Introduction:

Hey all! I'm Elmo and I've been playing hearthstone since closed beta which i was able to make a top 100 publish. I have recently picked up hearthstone again as a competitive hobby. Despite working full time as tech support I manage to log 6-8+ hours a day depending on work. I decided to make this guide as a way to help people analyze the pirate deck differently. It is another pirate deck, i'll address that later. But, not everyone understands the thought process behind it. I believe it would be an ideal training wheels deck for anyone as they climb to legends, high rank, or tournament play. It is not going anywhere anytime soon and is worth studying no matter what you play.

Future Stream:

I will be starting to stream within the next week or so. I'll go over a lot more play choices/matchup specifics there. Will update this guide with a link in case anyone is interested.

PIRATE HATERS!!!:

I am aware this is just another pirate deck and I'm not the first person to make this list... That does not mean I should not and can't share this deck. It is extremely powerful, offers room to learn and is fairly cheap. It's available to most of the community and you will not see less of it. I am only trying to guide people who I can help to reach their goals. I'm not trying to argue over a card game so don't come at me with your pent up pirate rage ;).

The Legendary Rant/Tech Recommendations (Budget):

As a player who doesn't splurge much on this game I recognize that it's not always possible to play the decks you'd like due to lack of cards. This doesn't need to hold you back. With Pirate cheese you can afford to play an overpowered deck! I will say that I strongly recommend Patches the Pirate as he thins your deck, is a pirate and a 1/1 charge. However, Leeroy Jenkins is not completely necessary as this deck has plenty of other ways to close the game out.

Leeroy Jenkins could be replaced by any of the following cards:

Tech Cards:

Listed from highest recommended to lowest. (All are good replacements though)

-Naga Corsair: This card would add to your pirate synergy and is also a 6/4 value with weapon, or a 5/4 body for 4. It's a very solid card and would be included in my original list if I felt there was room for him.

-Golakka Crawler: Oh the crab infestation that is hearthstone right now. This card is so good when it procs and even when it doesn't it's still a 2/3 body (River Croc) which is awkward to deal with for a lot of decks. Include this if you are fighting a lot of Pirate,Rogues or token Druids.

-Bittertide Hydra: The Hydra can carry games sometimes but he's also risky due to his card text. People can abuse this by spamming 1 or 2 attacks into it until it dies, essentially boosting damage to your face while handling this threat. If you enjoy high rolling and are not seeing many token Druids/Hunters go crazy and grab this guy.

-Secret Eater: I disagree with this tech choice, however it was worth a mention. This card is absolute carnage to freeze mage if used correctly. It is also a 2/4 body for 4 mana which is just awful. I would only include this in a counter que pirate deck or if you really want to stick it to those mages.

-Reckless Rocketeer: Only pick this card if you are extremely budget but I would honestly recommend Hunter until you have more dust for Pirate as it's more efficient when you don't have many cards.

-Argent Commander: This is a weaker Reckless Rocketeer that can trade pretty smoothly. Only issue is the mana drop (6) is a bit high for what this deck wants to do and for 4 attack it's not very worth it. If you can try to go with one of the higher options, unless you really want this minion to trade.. turn 6.

Mulligans/Matchups:

In this section I'll go over some of the most prominent meta deck I've played against in my climb. At face value, pirate seems straight forward. But, there's a lot of ways you can increase your win rate against particular decks by playing efficiently. Each class in this section will consist of mulligans, card techs and matchup strategy.

Mulligans will be listed from most important to least. Last listed cards will have a parenthesis such as weapon or curve (see below). If the cards do not have the parenthesis you can assume they are safe to keep but keep in mind you generally want a turn 1 pirate, or a very solid turn 2 with coin.

Weapon: Keep these when you have a low cost weapon, i.e. N'Zoth's First Mate or Fiery War Axe.

***DREAD CORSAIR NOTE! When I say Dread Corsair (Weapon) You need either Fiery War Axe or a N'Zoth's First Mate combo'd with Bloodsail Cultist or Upgrade! to be worth keeping.

Curve: These cards you can keep depending on how well your other cards are and if you have coin or not. You generally only keep these cards when you know you'll be in a good spot turn 2-3 to play them.

