What are reasonable expectations to have when trying to rank up with non-meta decks & few high powered cards? I'm a newer player & I currently mostly play non murloc Paladin & I can get to 18 but that is about it. I see a lot of meta decks at this level & am wondering if I am doing good, bad, or am I running into these decks because of how the ladder works. What are things I should be aiming for?
Now, this deck changed a lot and now you are seeing a KoFt version, but this doesn't really matter that much, because you can always see the history and the nature of the deck is still untouched. So you can get a grip of how the deck looked like. Anyway in the first two months I reached rank 4, starting only with Kalimos and slowly crafting all the other missing leggies, in the last month, when jade spirit become an elemental I even reached rank 2. I believe, that I had the ability to even reach rank 1, but I made some mistakes.
So what's the moral of this post - it all depends how well you build your deck and how well you play/ how well you mulligan your starting hand. I remember, that back in Un;goro i saw a lot of aggro decks, so I ran a lot of removals. Against slower decks I had the jades. Yes, some meta decks have the upper hand (cubelock with the BS cheesy plays), but some MUs are an inevitable loss so you have to accept them anyway. You just have to strenthen your deck against the majority of the decks as much as possible.
[edit] I remember how back in MSOG, aka the pirate warrior expansion, how some people reached legend ranks even with the slowest decks. Right now I'm thinking of Maly shaman. Yes, it takes more games to play such off-meta decks, but with the right cards you can even reach high ranks.
I wouldn't say no substitute. but the skill level to create a deck that's not completely net decked and performs better then net decks is EXTREMELY high. it's more of a I've been playing hearthstone for 1+years kind of thing (maybe more).
I was thinking the same thing from the original post. Even with a limited collection you should be able to stitch together either a Control Priest deck or an Aggro Hunter that can get you that far with persistence. It can be frustrating every time you get trampled by a Jade Druid or Cubelock up there, but you can level slowly even without a 50% win rate.
With a little luck and good timing (play on weekends when the overall skill level is reduced) you should be able to get to rank 15 with a non-optimized deck. Breaking beyond 15 without a 'netdeck' usually requires both deckbuilding skills, and a decent collection

Quick question...

If you want to climb the ladder, there really is no substitute for playing one of the "netdecks."
If you are happy with your rank playing an off-meta deck, then go with it. Ladder ranking should not concern you. Play what you enjoy.
Can you share a link? What should I understand from a "non murloc paladin" deck?
I can tell you something from my experience - back in Un'Goro I played nothing else but jade elemental shaman:

I think a goal of 15 is reasonable.
