Huh, you know, I didn't get Voodoo Doll at first, but the interaction with Demonfire and Demonheart make it really interesting, not to mention stuff like Mortal Coil if it can net you two card draws.
EDIT: Just checked the submission post, and the creator also gives Power Overwhelming, Imp-losion, and Sacrificial Pact as examples. This is definitely a card that's more than meets the eye.
Well, here's an easy way to solve how this works... What happens if your enemy Mage has a Demon out (from Piloted Shredder or Unstable Portal or just Imp Master or something) and then you target it with Demonfire or Sacrificial Pact but it turns out they have a Spellbender? What happens to the Spellbender? That will give us our answers for what does or should happen with the Voodoo Doll. But I know that Spellbender can be killed by Shadow Word: Death, so...
some great cards this week! Voted for 11 which is the most I remember. WD ppl. I just about like Bread Broker (simple, quaint almost poetic card there Vanas :D), but that top row is really very cool. (edit
911!)Not entirely. I don't think Angel of Harmony gives 0-Attack creatures the ability to attack, for example.
Monara also allows you to interact with cards in new ways. You can now Shadow Word: Death your opponents Sludge Belcher, use Big Game Hunter to take out otherwise safe cards like Ysera and Chromaggus. Also, it doesn't have the "always" clause Lightspawn has, meaning effects that buff attacks like Abusive Sergeant still matter.
What stirs beneath the sands...
Sands of Ahn'Qiraj: A Custom Hearthstone Adventure
20% of the finalists were totems. Just sayin.
Galavant Animation
Rarity is another difference. You can't run two monara in your deck, you can run two angels. I thinks its funny how we both had almost the exact same idea, and both were popular enough to make it to this round.
Voted for Stormwind Rider and Gnome Warrior. I just love the design of Stormwind Rider, what with requiring another card to combo with it for it to be valuable. Gnome Warrior is another cool card that interacts with a part of the game that has previously not been explored with yet. It's very creative.
I'm new to this forum and was very excited to see these creative card ideas. I hope to attempt to create a card for next weeks competition. I think this weekly design competition is a really cool idea.
I think I'm more sad that Magic Carp didn't get enough votes to make it than I am that my own submission didn't. Even sadder is that HearthRhythm didn't IMGUR them, so now they're lost forever! Urgh, you fool!
Anyway, narrowing my votes down to three, I'm going to go with Sentry Totem, Shadow Tactician, and Voodoo Doll.
Sentry Totem: 5/5. Upvoted this one during the submission phase, it's a really awesome card that is perfectly themed. My only gripe is the card art, but as far as I can tell there isn't any other Sentry Totem art out there, so I have to give it a pass.
Shadow Tactician: 4/5. I'll defer to my previous review of this card: "I really like this card, it's very "clean" looking from art to text, and the effect is pretty unique. I'm not sure if I love the idea of getting combos this easily, but I'm not necessarily against it either. One minor nitpick though, and this applies to a lot of cards this week; I feel like a card like this would, outside of this week's theme, realistically have at least 2 attack - those knives look pretty sharp."
Voodoo Doll: 4/5. Love the theme on this one. Personally I don't think it should be epic, since the effect is "big", but the minion itself is not. Still, the card art is awesome, and it feels above average in terms of authenticity.
Reviews For the Rest:
Gnome Warrior: 4/5. A unique concept, and one that I think would work, but I think it panders to aggro decks. I'm not one of these people who thinks that aggro is some great, inherent evil, but I'm bored of seeing it, and cards like this would only encourage it. Giving this one a generous 4/5 due to how authentic it looks and feels.
The Imitate Parrot: 1/5. Amusing, but Faceless Manipulator exists. I don't think 1 less mana makes this any better. I also think this should either be a Legendary, or have a more generic name; "The Imitate Parrot" sounds very specific.
Breadbroker: 3/5. Love the idea here, but I don't get the theme. Just seems like an excuse to use the card art.
Monara: 1/5. A card's authenticity is important to me, and this one is something that would never be added, even hypothetically, considering the character. Arguments can be made when a card depicts someone or something vague, nameless, or generic, but this one is very specific, and, aheh, no. Obviously this is just my personal standard; I don't think that the cards we make stand some miraculous shot at being added, but I also think that we should design them as if they were to be. I also just don't get the theme here, it feels contrived.
Totem of Decay: 3/5. Bonus points for being a direct reference to the TCG, but I'm not feeling it. Seems really strong for 2 mana, especially with 5 health, not to mention you could drop two of them and the effects (based on the wording) would stack.
