Finally got to playing some Zoo this season and it is definitely still strong. I updated the list to what I'm playing right now. The deck has definitely gotten a lot quicker and more aggressive but board control is still the key.
Few general things:
-When you're not on the coin you need to mulligan hard for a 1 drop always. Sometimes you can make an exception against slower decks but you need to have board presence asap.
-When you are on the coin you can be greedier with your mulligan. Depending on the matchup you want to keep things like Knife Juggler or Dire Wolf Alpha. Imp Gang Boss is almost always good to keep with the coin and if you know your enemy is control heavy like Freeze Mage or something that will run Doomsayer, Crazed Alchemist can be very good to keep. With the nerf of Ironbeak Owl, Crazed Alchemist fills a similar role and actually finds value against Bloodhoof Brave and other low attack, high health taunts.
- While you may be able to SMOrc people down, board control is always more important than getting in face damage. With Leeroy Jenkins, 2xPower Overwhleming, and 2xSoulfire in your deck you will almost never run out of damage unless you lose your board. There's some exception to this obviously if you have lethal, but other than that board presence is top priority. I have won zoo mirror matchups with only 1hp because my opponent decided to SMOrc instead of trade and allowed me to regain the board:
-The meta is constantly changing and it is important to remember that means your deck should be changing with it. Some tech cards might be good today but not worth running tomorrow.
If you have any questions I do my best to respond in the comments. Zoo is much different than it was before standard but it is still very viable and a lot of fun. Good luck grinding! (:
Typical Hand:
In which situation do you use soulfire? Is it more a finisher? Also is Doomguard a good replacement for Leeroy? It is the only card I do not have.
It's nice to use as a finisher but it is also good for clearing larger minions without having to sacrifice board. I would say at least half the time I use soulfire it is for early clear.
Sorry forgot to respond about Leeroy.. If you don't have him I would drop the soulfires and run two doomguards and then fill the open card spot in with whatever you want, second imp/giant/bilefin/etc
Crazed Alchemist for doomsayer? Can't you run silence? Or is the 2/2 body better than the spellbreaker?
Well most decks play doomsayer on turn 1, 2 or 3 and you will not have the opportunity to use spellbreaker on it anyways. Spellbreaker is also pretty inefficient to play for 4 mana.
Ah. That makes sense
Mad Scientist? You mean Crazed Alchemist?
whoooops.... lol, thanks for catching that.
Would you recommend a second Sea Giant, Argent Commander, or Doomguard as replacement for Leeroy?
Leeroy is pretty hard to replace in this lineup. If you don't have him I would probably cut the soulfires and put two doomguards and either a second sea giant or flame imp.
I did do somewhat of a write up. I haven't played enough zoo this season but once I play more I will try and update as much as I can and I always try to answer questions :)
You can replace with 2 x Bilefin Tidehunter for better synergies with Knife Juggler and Darkshire Councilman.
11-1 =)
2 x Bilefin Tidehunter for 1 x Dire Wolf Alpha and 1 x Flame Imp (Awesome synergies with Knife Juggler and Darkshire Councilman)
1 x Leeroy Jenkins for 1 x Doomguard (Great finish and No discard of cards)
1 x Gormak the Impaler for 1 x Sea Giant (Combos really well with Forbidden Ritual)
I haven't really played zoo this season but in the few games I have I made some ofnthese changes. I will try be update this list once I get legend and start to mess around with different decks.
No problem!
I dont much like to play double sea giant, with whom i should replace it?
And who would I replace for 2 Imp gang boss?
Bilefin Tidehunter for board precense, and argent squire and abusive sergant
Bilefin Tidehunter for board precense, and argent squire and abusive sergant
Bilefin tide hunter for board presense, abusive sargent for trade value and more argentsquire so you can trade without losing a minion.
