As someone who *JUST* came in first with Dancin Daryl, I can tell you that most of the tier lists I've seen are pure poppycock. Presently I have come in 1st 20 times, and have been top in the top 4, 45 times. I have won 1st with the following Heroes:
Dancin Daryl
Jaraxxus
A.F.Kay
Infinite Toki (Pre-nerf)
Mukla
Millificent
Patchwerk
Lich King
Bartendotron
Nefarian
Some of those seem pretty obvious, as per the tier lists; but some of those heroes people have warned against like the plague (Daryl, Bartendo, Jaraxxus) and so on. If you develop a strategy for each individual hero, you will almost always come top 4 (3 in my experience). Don't always subscribe to the tribes. I have come in 1st 4 times with a menagerie deck, and it was wins by landslide. Think Murlocs are bad? Not when they all have poisonous and have been buffed to insanity the entire game. There are a million and one strats for this mode, and I am certainly thinking of writing a few in the near future/when more heroes release. The initial point of this post is to point out that the tier lists shouldn't be adhered to like they are law. You have tons of good options available.
Currently rated at 4700 something or other, I started at 4k (I assume everyone who preordered did) and I went down to about 3300 my first few games while I was learning strategies and such. Best of luck everyone!

You can win with anyone, but it doesn't mean that some heroes aren't innately better than others. Nef, Rag, & Patches for example. Basically the same hero powers with drastically different usefulness. Patches is so bad, they should probably completely rework him.
I honestly haven't looked at any tier lists since the balance changes, but I am dead certain that some of the heroes are just plain bad.
But don't just follow a tier list blindly. Only look at lists that give solid reasoning for their rankings. And even then, if their logic doesn't match your play style, their No. 1 is not going to perform well for you.
I've watched a wide variety of streamers playing this game, and they often have completely contradictory opinions about specific heroes and units. But then as I watch them play, I can see why they hold those beliefs. If you dislike a certain unit that I love, but then you make decisions during the game that are very different from how I would play, and we both manage to achieve reasonable win rates, it means neither is actually more correct than the other.

It is certainly possible to do sort of well with any hero. Win... not so sure. All I can say from about 10 rounds (tried it out for the first time today) is that I have yet to see a single round where Millificent isn't AT LEAST in the top 3. Of course, everyone makes different experiences, but some heroes definitely seem to have a bigger chance to win than others.
I agree that tier list is not that important. But still it plays a little role in overall scheme of things and sometimes that may be just enough to make the difference.
Currently I have 37 1st places, 94 top 4 and a rating of 5305 and you can basicly win with any hero as long as you get a good board. - I actually really like Patches as he have gotten me 1st many times - His heropower allows you to push early tiers as it will most likely kill something at tier 3 and 4. Get to 4 and get a triple into Lightfang - gg. Rags heropower looks stronger, but cost 1 more which is not good for pushing early tiers. Both heropower can help destroying divine shields late game or snipe some of the important unbuffed minions. - Nefarian is good simple because he can destroy divine shields. - The Lich King is good if you can get a triple deathrattle minion like the snake late game. - George The fallen allow the lesser tribes (Murlocs and demons) to be stronger and can protect minions that have no tribe - strong late game if you can get there. - Millificent Manastorm - Forces you kind of to play mech which can be difficult if you don't get offered good mechs still got 1st with beasts as her. - Patchwerk - Extra health is good as you can push tiers early and take a hit, but you can also play as normal and have a larger health pool late game which will almost always get you in top 4. - The Great Akazamzarak - While his secrets are not always usefull, Iceblock is really good as it can make you survive atleast long enought for top 4. - Dancing' Deryl - Don't underestimate his heropower - getting lots of tokens in the early game and getting lucky with the buffs can give you good initial minions such as a early buffed Hydra - gotten me 1st a couple of times. - The Rat King - Really strong early and mid game and will get you to top 4 if things work out. - Lord Jaraxxus - He got me to 1st in some of my early games before he even got buffed. He is not that strong, but if you go all in on demons +1/+1 each turn can be quite good. - The Curator - One of my favorite - starting with an Amalgam is really strong as it can get any buffs you pick up and will basicly always get you in top 4. - Pyramad - I trought he was really strong the first times I played him - he got me 1st a couple of times in the start - I don't think his heropower is that good anymore after learning the game mode. - Yogg-Saron - One of my other favorites as he will always have strong early and mid game getting you into that sweet top 4. - Toki - She was so strong before the nerf getting me 1st many times and top 4 for sure everytime - now her heropower isn't as strong before late game, but still good enought to make it top 4. - King Mukla - The buff made him really good, but forces you to fokus on beasts.
Heroes I have play a couple of times, but never made it far with: Queen Wagtoggle, Shudderwock, A. F. Kay, Trade Prince Gallywix - You want to go wide with Queen, but you can't always get that sweet Lightfang -You want to hit those battlecries and use heropower with Shudder, but Bran just does it so much better - AFK getting a tier 3 and 4 isn't always good unless you can get the synergy and you also took some damage in the early game. - Trade Prince saving up gold is good, but rarely matters.
Havent tried these heroes: Lich Baz'hial - just seems really bad - taking all that damage for a coin - not worth it. Bartendotron - Nothing special getting early tiers Professor Putricide - Heropower is only good if you can get a good cleave minions Giantfin - Saw Trump play him and win with the heropower - seems good, just not picking him over other heroes
My favorite strat is going wide and getting an early Lightfang or Bran - seems to be way better than both Beast and Mech tribe, but depends on how lucky you are.
Now that’s one hero I’m not sure I’ll be able to work out. Since I wrote this post, I’ve managed to come in first with two new hero’s. Yogg and Professor Putricide, both menagerie decks. Shit is heating up