Totem of Balance: 1/5. Totem of Balance is anything but, and the card art is so overused that it feels like a demerit to even use it at this point. I'm not sure what the "theme" is here, but then it's a generic looking totem, so you can project anything onto it.
Stormwind Rider: 3/5. I dig this one, although maybe it should have been 2 mana. That you have to combo it doesn't change the fact that it has 3 effects for 1, which means that, if nothing else, it's a better Shieldbearer. As a side note, I like the idea that this is actually supposed to be an "actor", which I think lets slide the fact that it has a weapon but 0 Attack (a pet peeve of mine). My only issue is that I don't think anyone would guess it's supposed to be an actor at first glance; it should probably have been named "Stormwind Rider" (with the quotations) or something more obvious.
Twin Val'Kyr: 1/5. I'm not feeling it, the theme is shakey and 0 Attack doesn't fit either of the two characters, but especially not if they are together in one card (which is, in itself, not very palatable).
Air Revenant: 2/5. Similar to Stormwind Rider, it's an interesting combo card, but unlike the aforementioned card, this one feels a lot more crazy due to the Windfury. Shaman doesn't have the static buffs that Paladin does, but they do have a lot of fairly low cost spells that would make this one hell of a multi-card combo. I'm not too crazy about that idea, I think this lets people wombo a little too easy.
Charm Totem: 2/5. I'm not a fan of mind control nonsense in general, that's the long and the short of it.
Tundra Hunter: 2/5. As mentioned previously, it's an armed minion with 0 Attack. I don't get the theme either, since I'm not sure how killing a minion would give you its Attack, especially if it's a friendly minion who's on your side to begin with.
Grounding Totem: 3/5. A -2/-2/-2 Wee Spellstopper. Well, I guess that's balanced, but it makes me sad about Wee Spellstopper. Class variance, I guess.
Naaru Priestess: 3/5. A strong anti-aggro card, but perhaps too strong, or rather strong in the wrong way. On the other hand, it's priest only, so it's not something you'd see constantly. Not feeling too strongly about it one way or the other.
Goblin Saboteur: 3/5. I dig it, up until it's labeled as a pirate. That feels really forced and out of place.
Angel of Harmony: 1/5. I'm not feeling this one at all.
Forest Propagator: 4/5. I'll defer to my previous review of this card: "This is a minion that's pretty much guaranteed to get value in some way, but doesn't feel strictly overpowered, and that's hard to pull off. My only problem with this is that by giving the Druid so many tokens, it helps to enable "the combo" far more often, which I'm kinda sick of seeing. Maybe if the deck was just about having an endless army of treants to beat your opponent down, that would be okay, but I feel like Savage Roar would sneak in there somewhere."
Galakrond: 3/5. I'll defer to my previous review of this card: "Galakrond seems too "big" for Hearthstone when you consider that Deathwing is currently the biggest collectible minion and it took the combined efforts of the 5 Aspects to destroy Galakrond. As mentioned for a previous card, I don't see how this wouldn't have a base attack value normally, BUT I suppose there's no way you're going to play this without getting value out of that battlecry. Still, a 4/12 Galakrond or something along those lines just seems bizarre.
Emperor of Pain: 3/5. I dig the look and feel of this one, but I think the effect is too hard to trigger multiple times in a single turn for it to be any good. Maybe going with a more "active" effect like Floating Watcher would have been better. Come to think of it, why not just use Floating Watcher? Because Taunt?
Timid Squire: 2/5. It's a better Target Dummy, until it's forced into Stealth, but the stealth isn't really a drawback here, since realistically you would play this with the intention of it ending up in stealth. The effect doesn't happen in reverse (playing a minion won't remove the stealth), so the sole purpose of the card appears to be huge, multi-card wombo-combos.
I just want to say it is awesome to make it to the finals, and thank you to everyone who voted. I'd like to wish good luck to everyone in the competition.
Side note is it too late to make a small edit to my card? I have a typo in there I wanted to fix earlier but was unable to edit my post.
Aaaand another episode of THE LORE HOUR!
Voodoo Doll by pui980178: Voodoo Dolls are a common weapon of gurubashi troll voodoo, and the effect nicely reflects what these dolls tend to do. It's weird that it's a warlock class card, because voodoo doesn't directly apply to warlocks in the warcraft universe, but other than that, it's just fine. Wait. What? It has... the Demon tag? Oops. Nope, Voodoo Dolls are not demons. NOT Correct.
Gnome Warrior by nobravery: Talking about playing it safe from the lore perspective. It's a gnome warrior! It's got a gnome warrior on the card art! It works! Correct.
