Introductory words
If you find success with a deck, why not share that success with others? This is the reason for this deck post. I do not want my efforts to go wasted.
Through the past 3 days of fiddling (the viable card combinations) with iterations of the control mage - this came up to be the most successful (for me). Test it out, I want to hear your reactions!
I have been playing this deck nonstop for at least 2 days in a row, and I've had great results; now I want to see the potential at the hands of someone else.
Given enough time, this deck will break through the rank 10 floors of Cubelocks, Control warlocks, Dragon-priests, Jade druids, Aggro-druids, and Highlander priests; and performs as an anti-meta alternative. (pre-nerf)
Important Card Choices
Coldlight Oracle is essential against card hoarding decks such as Priest and Warlock and can be a win condition, unlike Acolyte of Pain, which is the most direct comparison. Coldlight also works dynamically better than Acolyte in the sense that Coldlight Oracle draws immediately. In clutch situations, Coldlight can save you by drawing Arcane Artificer.
This card can fetch all your luxuries such as Rin, Polymorph, Dragon's Fury, Arcane Artificer, Ice Block, Jaina, Alanna, Mind Control, Gnome Feratu, Bloodreaver Gul'dan, Kazakus, Sacrificial Pact, Shadow word: Death, and more. Extremely good card for the Archetype.
The combination of above secrets has in my testing been more efficient than 2x Ice Block because you have a greater chance to bounce back after the block pop - instead of staying like a sitting duck. Additionally, the ice barrier helps to cover the block.
I could add more cards to this list, however, not all of these are self-contained, which is the reason for the designated cards and the segment.
Inspirational sources
The inspiration has been derived from HotMeowth's and TicTac_HS's existing versions of the deck in addition to the Kazakus builds!
Mulligan strategy
- It is okay to keep 1x Coldlight Oracle in the hand vs Priest; vs Warlock you have to keep Coldlight; in other matchups, you do not need the extra draw.
- Only keep a maximum of 1x Doomsayer in the hand.
- Always search for Arcanologist, Tar Creeper, and Dragon's Fury.
- Against Aggro search for Doomsayer, Dirty Rat.
- Keep Skulking Geist against Druids and Warlocks.
- Keep Polymorph against Warlocks.
- PLEASE, do not use Doomsayers against Control- and Cubelocks.
- Keep Blizzard against Paladins.
Final words
I know that people hide their thumbs-ups, but if you like the deck, do not forget to show your appreciation.
Changes
- Now is better against Tempo decks due to Meatwagon + Dragon's Fury combo searching Doomsayer.
- Added Weapon removal instead of 1x Flamestrike to help against unfavorable matchups such as the occasional mirror match and pesky Warlocks!
- Added 2x Kabal Courier.
- The deck was too greedy against Paladins and Mages. Made some defensive changes.
Statistics
(Ranked pre-nerf stats, starting at Rank 5, 0 stars. 2/6/2018)
Good legendaries in the classic set is the best choise in order to build a decent and healthy collection in the long term. Among those cards you just stated, I personally would pick Alexstrasza. It's well spent dust and never EVER think about dusting it to craft any card for a top-tier deck in any meta. It's a card that will always be valuable in your collection.
However, I think there are better legendaries to craft first if you don't own them such as: Bloodmage Thalnos , Leeroy Jenkins based on their popularity.
If you are looking for faster improvement for next season play, pick 2x Ice Block and 2x Doomsayer. Classic-set cards first and you are getting a couple of cards that are always a must in any control mage deck.
Is Sindragossa/Nzoth good choise now?what do you think about it?
and really miss more matchup stat in guide (: im want try this deck but afraid spend a lot of dust for it.Is this list still good for climbing?
btw +1
I dont have Medivh, how can I replace him?
I was missing cards like meat wagon, dirty rats, skulking geist and one meteor.
Crafted meteor first, and added two spellbreaker, one flamestrike and one raven. Didn't want to craft the dirty rats since it will rotate in a couple months and meat wagon I wasn't sure so I decided to keep my precious dust. The deck worked great until I ran onto jade druid.
So I went on to craft Skulging Geist to replace the raven, and tadaa the deck is doing wonders :)
Thanks
I can either craft 2x Meteor or Dragoncaller Alanna wich one should i choose?
Definitely Alanna
Meteor all the way. Dragoncaller Alanna is just for the memes right now.
An even better choise would be Frost Lich Jaina in case you haven't crafted it yet.
I can either craft Alanna or Meteorx2, Dragon's Furyx2 and Skulking Geist.
Which is the better crat for this deck?
in my time playing this, it still performs well without Dragoncaller Alanna.
Dragon's Fury is jut insaaaane against aggro and zoo decks.
Good control mage btw
what is the best scenario for the meat wagon play? u think it is worth it? :)
I'm missing quite a few Epics and Dragoncaller Alanna
What could be replacements for Dirty Rat and Skulking Geist.
How about Babbling Book or maybe Stonehill Defender?
Also, do you think Firelands Portal can make up for a missing Dragon's Fury and/or Meteor
Just a big Threat can replace Alanna. you might be able to get away with a Counterspell for the Geist but that tampers with the secrets consistency. You do need every board clear you can get though, try to fit those in.
I'm just missing 2x Meteor. Sometimes I wish I had it but the deck worked quite well for now with Firelands Portal esp with Atiesh on board .
I added Zola the Gorgon and it won me some games, giving me another copy of Doomsayer, Alexstrasza, and even Medivh, the Guardian
Been stomping Aggro/Zoo decks so far and performs quite well against Cubelock. Though I had some problems with Spiteful Priest (really needs Meteor in this matchup imo), Tyrantus at turn 6 is just nasty.
I'm also thinking of adding Arcane Tyrant just for tempo swings but I've yet to craft them. Or even Arcane Giant just for the late game swings.
What are thoughts about swapping out Acidic Swamp Ooze for Harrison Jones ?
i guess not because warlock's weapon is the only one wich can make problems and it has 0 dmg so you won't gain any armor
Fun deck but gets absolutely blown out against agro mage. I'm something like 0-7 against them. There's a ton on ladder also because of the other agro nerfs.
Still an awesome deck and a lot of fun but if you are seeing a lot of mages don't expect to climb with this deck
I added in Eater of Secrets and it drastically has changed my success against agro mage with this deck. It also helps against hunters quite a bit. Replaced Meat Wagon as that card just makes no sense to me.
