I’d still wait with crafting until the new expansion is settled.

Yes, either you replace Glyph with stuff like Kabal Lackey or you go for card draw with an Acolyte or Thalnos (if you have it). However, Arcanologist is pretty solid and important for this deck imo. It’s basically your strategy to play her, pull a secret from your deck, follow up with Kirin or Valet both for tempo/swing/bit boardclear. You might have an early mana wyrm on board to combine all that + a situational frostbolt or something. This gives you a board advantage most of the time. Then Crystal Runner, Portal, maybe a Bonmare on top = gg :D

Glyph is great especially for burst in this deck (also late game) because you can run out of fuel with secret mage. Congrats to Keleseth. I got Taldaram from the first 10 packs thing. Well.. :D

The last few days I've been playing with mage in low ranked wild to get my wins from gold, and I have to say it's been quite fun. I've included Mad Scientist since it's wild, and I tend to surrender games that start badly since I purposefully stay low rank. That might explain I don't get bored of it... Here is the deck, though it's probably not fit for actually ranking:
    ### Secret Mage
    # Class: Mage
    # Format: Wild
    #
    # 2x (1) Babbling Book
    # 1x (1) Kabal Lackey
    # 2x (1) Mana Wyrm
    # 2x (2) Frostbolt
    # 2x (2) Mad Scientist
    # 2x (2) Medivh's Valet
    # 2x (2) Sorcerer's Apprentice
    # 2x (3) Arcane Intellect
    # 2x (3) Counterspell
    # 2x (3) Kirin Tor Mage
    # 2x (3) Mirror Entity
    # 2x (4) Ethereal Arcanist
    # 2x (4) Fireball
    # 2x (5) Avian Watcher
    # 2x (7) Firelands Portal
    # 1x (10) Pyroblast

You actually get a Golden Epic too, plus a golden rare i think, it may help you if you are low on dust. When you have enough dust you should definitely check out Secret Mage (btw Primordial Glyph not needed). As you are a returning player and f2p, try not to disenchant most of your collection for a deck that may last a month or so.
I did check that since I am indeed really interested in the golden epic, but the rewards are so (excluding some dust):
    • Rank 10: 2x golden common, 1x golden rare
    • Rank 5: 2x golden common, 1x golden epic
    • Legend: 3x golden common, 1x golden epic

Thus my comment debating if the grind to legend was worth for another golden.

As for my collection, I only dusted duplicates (and I dust the goldens when I have the commons). The collector in me won't let me dust the rest.

Thanks for all the replies, and sorry for the late answer, I was trying out some of the suggestions!

Concerning the Hunter deck, I did make the change suggested (bare the bearshark I'm still waiting to get from a pack) and I did reach rank 5. I don't think I'll try for legend this month as the grind is real and doesn't feel worth it for a cardback and a golden common since most of the matchups I get are negative netdecks (tempo rogue, aggro druid, zoolock...).

Regarding mage, I do like the class as it's my second most played with ~300 ranked wins from my previous life. However it felt a bit weird to play it when I got back as the meta changed quite a bit. I did try some secret mage (without Primordial Glyph and Arcanologist, using "secret" minions instead), but it felt very clumsy. I didn't feel in control as I do with Hunter knowing my deck inside and out. Lack of practice and sub-par deck sure made it awkward...

I agree that Primordial Glyph feels strong (turn 5 Flamestrike...), but probably not the strongest. Problem is always the same: even though I have some dust, I need more cards than I can craft and the neutrals that could be used in many decks feel attractive (Doomsayer, Murloc Warleader, Southsea Captain, Hungry Crab...). Or if I craft expansion class epics, maybe the most broken ones like Vilespawn Slayer ?

Sweet irony, I finally played enough arena to get to my free legendary from Frozen Throne, and I got that bastard Prince Keleseth. Feels great as a F2P. Maybe I should try to craft a tempo rogue or zoolock and give them a taste of their own medicine :)

Secret mage was indeed on my list of possible option, however there is one card that is worries me: Primordial Glyph. I see it included in every deck but it is seems expensive to craft for what it brings. What could replace it? I am also missing Bonemare, but it is just a question of time as I am buying FT packs.

You might probably just want to wait for the next expansion considering there'll be a whole new meta when the new cards arrive, so I don't think building a semi-competitive deck 1 month before a new expansion is ideal. As for the packs, just keep buying Un'goro and KoFT packs until you get most commons and rares. This is because the standard rotation is just around the corner (April next year) so investing in mean streets and old gods will net you the least amount of value in the long run, unless you want to commit to playing wild in the future.

Midrange hunter is a good budget option so i suggest you stick with that for now, you probably just need to play a lot more games and eventually you'll reach rank 5 cause I think midrange hunter is semi-decent right now. I suggest you hold off on the dust for now and just see what cards you may want in the next expansion.