The Imitate Parrot by Kheesan: Although parrots tend to not have any powers in Warcraft, Hearthstone tends to easily break those rules. And that's fine. Otherwise, the parrot that imitates totally exists as our favorite friends of yarr. Correct.
Breadbroker by vanasbry000: This specific image is of the most famous bread vendor in World of Warcraft. She who wanders the Ironforge halls before the auction house. Bread aren't very shady, and they usually just vendor instead of broke, but you know, this gal might as well be broking her bread. Correct.
Monara by M_Surge: I looked up who this was, and regretted it immediately. NOT Correct.
Totem of Decay by KittyB52: Now, this is the first interesting one from a lore perspective. Totems are generally used by shamans, and shamans generally make use of the four elements within warcraft. Fire, water, earth, air. But Decay does not belong to any of the elements. However, Dark Shamans from the Iron Horde, have used corrupted shamanistic spells. We're talking "Toxic Tornado", "Foul Stream", "Foul Geyser", "Falling Ash". I could see the Totem of Decay fall under this category of Dark Shaman spells, as the opposite of the normal shaman's Healing Stream Totem. Correct.
Sentry Totem by Lord_HS: Sentry Totem is sweetly well-known in warcraft, and has been a totem that existed in Warcraft 3, apart from many, many other totems that only began to appear in World of Warcraft. It's almost a shame that Sentry Totem was removed from World of Warcraft, and hasn't gotten into Hearthstone yet. VERY correct.
Totem of Balance by unicornpuncher: This is a rather strange totem type. The name (nor the art) doesn't indicate what type of magic, or element is used to create this totem. The elemental planes are in fact often unbalanced, but the shamans often attempt to rebalance it. I guess, in that respect, this totem serves the generic shaman's purpose, and is therefore Correct.
Stormwind Rider by G4merGuy09: Stormwind has had a lot of riders over many years! It's a shame that we never got to see any of them in the games. Funnily enough, the art of this card shows the model of the Stormwind Knight, in World of Warcraft. The model was barely ever used throughout the course of the game, except in Hellfire Peninsula. But the Stormwind Knight in Hearthstone doesn't look anything like it. Just a thought. Correct.
Twin Val'kyr by Orak_unluck: Twin Val'kyr were a boss in Crusader's Coliseum, and this is obviously known to everyone now, as there's cards for these gals now. As the two specifically exist in the warcraft universe as well-known beings, the effect of this card doesn't reflect what the Val'kyr actually do (then again, neither do the new TGT legendaries reflect what they actually do), so... just a Correct.
Air Revenant by GeneraleBeduin: Air revenants have appeared mostly in Northrend (almost exclusively), and they like to Charge up, they like to Overload, and they like Windfury. Every keyword given here matters a lot to them, and for that i'll give it a VERY Correct.
Charm Totem by Sinthuja: Now, remembering the talk about Totem of Decay... let's go back to that. Totems are generally used in combination with an element, and if not, we have the Dark Shaman's befouled elements to use. However, Charm totems is very, very specific. It's the ONLY totem ever used by the arrakoa, in an instance by name of Sethekk Halls. I remember its existence well, as not killing it caused a lot of trouble. This very specific totem type falls under the category lore-viable still, only for that appearance, implying it was used in combination with arrakoan shadow magic. Correct.
Tundra Hunter by Cryss16: There's quite a bit of Tundra Hunters, and actually, there's MANY, MANY Tundra Hunters. We're talking about the Borean Tundra in Northrend here (it's the only named tundra of Warcraft). The creator could've made the hunter come from any specific place, but he made it the tundra. And it just so happens, Borean Tundra is absolutely packed with hunters. For that choice, I salute you. VERY Correct.
Shadow Tactician by adriamrk: The card art is a little dark, but from what I can tell by the red glowing eyes, elf-ish posture, and the clothing, it appears to be close to a Dark Ranger. Not entirely so, but mostly so. Although most Dark Rangers focus on their bow, and don't pay too much attention to stealth tactics, they've got a wider range of abilities than that. Some Dark Rangers were shown to use Shadowstep, and wielded daggers such as this one. Although not all Dark Rangers hang out in shadows, they are definitely all considered tacticians, as commanders in Sylvanas' army. Correct.
Grounding Totem by halfhalf: The Grounding Totem has been a spell in World of Warcraft for a while now. It's seen a lot of custom Hearthstone iterations too. No need to go much into detail about it, as there's not much detail other than that it's an anti-spell totem. Correct.