I totally get your points and I'd 100% agree. But the fact that you just named like 7 Heroes that all together can "easily go top 4 every time" made me laugh :P
A hero isn't automatically good just because you won once with said hero. There are a lot of factors than can influence a win or loss. Tier lists, made by streamers, are very often a summary of their experiences in Battlegrounds, having played many of the heroes multiple times. Your one example does not come close to their experience.
You say: "don't listen to tier lists, because here's my experience". They say: "listen to our tier lists, because here's our experience". No different than what you're doing yourself.
Small tip for playing Bartenodron: treat him as AFK squared. Use first turns to push him into level 5 and then you have exclusive choice of the best minions.

That's more like a Patchwerk strat, but it's definitely how you play him.
A better plan is to wait until Elise comes out, because she's strictly better than Bartendotron. They should probably retire him at that point.

Every tier list is different because it depends a lot on luck, just because you won more with that hero it doesn’t mean it’s the best one
Favorite Cards: 1. Lord Jaraxxus | 2. Malygos| 3. Edwin VanCleef | 4. Zephrys the Great| 5. Deathwing

Worst one can be said though - Pyramad, Queen Wagtoggle, Patches
Rat King is close behind
Infinite Toki is still powerful post-nerf
Vote for my Card Design Submission! I love this one!

Tier lists are meaningless and Infinite Toki is bad.
So far I've won easily, multiple times, with Yogg, Nefarian and Patchwerk.
With low enough elo, everything hero/strat is OP and every tier list is meaningless.
Toki after nerfs is quite weak
nefariam and rag and the Mech girl are quite strong
Favorite Cards: 1. Lord Jaraxxus | 2. Malygos| 3. Edwin VanCleef | 4. Zephrys the Great| 5. Deathwing

Theoretically professor putr. should be quite strong since he can buff hydra or the mech that deals AOE.

it's weird, I would say Lich Baz'hial is the most OP hero so far
always ending like 3 - 6 HP in the early game and then devastating everything by non-stop winstreak
very underrated IMHO

i tried her one time and i won easily. you have to tap early every turn, to get value out of the heropower
