Finally got to playing some Zoo this season and it is definitely still strong. I updated the list to what I'm playing right now. The deck has definitely gotten a lot quicker and more aggressive but board control is still the key.
Few general things:
-When you're not on the coin you need to mulligan hard for a 1 drop always. Sometimes you can make an exception against slower decks but you need to have board presence asap.
-When you are on the coin you can be greedier with your mulligan. Depending on the matchup you want to keep things like Knife Juggler or Dire Wolf Alpha. Imp Gang Boss is almost always good to keep with the coin and if you know your enemy is control heavy like Freeze Mage or something that will run Doomsayer, Crazed Alchemist can be very good to keep. With the nerf of Ironbeak Owl, Crazed Alchemist fills a similar role and actually finds value against Bloodhoof Brave and other low attack, high health taunts.
- While you may be able to SMOrc people down, board control is always more important than getting in face damage. With Leeroy Jenkins, 2xPower Overwhleming, and 2xSoulfire in your deck you will almost never run out of damage unless you lose your board. There's some exception to this obviously if you have lethal, but other than that board presence is top priority. I have won zoo mirror matchups with only 1hp because my opponent decided to SMOrc instead of trade and allowed me to regain the board:
-The meta is constantly changing and it is important to remember that means your deck should be changing with it. Some tech cards might be good today but not worth running tomorrow.
If you have any questions I do my best to respond in the comments. Zoo is much different than it was before standard but it is still very viable and a lot of fun. Good luck grinding! (:
Typical Hand:
Have you tried gormak in this deck at all this format?
I actually haven't been playing zoo this season, but I have played a few games and I did actually swap in gormak and he was performing well.
Thank you. Reached rank 8 last season with a deck like yours, except I had the reliqiary seeker in place of one giant (which, well, is basically a discount sea giant if you don't have the dust), this deck is crushing some other archetypes and kinda fun to play:)
Went on a 10-1 winning steak last night with this deck. on EU server from rank 20 down to 13.. will see if a can hit legend with i this month. gonna give it a real go :)
Awesome man! Glad to hear its working for you, let me know if you get there!
2 doomguards ans 2 giants ? Is working for you? I mean, u never have giant while doomguard in your hand and then u have to discard giant? :/ i will appreciate an answer ! Btw awesome deck :)
Sometimes it can be too heavy but it usually works out fine. If you have to discard a giant in order to play doomguard it's usually not that big of a deal either. I have considered cutting a doomguard but it's just so strong in the mirror to have two of them, and honestly I feel the same way about sea giant too.
While imp master has the similar effect of summoning 1/1s it is considerably weaker because it is much easier to trade. If you don't have the imp gang boss I would probably run harvest golem instead.
7 games, 7 defeats. I don't know who said the new Zoo was overpowered.
Zoo IS really strong right now, it needs practice though. Lots of people play zoo as a face deck and then ofc dont do good with it. There is also the chance that you ran into lots of freeze mages or some other counters.
Of course I didn't go face all the time...
The deck was just always short on damage, short on card even if I tapped every turn and short on minions because 1/1s and 2/2s don't really stick on the board anymore. I ran into taunts and board clears or face decks that I could never keep up with. It might be strong in some match-ups but people are overhyping this deck imo.
I've tried the other top Zoo lists on hearthpwn and played a few more games, 45% WR. Afterwards I asked a few friends who tried them too and except one, they all said to me that they had bad stats with the new Zoo too.
Clearly I'm bitter now but when I'm calm again I'll probably give it another try to see if it's really all that bad.
It's not the deck, as it's working for me and many others, but i am long time zoo player while u aren't. Just because it's a zoo deck does not mean it is easy to play, it requires thinking and planning ahead, u can't just always dump ur hand and hope for the best. Practice makes perfect. There is a reason while zoo is top tier right now....it wins. Keep at it champ.
I've played Zoo for a year before standard comes out, I don't know what makes you say I'm not a Zoo player.
Not sure what your problem is but it isn't the deck. I tanked to about rank 3000 legend just screwing around with random decks and experimenting and I have climbed from 3000 all the way back to about 200 range in a matter of one day. Zoo is absolutely strong right now. It's not as easy to play as it used to be but it is very strong against most matchups.
Edit: Have you considered maybe it's your mulligan? Because if you're not using your mulligan correctly it can easily affect the game enough to where you lose games you could have otherwise won... just trying to help.
20 Game Test Cycle: 14-6, ending at Rank 2. I could never cut Bran tho, he has won me a half dozen games.
I always say whatever works for you is what's best. I still see a lot of zoo running him but he doesn't fit my play style in the current meta because he doesn't offer enough tempo when played on turn 3 and is not very difficult for most decks to remove.
I find druid to be a very favorable match up, just kill him before he gets his taunts out. The only way I lose is if he has tempo innervates/ramp. And yeah not much you can do against shaman when they have the nuts.
Sounds like a good sub.
I wonder if i should change ironbeak owl with spellbreaker after the nerfs
1 more mana for +2/+2. I'd say yes, but I could be wrong.
