Since the nerf reveal, I've been trying to cook up a Medivh, the Guardian Midrange Hunter. The idea with this list is it essentially gives you two ways to win: Simply through curving out well like a typical Midrange Hunter, and this has happened pretty often for me at the low ranks I've tried this... just winning by turn 7-9 through overwhelming on-curve draw. The other win condition is the deck's namesake, of course: Medivh, the Guardian > Atiesh > Call of the Wild.
I initially tried this list including N'Zoth, the Corruptor & Sylvanas Windrunner, hoping for a bit of control/late-game survivability, but I think it's just too greedy and I was getting smashed by the time I could get value out of those cards, so it seemed better to try and add some stall to the deck in the form of Houndmaster and Freezing Trap to help you survive until turn 9 to drop your Call of the Wild on top of Atiesh. I've also tried Tracking in this spot as well, but I think I prefer the trap.
Other notable includes are Explosive Shot, meant to be a third proc for Atiesh, or it can be used earlier for control when necessary, and Ram Wrangler, which was intended as essentially another stall card to give your opponent one more target to help you survive to turn 9, although RNG can be pretty rough here so I'm losing a bit of faith in this card... This could also potentially be a good spot for Tundra Rhino, another spell, or a tech card to be named later.
Thanks for checking it out, and I'd definitely appreciate any feedback!
UPDATE: I'll list the current subs I have made (I'm simply preferring to play slower right now, so you'll see some added late game threats ), and some of the good suggestions from other folks playing with the deck (these subs will push for stronger tempo, which in all honestly, is probably the best choice for this type of deck).
Previous changes made (I'm not still using all of these subs... the current decklist is accurate as to what I am using now) :
-1 Freezing Trap, -1 Eaglehorn Bow, -1 Savannah Highmane, -1 Call of the Wild
+1 Doomsayer, +1 Houndmaster, +1 Sylvanas Windrunner, +1 Chillmaw, +1 N'Zoth, the Corruptor
Other strong substitutions:
-1 Ram Wrangler, +1 Tundra Rhino
-1 Sylvanas Windrunner OR -1 Chillmaw, +1 Savannah Highmane
-1 The Curator, +1 Ragnaros the Firelord
Really tough to replace... not-so-good alts would be Arcane Shot, On the Hunt, Powershot, or you could try to get tricksie and throw in some secrets like Explosive Trap instead (and maybe support it by adding a Cloaked Huntress or two.
^ This exactly! I've been playing a few different Medivh decks lately and the toughest thing about him is just picking the right turn to play him... Often by turn 8 your opponent is dropping huge threats every turn, making it hard to give up a turn of removal to play a big fat minion. But as you mention, it's often going to be a game winning call to simply drop Medivh on a slightly awkward turn, so you get Atiesh value out of those removals for (what should be) the next three turns to secure your win.
I think you are right. I initially built the deck to be a bit slower, but after using it quite a bit, it wins much more consistently with just strong tempo, which would make Tundra Rhino a good choice for sure.
Good deck and fun, but most of the time I find myself waiting for the Call of the Wild Atiesh combo, and most of the time its too late
Best combo: Call of the Wild with Atiesh equiped into Aviana and then play Tundra Rhino
Sooo nice deck, big thx <3
Awesome to see! Thanks for sharing your stats.
Play Medivh > CotW turn hell yeah > Got Majordomo > Trade and turned into firelord, nice 4/20 shit > 8dmg fireball to face > Winstreak into rank 5 > In love with a deck.
Thank you for my new fav hunter deck
The true Wombo Combo. Thanks a bunch for the comment!
Medivh + CotW is now a dangerous roulette thanks to Executus.
Lol, this is very true, but have faith... Even the Major can win you some games.
I tried the deck and after 10 matches, I am 3-7, around rank 14. I have 0-3 against druid, 1-3 against warlock, 1-1 against shaman but all games lost around turn 8-9 and in any game I managed to make the medivh combo. Maybe I am not good but the feeling in every game was that the deck was slow. Any advise?
I have some bad news for you about Zoolock (almost unwinable unless you get very lucky), but Druid has been a decent matchup for me. I'm curious were these Maly or Beast Druids? I have have good success against Maly (just curving out well, and often finishing with the Medivh Combo right at turn 9), but I was getting rushed down by some Beast Druids last night.
Unfortunately this deck struggles pretty significantly against aggro. As you mentioned it is kind of a slow deck, which was actually sort of the intention so that you can have the chance to pull the Medivh combo. My hope was that the nerfs would push the meta a bit more control-oriented, which this deck competes quite well against, but I also haven't seen any reduction in aggro so far.
Make sure you are trading everything on the board until you can get down a Call of the Wild, so if you're not already, feel free to use up all of your removal to keep your health up early. Conversely, don't be too hesitant about spending a Kill Command with your Atiesh, this little combo has won me a couple of games.
The other options are teching in some aggro cards to speed up the deck (consider +2 Huge Toad, -1Explosive Shot, -1Ram Wrangler), or I've been considering but haven't had a chance to test yet is adding back in N'Zoth with some taunt minions (Infested Tauren, or even a Chillmaw).
Hope this helps, and let me know how it goes!
Thanks for reply. The answer to your question is beast druids. I continued to play your deck with good results but I noticed the bad matchup against miracle rogue( 0 - 4 now ), very often his tempo plays are too strong to win.
Yeah, I haven't had quite as bad luck against Rogues, but it can be a tough matchup for sure... Saving that Deadly Shot and a well-timed taunt or trap play seem to be some of the only ways to survive that one.
Awesome to hear you are having success with the deck, and yeah, Rag is a great choice there. Thanks for the comment!
Can I replace the 1xCall of the Wild with something else?
Ragnaros is always a good choice.