Naaru Priestess by DialM4Murloc: The same thing as with the Siren of Naaru that won a competition some weeks (months?) ago. Naaru Priestesses are Draenei. There's not been any instances where the priestesses specifically called Priestesses of the Naaru are not Draenei. The Naaru are very closely tied to the Draenei, as being their saviors during their escape from Argus. The Naaru have very few special connections with other races. Blood elves do also have this connection, and could perhaps become Naaru priestesses too. Since this Naaru Priestess is human, i'm gonna have to give it a thumbs down. NOT Correct.
Goblin Saboteur by DragonEU: The goblin saboteur has existed in the early warcraft days as a suicidal unit. Although the existence of this military force has been grounded in warcraft lore for a long, long time already, the effect of this card is actually not very suicidal whatsoever. Yes, it's sabotage, but the goblin saboteur usually sabotaged something, by running into it, and exploding. Goblin inginuity for you, so i'm just giving it a-... wait. It's a Pirate. Oops. Nope. Goblin Saboteurs aren't pirates. NOT Correct.
Angel of Harmony by PupleMD: This one's quite simple, actually. Angels don't exist in Warcraft. There are 'angelic forms' like the Guardian of Kings, and Spirit Healers (who look very, very similar to angels), but an actual, named angel was never mentioned. Both of these examples (the guardian and the spirit healer) also look just as similar to normal spirits, who come to the aid of the living, appearing in transparent, ghost-ish forms. Since the term 'Angel' has more cultural significance than just describing a transparent human with wings (and this card art's human isn't transparent), i'll have to say it's a problem. There have been some major slip-ups in Warcraft, when it comes to including heaven and hell, and its messengers, into the world. For example, there's many, many angels painted on Titan structures in WoW, and also some in Karazhan. 'Hell' is used as a curse word by some characters (like Uther), yet hell hath no meaning in Warcraft. Chris Metzen has mentioned that they retconned out the mention of archangels in the Warcraft 1 manual. All in all, it's safe to say, angels are not wanted in the Warcraft universe, despite some creatures in it being heavily inspired by them. NOT Correct.
Forest Propagator by Cyg2112: This one's kind of interesting due to the card art. The only living trees we know of in Warcraft are Ancients. Tree of Life, Ancient of War, Ancient of Lore, Ancient of Wonders, Ancient Protector... the card art shows none of these types. BUT, since Ancients don't seem to have a strict form, and mostly just have to look tree-ish and stone-ish with leafs, i'll give it a pass. The way the card looks, it might even be an Ancient in a harsh winter. R.I.P beard. :( Correct.
Galakrond by Lotusassassin2: Galakrond was the dragon of dragons, and he clearly shows it on this card. Not to mention, he ate other dragons. That's how much of a dragon he was. The effect works very nicely with his lore, and he's a very important character when it comes to the dragons' evolution in Warcraft. VERY Correct.
Emperor of Pain by KaoticKreature: The name of the Emperor of Pain is a little odd. It's very non-specific along with the card art. As the card art is that of a Forsaken warlock, he can't be a real emperor. Can you give yourself the title 'Emperor of Pain' in Warcraft? Well, maybe, if you were evil enough. It still doesn't make much sense. Emperor as a title was used almost never (in Pandaria and in Ahn'Qiraj). The "of Pain" is only used as a title for demons. And the card art does not show a demon (even though it's tagged as one). So that's bad. I'm gonna have to say no on this one. Due to the name, I just can't establish it somewhere in the lore. NOT Correct.
Timid Squire by HSD_Cycas: There are many a squires who are very gnome, and very shield-bearing. They can be quite the timid guys too! Correct.
That's it for this week. If you've got any complaints, feel free to tell me any you might have. If you think I was totally wrong somewhere, point out the spot where I was, and i'll gladly take the blame!
First of all, thanks for the feedback. I have never played WoW, but I really enjoy the lore and try to keep accurate to it as much as I can. The reason I titled it 'Emperor' is because I wanted his name to be somewhat leading. My first iteration was 'Master' but that sounded a bit dull. As for 'of Pain', I tried to fit it in with his ability, and I guess he kind of looked like a Demon to me. Anyway, thanks for the info, will consider this next time.
.
Glad to see I made it to the finals again! :) Several very interesting cards this week. I gave my vote this week to Voodoo Doll, Gnome Warrior and Sentry Totem. Those 3 cards really stood out for me! Great job :D
May your nets always be full! 🎣
Looks like it's gonna be Voodoo Doll in first, Gnome Warrior in second, and mine (Stormwind Rider) in third.
This is the third time for me to be at 2nd place...
Anyway, congratulations to @pui980178 .Wherever you go and whatever you do, you always create marvelous things. Though I don't like your Voodoo Doll this time, you deserve the champion. Hope to see more of your work in future - I mean, not only in Hearthstone.
THERE IS NO GAME.