Taunt Warrior (Unfavored):

Mulligan: N'Zoth's First Mate, Southsea Deckhand, Fiery War AxeBloodsail Raider, Upgrade!, Southsea Captain (Curve), Bloodsail Cultist (Curve/Weapon), Frothing Berserker (Curve), Dread Corsair (Weapon)

Playstyle: This is, in my opinion the hardest match-up you will face on your climb. It has so many tools to deal with aggro decks that it's almost not fair. To win against this deck you will need to play correctly and have a little bit of luck on your side. Try to avoid going in to much with minions as they will be cleared extremely easily. Watch out for Ravaging Ghoul Turn 3 or being coined on turn 2. You will also want to hold Spellbreaker for silencing his Alley Armorsmith or a big taunt to get more dmg onto his face. Try to play sticky minions and when you can buff your pirates with Bloodsail Captain to prevent board wipes. Build up board (pressure) and force them to spend mana to defend themselves, you could keep tempo and end up winning the game. I've raged conceded many times versus this deck, perfect example of rock beating scizzors. Winnable, but tough.

Freeze Mage (Slightly Unfavored):

Mulligan: N'Zoth's First Mate,  Southsea Deckhand, Fiery War AxeBloodsail Raider, Upgrade!, Southsea Captain (Curve), Bloodsail Cultist (Curve/Weapon), Frothing Berserker (Curve), Dread Corsair (Weapon)

Playstyle: This match relies around you having a very strong start and being able to keep applying pressure (board/damage) to them before it is too late in the game. Usually you will not be trading much in this matchup because you should be opting to do the most face damage ASAP. They run x2 Ice Block and Ice Barrier so you will have to hope you can do enough damage to pull off lethal 1-3 times. Also be sure to play around their mass aoes/freezes such as Doomsayer + Frost Nova or Blizzard. One of the harder wins to pull off but as long as luck is on your side and you play correctly you can manage at least a 40% win rate here.

Pirate Warrior (Sick Matchup Dude):

Mulligan: N'Zoth's First Mate, Southsea Deckhand, Fiery War Axe, Golakka Crawler , Bloodsail RaiderUpgrade!Bloodsail Cultist (Curve/Weapon), Dread Corsair (Weapon), Southsea Captain (Curve), Frothing Berserker (Curve)

Playstyle: The mirror match comes down to efficient trading and luck (of course). If you are going second with N'Zoth's First Mate  you will naturally have a stronger turn 1 than your opponent. Hold onto your Golakka Crawler for bigger pirates than 1 drops. There is also going to come a point in the game where you need to stop trading and out value them on board and try to go for the kill (Rush). Be careful of your enemies HP if it falls below 12 he will have Mortal Strike to dish out 6 damage for 4 mana with. ALWAYS calculate damage and plan your turns out, there's no rush on your turns so make sure you play it right!

Quest Rogue (Highly Favored):

Mulligan: N'Zoth's First Mate, Southsea Deckhand, Fiery War Axe, Golakka Crawler , Bloodsail RaiderUpgrade!Bloodsail Cultist (Curve/Weapon), Southsea Captain (Curve), Frothing Berserker (Curve), Dread Corsair (Weapon)

Playstyle: This is where we get our free wins from. Seriously, I have probably only lost a hand full of times to this deck and it was because they had a ridiculous chain with Glacial Shard. You need to apply constant damage to the face and if you have to value trade or kill a quest minion. Very easy matchup overall and should not be sweated.

Miracle Rogue (Favored):

Mulligan: N'Zoth's First Mate, Southsea Deckhand, Fiery War Axe, Golakka Crawler , Bloodsail RaiderUpgrade!Bloodsail Cultist (Curve/Weapon), Southsea Captain (Curve), Frothing Berserker (Curve), Dread Corsair (Weapon)

Playstyle: Very similar playstyle to Quest rogue. You will want to rush them down ASAP but need to be a little more carefully because they are able to build tempo sooner than quest. You may have to trade efficiently to leave awkward minions on board that he would have to overkill. By turn 4 or 5 you should be coming close to the kill and have a few finisher cards in hand. Should not be too much of a problem as long as draw/mulligans are mediocre.

