoarder, Novice Engineer.
- The Lich King*. This card provides a lot of value which can be useful in every situation, both in aggro and in control match-ups. Notice that the taunt body can slow down aggressive decks, giving you time to react. Replacement: Elise the Trailblazer.
- Medivh, the Guardian*. This card is a great deal in almost any mage deck, because it allows the player not only to use spells in order to remove enemy threats, but also to generate tempo with random minions on his side of the board, thus forcing his opponent to deal with them. Replacement: Elise the Trailblazer.
*These cards can be replaced together with Sindragosa and N'Zoth, the Corruptor, which are significantly slower but provide a lot of value in the late game.
Frost Lich Jaina can't be replaced, because it's the core of the deck.
Thank you, guys, for all the upvotes you gave to this deck. I am not a pro player, though and this deck may not be perfect. If you want to give me some advice to improve it, that will be appreciated. Special thanks to pennyyyy and khanhdop6, two users that contributed a lot to an improved version of the deck.
Lifesteal Pyros is amazing. Personally, I wouldn't
I think you're wrong. While I understand the traditional usage of Medivh, The Gaurdian in a control mage where you are hitting for value, I think that your spells take on a different element here (no pun intended XD). While I agree that Lich King may not be the replacement for it, I think Medivh is too slow as you need your spells to clear the board before you play him. If you're in the lead you can play it Medivh and not be worried about a minion buster like Polymorph because the weapon remains. But if you are ever behind, playing him just feels so slow because you have to wait until the next turn to board clear. I really think that something that generates more tempo like Blazecaller would fit better as a tempo swing.
Building around the DK and elements to out control by healing through elementals will be the way to go, using spells for board control to ensure you have it easy at that point, instead of being on the defensive with the loss of tempo from Medihv.
Sorry if I am a little repetitive, it's late.
While Medivh, the Guardian has helped me win a game, it was too greedy and too slow. Better things to do on turn 8.So he removed it.
I would cut the Sindragosa for a Meteor or a second Blizzard if the meta keeos being aggro oriented
After theorycrafting my own version of this deck, I decided to check out what you had made. I agree with most of the cards, but have a few changes. I think Medivh, the Guardian and N'Zoth, the Corruptor are both too greedy. Since you will be able to spawn a bunch of 3/6 lifesteals with your hero power, you should focus on winning with those and your burn already in the deck. I cut those two and the Mana Wyrms . I understand that Mana Wyrms are good early, but they often get killed immediately and get almost no value unless you get exactly Frostbolt or Primordial Glpyh on 2, and even then they can die to Fiery War Axe, Wrath, Frostbolt, or Shadow Word: Pain. I added Yogg-Saron, Hope's End as a win condition in case you don't draw Jaina or fall too far behind too quickly. Then, I added Bloodmage Thalnos, which provides draw potential, spell damage, and a 1 health target for you hero power, which is exactly what the deck needs. The last 2 spots I used for Frost Novas. I think they are very good to stall and give you extra draws. It is incredibly good against Paladin (aggro and "midrange"), Token Shaman, and Aggro Druid. It is okay against Pirate Warrior too, so I think it can provide the survivability to get to Frost Lich Jaina and then snowball from there.
I was just thinking about replacing Medivh, the Guardian with The Lich King, I really could use your opinion...
Thanks for your reply. I have Medivh, the Guardian and probably I can't craft The Lich King after I complete this deck so If you've accepted this replacement It was going to be a big problem for me...
I just thought instead of him a little survivalibility would be better, but as I can see, I was wrong. Medivh, the Guardian as you said has synergy with all the high cost spells this deck runs which is very nice. Thanks for enlightening me! ^^
Deck seems pretty epic, will try it for sure. But seems more greedy than viable! :D
The only issue I have with this is that you run 2x Arcanologist, 2x Medivh's Valet and only 2 secrets. Isn't that a bit of an overkill?
If you have better ideas and think these cards should be replaced, feel free to comment. Honestly, I'm not a Mage expert at all! XD
Your ELEMENTALS have lifesteal and you only have 2? What are you going to do, wait until after you play Frost Lich before you play Baron? Sounds like a horrible gameplan.
hero power and battle cry of flj
Great deck, but I would like to replace N`Zoth with Yogg.
This is a Wild deck i'm supposing, since The Old Gods won't be in Standard rotation after expansion releases?
Na...it just rotated with Ungoro. Next rotation comes in April
