So i just received an in-game prompt to an online survey from Blizzard regarding my current perception of the game, its marketing, etc. A lot of the survey contained typical focus group-type prompts but what interested me was a few sections asking to choose from various external IPs ranging from Pokemon, Sailor Moon, the Matrix, Bladerunner and determining which would be a good fit for a crossover promotion with HS.
It also presented me with a list of art styles (such as Realistic Horror, Anime/Manga, Chibi, etc) and specifcally asked “How interested would you be in seeing each of the following art styles in Hearthstone cosmetics / alternate card art?“
The idea i’m getting from this is that Team 5 is heavily considering alternate themed art for cards as a cosmetic, including crossovers with other brands a la Secret Lair from MTG. I personally think it would be a very interesting and profitable idea, as long as the line isn’t crossed where you’re made to pay out-of-pocket for a limited edition unique Legendary Pikachu minion or some other nonsense such as that. Any thoughts on this direction for HS?
Also, is there any way to fix a typo in the title of a thread ? Lol
Nope, but I gotchu.
As to the survey, I got it too, but it went different ways depending on your answers. For instance I put in somewhere that I liked Sports, so it asked me which sport would make for a cool crossover with Hearthstone (my answer and the obvious answer was NONE).
So depending on how you answered earlier questions you could get wildly different followups.
Some were the same though obv, like the ones about alternate art styles. Trouble is I like HS because of it;s unique artstyle. World of Warcraft the same thing. If I wanted more realistic or chibi or celebrity inspired card games, I;d just go play those.
I did like they allowed me to rank stuff by importance and I got to list "Giveaways" as the top option, cause fuck yeah, free shit! :D

I've always thought card skins were a good idea. They'll probably be overpriced as hell, but I still think they're a good idea. Especially for core staple cards.
This is something that is helping to kill Magic, and it's parent company, Hasbro: non-stop releases of bizarre crossovers that are absolutely killing the theme of the game.
Although, Hearthstone has never kept itself as serious as Magic, it has stuck very closely to Warcraft as a theme.
Marvel Snap has something similar. The Chibi and Cal Arts style card variants are easily the ugliest, most cringe vanity pieces I've seen in a game. And I've played call of duty & halo.
World of Tanks has camouflages for tanks that are non-historical, those include stuff like collabs with Warhammer or the band Sabaton. Every player can in their settings turn off a-historic camouflages so only the historical ones are visible to them. Most players leave them on, but it's a nice option to have. Though I have this weird feeling that if we get these collaborative skins for cards and heroes, then Team 5 won't give us that option...
Losing to Sire Denathrius makes me not want to play this game anymore. The Sire Denathrius nerf makes me want to play this game again. Losing to Deathrattle Rogue makes me not want to play this game anymore. The Prince Renathal nerf makes me not want to play this game anymore.
I don't see what's new so far, other than they are actually asking for ideas and feedback. Bgs has Sailor moon as theme right now and countless expansions had flavor from books/movies/games. Skins have been made with collective themes for a while too.
Disclaimer first: We all know this is a profit driving tool for a company that works to make money. No one is blind to that. We're all aware that our likes and dislikes are merely one facet of a much bigger picture.
My interaction with this product is as a player and a fan and I think it's valid to have an opinion that prioritises things differently to the developers, designers, publishers, marketers, you, whatever.
When I first started playing Hearthstone, it felt good. Design decisions felt like they were in line with the players and were focussed on making the game more fun to play. The impression was always that there was genuinely a "small indie company" (or rather development team) at the other end of the line.
This is not the case any more. The message I'm seeing from Blizzard is no longer one of "How can we make the game better for you?" but "What would you be willing to spend money on?"
Did you ever have one of those friend who only get in touch when they need something? That's how this feels.
I no longer check the store when there's an exclamation mark icon (as there is now). I no longer buy a pack here and there. I don't watch live streams any more and I don't watch the HS news sites as avidly as I did in the past.
The good news for Blizzard is that yes, I did preorder and I will doubtless keep playing. However I've been in this kind of "diminishing returns" relationship before (hello NBA LIve, hello Emma <surname withheld>, hello Scrubs) and I know that it ends up with me deciding to just walk away. (Sorry Emma)
It's possible that I'm alone in this, or that my demographic is so small that it doesn't matter to Blizzard (or you) but it matters to me. I don't want to stop liking this game but if it keeps treating me like the meal ticket I am, rather than the valued customer they say I am. I'm out.
I don't really mind as long as it's just cosmetics. I would also be okay with some temporary cards from another IP being added for maybe a month as a part of a crossover event.

Can't wait to play Superman Demon Hunter
alternate art cards would be nice...
To live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffer!

CRUISIN YEEEAH! CRUISIN USA!
In my humble personal opinion : f.u.c.k crossovers.

stinks of desperation, team 5 has destroyed hearthstone

I feel better now.
There's so much warcraft lore to expand in Hearthstone and they think crossovers because:
They feel they've exhausted the pull of their warcraft fans...