I've indeed decided to bypass the Old Gods & MSG since I won't get much use for those cards by the time I do get them. Hence why I asked what decks could be played using mostly Un'Goro and Frozen Throne cards. As for the cards, I should probably wait the expansion, or at least it's announcement before crafting legendaries or epics, but some rares seem to have so much value I'd not regret crafting them now. I'll get back to that and the Hunter deck at the end of the post!

    1. Wait for the next exp

    2. In the meantime if you like playing arena just farm it non stop. If you are like me and hate playing arena just try playing fun decks in casual

    3. And finally. Just buy packs. Hearthstone is at a point where you can never catch up. I have been f2p for 2 years and i have already pre ordered the next exp because i haven't played in a month. Just a month of missing gold and i am way behind in the grind. Save up some money if you can. If you dont see yourself playing hearthstone for the rest of 2017 and 2018 just quit man. It's not worth it anymore

I think arena is good practice, have done two 4-wins so far, and I have the gold for 5 more runs just from dailies... quick way to get the FT packs cheaper :)
    Quote from ArgentumEmperio >>

Depends what you want to do and I'm not talking about reaching rank 5 but rather how you want to reach it.

You can reach it with about anything as most of the good decks out there actually run on a set of common-cards-core. Heck I can even recommend you to a priest list that only runs on commons, rares and 2 Shadow Visions for effiency but... even those can be replaced. See the spoiler for the deck, its one that StanCifka showcased here on Hearthpwn some time ago I do believe, that or it was on Omnistone that I found it - either way, its cheap, its affordable and you can exchange quite a few of the cards for different ones.

The thing about decks in Hearthstone right now is that they operate either on the basis that Bonemare is an insane card and you are required to run 2 copies of it... or you run a more expensive version that have so many big hardhitting cards that you simply don't have the space for the card.

Otherwise decks really run like they have done in the past.

But if you want to have a bit more fun on the ladder I'd say running a midrange hunter deck with that Deathstalker Rexxar you got wouldn't be a terrible idea. The point is... what do you want to run to rank 5? Something everyone else is playing or something cheap, affordable and good things to craft? If that's the case, the only card that really stands out to me is Bonemare or possibly Prince Keleseth.

    Most other things is fluff.

So... save up for Kobolds and Catacombs I'd recommend and just go with something affordable (such as the deck I listed) to rank 5. If you want a more efficent deck... you need 2 legendaries as most decks do run 'em; Patches the Pirate and Prince Keleseth albeit... I wouldn't really bother with that. Because a lot of really good and important cards also come from Karazhan and that's still a good investment but possibly not if you are just returning and have no interest in paying for some cards with money as opposed to gold/dust.

Lot of information here! Concerning what I want to do, I'd say that having a mid-range hunter deck I like (and most probably reach rank 5 with as it is), I'd like to develop other classes/archetypes.
My problem is that although I've played a lot of games recently and I start to have a good feeling of what to expect from new cards (i.e. dragonfire potion turn 6, Bonemare turn 7, DK Anduin turn 8, DK Guldann turn 10, etc...) I am still in the when I need to say from which expansion cards come from, or the rarity they have. This thus makes it difficult to see what decks I could expect to get running more easily than others.
The decks I'm hoping for are
    1) Craftable in an incremental way, i. e. not solely relying on an expensive powerful combo (Priest Raza come to mind as an example of what I'd like to avoid). An example of this would be Zoolock I think. Patches, Keleseth and DK Guldann make it much better, but it seems to me it can handle on its own without the legendaries.
    2) Not relying too heavily on the Old Gods & MSG. As they rotate soon, I'd like to avoid crafting too many of those.
Sadly I'm still missing a lot of cards to try the priest you suggest (1500 dust+), but I'll try it when I come by the common and rare ones (sooner rather than later I hope). I also bought and finished Karazhan since first posting so that is not a problem (I am ok with paying when I know what I get, but I don't like the gambling on packs).
You also mentioned the two cards that give me most difficulties: Prince Keleseth crushing me early game (I hate that 3x Keleseth turn 2 rogue...), and Bonemare preventing me from closing games. I do hope to get the latter naturally, but I might craft Keleseth because it feels so strong... I'll wait to see the new expansion information though, to see if there is a card that will completely negate him.
As for hunter here is what I am using at the moment, I do welcome comments and suggestions!
Two improvements I'll probably make quickly is to craft 2xGolakka Crawler given the proliferation of pirates, and an Eaglehorn Bow to help me deal with the board without sacrificing my minions (this card seem to have stayed a staple since the early days, a solid craft it seems).
My main problem at the moment is that I think I run a bit too much of low mana cards that can have a lot of value but are quite weak on their own (Timber Wolf, Jeweled Macaw, Kindly Grandmother). If I don't also draw stronger cards I feel like my opponent can deal with them too easily and I never recover my board deficit.
I'll also replace the Vicious Fledgling by a Bearshark when I do get it. The first card can win a game by itself, but I feel like people deal with it a lot more easily than Bearshark.
As for the late game I might try something with Nesting Roc or Bonemare if I come by them opening packs. Might remove a Tundra Rhino, I feel this card is strong if you are ahead, but if you are fighting from behind it gets deleted too easily. I've seen a lot of Bittertide Hydra, but I don't know if the improvement would really justify its cost.
I've also seen people dropping Unleash the Hounds, so I might try that... it can be very useful, but there are also moments where it's a dead card in your hand, especially running two.
Edit: I did it again, sorry :x

Hello there! I was afraid my wall of text would make people flee :(

I've just reached rank 8 and I gathered a lot of information in the last few days. I've mainly decided that I'd be mainly doing arena to complete my collection (thus getting more Frozen Throne cards than anything else for now). However I still have a pretty big question.