Mid-range Hunter (Slightly Favored):

Mulligan: N'Zoth's First Mate, Southsea Deckhand, Fiery War Axe, Bloodsail RaiderUpgrade!Bloodsail Cultist (Curve/Weapon), Southsea Captain (Curve), Frothing Berserker (Curve), Dread Corsair (Weapon)

Playstyle: This matchup becomes very easy if you have N'Zoth's First Mate in opening hand. They will usually drop a 1hp minion (or 2) on turn 1 which is an easy board to handle with pirate. Throughout the early game (turns 1-5ish) you will want to efficiently trade to clear board. You're doing this because a hunter has so many ways of buffing live beast targets (Houndmaster, Crackling Razormaw) that its hard to stop them if they get ahead. Keep in mind beasts are high priority due to this! Like other matchups, there will come a time where you need to stop trading and go full on face. This is usually when you have developed board and have a weapon equipped or a plan in hand to do enough damage for lethal. Should not be a hard matchup but you can still lose here if they are lucky.

Token Druid (Slightly Unfavored):

Mulligan: N'Zoth's First Mate, Southsea Deckhand, Fiery War Axe, Bloodsail RaiderUpgrade!, Golakka CrawlerBloodsail Cultist (Curve/Weapon), Southsea Captain (Curve), Frothing Berserker (Curve), Dread Corsair (Weapon)

Playstyle: So I say this is 'Slightly Unfavored' but that is only because the majority of players would also say that. To me this is not a bad matchup at all. It just requires solid play making early on. You need to have an understanding of how each deck works. This deck buffs small minions to overwhelm their opponent. To counter that you simply wipe the threats off the board so all he can do is play more small minions. You continually do this while racking up damage until hopefully turn 5 or 6 you can kill them. Two cards to watch out for is Living Mana and Finja the flying star. Both of these cards have potential to end you and your hopes of winning. There is no way to play around Living Mana except an early lethal or rushing as soon as they play it. They will be down to 1 mana the next turn and only have Innervate + Savage Roar as their best possible follow up turn. With Finja the flying star being played I tend to avoid dropping minions unless its to finish the game or buff my weapon. You want to try to end the game without giving him a ridiculous tempo swing. Of course, if you need to play minions do it but just be ready for an army of pissed off murlocs that want to win their master the game. This matchup is more of a 50/50 imo but I could see where the common misconception of it being a poor matchup came from.

Jade Druid (Slightly Unfavored):

Mulligan: N'Zoth's First Mate,  Southsea Deckhand, Fiery War AxeBloodsail Raider, Upgrade!, Southsea Captain (Curve), Bloodsail Cultist (Curve/Weapon), Dread Corsair (Weapon), Frothing Berserker (Curve).

Playstyle: Un'Goro made this deck harder to fight against which is why it is now slightly unfavored. To win this matchup you need to take advantage of the druids poor removal by spamming the board with minions that stick. Be wary of Swipe and Wrath as they will be your downfall in the early game. For late game the druid can stall with taunts and armor (Feral Rage/Earthen Scales. This is why it is important to have the early game advantage and carry it into the victory. Save your Spellbreaker for his taunts(Jade Behemoth/Primordial Drake. This is a semi hard match to win but if you have decent draw/early game you will be fine!

Murloc Paly (Slightly Favored):

Mulligan: N'Zoth's First Mate, Southsea Deckhand, Fiery War Axe, Bloodsail RaiderUpgrade!Bloodsail Cultist (Curve/Weapon), Southsea Captain (Curve), Frothing Berserker (Curve), Dread Corsair (Weapon)

Playstyle: This is a very similar matchup to 'Midrange Hunter' as you will be focusing on killing his minions the first few turns. Murloc paly's can buff their minions out of control if you let them live. As stated before, after you've developed tempo in your favor you will need to start rushing. Play around his turn 4 removals, Consecration and Truesilver Champion. This matchup should be favored for you! If they are the midrange variant it is slightly less favorable, but still favored.

Elemental/Jade Shaman (Favored):

Mulligan: N'Zoth's First Mate, Southsea Deckhand, Fiery War Axe, Bloodsail RaiderUpgrade!Bloodsail Cultist (Curve/Weapon), Southsea Captain (Curve), Frothing Berserker (Curve), Dread Corsair (Weapon)

Playstyle: This Matchup is easy to win after the first two turns. You need to play around their Maelstrom Portal on turn 2 or turn 1(w/ coin). You should focus on building board and dishing out face damage. Trade when necessary (Taunts/spell totems) and as always decide when trading needs to stop and switch to full rush. Should be an easy match just watch out for overextending and their portal!

Zoolock (Slightly Unfavored):

Mulligan: N'Zoth's First Mate, Southsea Deckhand, Fiery War Axe, Bloodsail RaiderUpgrade!Bloodsail Cultist (Curve/Weapon), Southsea Captain (Curve), Frothing Berserker (Curve), Dread Corsair (Weapon)

Playstyle: Zoolock is hard to play against only because they are designed for minion trading. To win this you need to develop control of the board in the first two turns and continue to out trade them while equipping weapons or dropping minions. You need to out zoo the zoo... Like other aggro matchups there will be a point where you need to stop trading and start rushing. You will be able to identify these times easier the more you play with this deck.Mulligan: N'Zoth's First Mate, Southsea Deckhand, Fiery War Axe, Bloodsail RaiderUpgrade!Bloodsail Cultist (Curve/Weapon), Southsea Captain (Curve), Frothing Berserker (Curve), Dread Corsair (Weapon)

Dragon Priest (Favored):

Mulligan: N'Zoth's First Mate, Southsea Deckhand, Fiery War Axe, Bloodsail RaiderUpgrade!Bloodsail Cultist (Curve/Weapon), Southsea Captain (Curve), Frothing Berserker (Curve), Dread Corsair (Weapon)

Playstyle: You can play any minion freely on the empty board (especially early). You want to overwhelm this class with minions and value. Try to get a Fiery War Axe or another card to deal with his Northshire Cleric. After that you should only trade with the priest's taunts or any lethal promising threats. Should be a favored matchup but we all know how priests are on curve so play carefully.

General Strategies/Tips:

Mulligan Juking your opponent:

Due to Quests, we can now juke our opponents into believing we are a certain archetype. To properly do this you need to not touch your left card at all in the mulligan process. Mulligan the cards you need to after the 1st (far left) card. Wait for your opponent to highlight there cards and stop (Complete Mulligan). You will then go through and correct/finish your mulligan when they lock their cards in.

How to have an idea if your opponent is quest or not:

Same thing as juking, if you see your opponent highlight their far left card chances are they are a quest deck. Use judgement though and always be aware that they could just be juking you to think they are playing quest. It's usually a pretty good indicator but it's not guaranteeing you they are quest. Only use this trick if its a class that has a decent quest list in meta (Rogue/Warrior). As pirate's we don't have to worry too much about quest vs. non quest mulligan phase because it will not change what we keep/throw usually.

Spellbreaker used on frozen targets:

The freeze mage matchup can be won based on this single mechanic. Spellbreaker can be used to remove a Frozen effect from a minion. You can use this to unfreeze a high attack mob like Kor'kron Elite or Bloodsail Cultist. Keep in mind that you will cripple your Frothing Berserker to a 2 attack minion if you silence it.

Weapon Management:

As pirate you will have to learn weapon management. For example, a 1/3 weapon is very expendable because you are only gaining 1 dmg per turn. So, always analyze your hand and ask yourself a few questions:

-Do I have a weapon to re-equip/play next turn?

-Is it worth trading/swinging my weapon here?

-Can I upgrade this next turn, and is it worth saving a swing?

These are the question's to ask yourself to become better at weapon management. Keep in mind that you are a rush deck and need to have it engraved in your head that "EVERY DAMAGE COUNTS!".

High Rank Que Tips:

When you reach rank 500+ Legends you will start to notice people counter que-ing you. There are two ways to handle this... Become the counter queuer or wait to que. If you want to go for the counter que as Pirate warrior, you should pick up taunt warrior. It would cover most bad matchups (kinda) and it can really catch your opponent off-guard if they are expecting pirate. On the other hand, I used the take a break method this season. Whenever I won or lost a game I would step away for a few minutes to recollect my thoughts, then re-que into a different person. All in all, be careful at higher ranks. People are savage when digital numbers are on the line!