Considering mostly the classic and Frozen Throne cards, which deck should I aim to build?

Atm I am playing midrange hunter, but I do have major difficulties against aggro and tempo deck (Tempo Rogue, Zoo Warlock, Aggro Shaman...), maybe there is something I could work on to get another deck going?

If possible something that mainly uses Frozen Throne & classic cards. I can craft a few other cards, but I'd prefer to focus my dust on important epic & legendaries from the classic set if possible.

As a reminder you can see the main legendaries I have in the previous post or look at my collection.

    Thanks!

posted a message on Returning player - how to handle things

THello everyone! I played hearthstone a lot in the past - around 2014 and early 2015 if I remember correctly - and I'd like to get back to it but all the new stuff feels a bit overwhelming, so I'm here for your guidance!

To put context, my goals at the moment would be:

    1. Increase my collection to be able to play multiple decks semi-competively.
    2. Play ranked to reach rank 5 (and earn the cards to complete the collection, again).

I do have some cards from my previous experience: I unlocked Naxxramas and BrM, as well as two wings of LoE. I however have very few cards from Grand Tournament (4 goldens) and GvG (~25).

My classic set is quite well furnished, having a lot of commons and rares (notably missing Keeper of the Grovex2, Eaglehorn Bowx1, Lightwellx2, Auchenai Soulpriestx2, Siphon Soulx2, Doomguardx1). However it is missing almost all important epics: Doomsayerx2, Preparationx2, Ice Blockx2, Twisting Netherx2, Brawlx2, Murloc Warleaderx2, Southsea Captainx1...

I wasn't too unfortunate with the legendaries, getting Cenarius, Archmage Antonidas, Tirion Fordring and Ysera. My most played classes were Mage, Hunter and Warlock. I also amassed 3000 dust from all the duplicates I had. I can craft some cards, but I wanna be smart about it.

Since coming back I opened the "new" expansion packs to get the guaranteed legendaries: Yogg-Saron, Hope's End (after 2 Old Gods), Inkmaster Solia (after 7 from MSG), Spiritsinger Umbra (after 2 from Un'Goro). I also got Deathstalker Rexxar from the Frozen Throne adventure.

So my two questions are the following:

    1. How should I spend my gold to increase my collection efficiently?

Given I am willing to buy the adventures and will buy Karazhan shortly, but I don't want to buy packs...

I am missing important epics & legendaries from classic, but given the low drop rate, buying classic packs feels like a waste and I think I'd be more inspired to get the new expansions to get the useful commons & rares from those, and craft the epics & legendaries from classic.

I have already unlocked the guaranteed legendary from Old Gods, MSG & Un'Goro, so I think I should do the same with Frozen Throne (I only got 2-3 packs from the adventure), and the best way for this would be arena.

After this, I feel like playing arena until I start getting a lot of duplicates from Frozen Throne would still be the best option, but I don't know what kind of decks really make use of Frozen Throne... ironically it seems that what I'd play benefits mostly from Un'Goro and MSG, and crafting the missing commons for 40 dusts feels really bad. What do you think?

    2. What to play in ranked to get results based on the cards I have and can craft?

This season I've mostly played hunter midrange to make use of my Deathstalker Rexxar, but after reaching rank 13 I feel very underpowered given most opponents I face rocks half a dozen very powerful legendaries. Rexxar won me a few games, but it feels like if I don't get a crazy start my chances of winning are quite slim. Is it because it's still the beginning of the season and rank 13 will get a lot easier in say, 2 weeks?

Alternatively, what decks could I play given the cards I have? Midrange hunter, Murloc paladin, Zoo Warlock or some kind of Mage (given my Antonidas), especially once i'll have Kazarhan unlocked. I don't feel like I'd have better results in wild though... I do have Naxx & BrM, but i'm also missing the most powerful cards from that time (Dr. Boom still haunts my dreams).

As for crafting, I am still missing most of the useful commons & rares from the new expansions (Fire Fly, Alleycat...), but crafting those at 40 dusts when I know I'll eventually get truckloads of those once I get to buy the corresponding packs feels really bad... Wouldn't it be better to get those epics I miss, mostly the neutral ones (Doomsayer & Murloc Warleader maybe?).

Thanks in advance for you input!
