The Custom Class Competition is back for its eighth iteration! Veterans and newcomers are welcome as we kick off the first Hearthpwn Class Competition post-Core Set!
This is the Discussion Thread! Ask for feedback, return the favour, ask questions, etc. here, anyone part of or not part of the contest is welcome.
Unfortunately, MvonTzekagrad, MrBurger, freddocino, and Flaytonio scored the lowest during Week Two, and they are eliminated.
This is a posting tutorial for the website imgur.com. If you use another website, the process will be similar.
It is recommended you use hearthcards.net to create your cards. Save the generated card to your device.
Upload the image to imgur.com. You do not need an account.
After your image is uploaded, many links will be generated. Find the "Direct link". It will have a .jpg or .png at the end of the link. Copy the link.
On your hearthpwn post, find the "Insert/edit image" button:
Paste the direct link. This is recommended but not mandatory: You may choose to make the image smaller by changing the image dimensions.
Overview
All contestants will create one custom class, following the layout of Demon Hunter.
The contest will run for 5 weeks.
Week One: 10 Basic cards.
This contest, as Demon Hunter introduced Rush and Lifesteal into the Basic Set keyword pool, the list of keywords you are allowed to use is as follows:
The following keywords are banned. Discover: It is strange for a new player starting out with a Basic set to be discovering from cards they have no idea of. Secret: Complex mechanic, requires at least 3 out of 10 of your slots. Class keywords: Blizzard is pretty clear about saving these for Initiate. Immune and Counter: Far too niche to have a place in Basic.
Week Two: 10 "Initiate" cards.
"Initiate" means the supplemental 20 cards Blizzard printed for Demon Hunter. Yours do not have to be named Initiate.
Week Three: The other 10 "Initiate" cards.
Week Four: Your pre-Core expansion cards.
Week Five: Core Set consolidation + 15 post-Core expansion cards.
Be sure to read over Rules & Information section as there is a lot to go over this contest due to the complex shifts caused by the introduction of the Core Set.
Submission Format
You must adhere to the following submission rules or risk disqualification:
Unless otherwise stated, you are allowed three cards to showcase. All other cards must be hidden in a spoiler.
You may include flavour texts. For the showcase cards, their texts do not need to be spoilered.
All tokens must be in a spoiler.
You may include a single banner at the top of your submission post. It may not be overly fancy. This is entirely subjective and the moderators have the right to remove a banner they feel is too fancy and, therefore, gives an inherent advantage over other posts.
Golden cards are not allowed, nor are huge images that feature your cards with a background.
If you choose to include other images other than a banner, they must be hidden behind a spoiler.
Flavour text is allowed behind a spoiler.
Golden cards are not allowed.
Challenges
Week Four has *a lot* of challenges, or rather, a challenge system. You may *pick and choose* boons and banes this week! However, the banes and boons you pick must even out to be 0 points.
Example: You have 3 points in boons, you will then need to pick 3 points in banes, it does not matter how you get the three points, so long as they are equal.
BOONS
You may showcase a 4th card. (ONE POINT)
This boon has two options (TWO POINTS):
If your chosen pre-core expansion has two legendaries, you can have one as a spell or weapon.
If your chosen expansion mandates a legendary minion alongside a legendary weapon/spell, this Boon is not applicable, example, KAC, Ungoro
Instead, if your chosen expansion has one legendary minion, you can replace one epic card with a legendary minion. (This is what happened in TGT)
You can bring back an old cycle from a past expansion, example, Illidari Studies. (TWO POINTS)
If your chosen expansion had one class with only one Hero Card, you may also have one like Witchwood, Rastakhan. (FOUR POINTS) If you expansion was one where multiple classes had a Hero Card, this Boon is not applicable.
BANES
You must showcase at least two common cards. (ONE POINT)
Only three cards in your pre-core set can have four lines of text. (ONE POINT)
You have a choice: No Deathrattles, Rush, or Taunt in your pre-core set. (ONE POINT)
You must have a card for every mana cost between 0-10, inclusive. The remaining four cards do not need to follow this rule. (ONE POINT)
Rules & Information
How is the Initiate set split in half?
There are 8 commons, 6 rares, 4 epics, and 2 legendaries. That makes splitting the Initiate set in half rather easy.
For Weeks Two and Three, contestants will create 4 commons, 3 rares, 2 epics, and 1 legendary.
What does pre-Core expansion mean?
You may select any expansion before the Core set was introduced! Anything from GvG all the way up to Darkmoon Faire is up for grabs.
What does post-Core expansion mean?
Either Forged in the Barrens or United in Stormwind.
What do I do about class cycles?
You must have at least one all-class cycle from your chosen expansions.All-class, in this context, means both a cycle shared between all 9 classes, or a cycle that the League of EVIL classes or Explorers classes share.
While, at first, it seems to make sense that your custom class should adhere to all all-class cycles in a given expansion, Demon Hunter, for example, did not have a Prime legendary, therefore you only need to use one such cycle.
What about card cycles not shared between all nine classes, like Studies spell cards, or Aspirant cards?
You may pick and choose from those, these are not mandatory.
What about Hero Cards?
So after much debate and discussion, Hero Cards are allowed with an asterisk. More information will be given, but for now, take note that they are only allowed in Week Three.
Can I rename the "Initiate" set to whatever I want?
Yes.
What watermarks do I use?
For the "Initiate" set, you can use whatever watermark you think makes the most sense. There is a list of watermarks here.
Do I have to follow the rarity distribution of the Demon Hunter Initiate set?
Yes.
You may not introduce a Legendary spell, weapon, or Hero in the Initiate set as there are none in the current Demon Hunter example we've been given.
Do I need to adhere to Warcraft lore?
During this contest, I will be experimenting with asking contestants to integrate a little bit more Warcraft lore into their submissions. However, for the most part, you will be free to ignore Warcraft lore.
Do I need class-exclusive keyword?
No.
Can I do a Monk or Death Knight class?
No.
Can I create my own spell school or minion tribe?
We'll try this out this competition: Yes, you can.
Competition Process
Week 1: July 7th - July 14th Week 2: July 17th - July 24nd Week 3: July 25rd - August 1st Week 4: August 3rd - August 10th Week 5: August 11th - August 18th
All threads close at 3 AM, EST. There may be delays due to United in Stormwind being released. I also do have some overnight shifts at my workplace, so I will give 24 hours notice if there needs to be a delay.
How many cards of each rarity do we need to make exactly?
Ashes and Scholomance gave Demon Hunter 2 legendaries, 2 epics, 5 rares and 6 commons. (Excluding the minisets and only counting half of the dual class cards).
Dark moon however have him 2 legendaries, 3 epics, 2 rares and 8 commons (not counting miniset).
Honestly, I kinda expected that, this week's set was kinda all over the place, without much synergies. I could probably divide cards better, maybe that would help.
Scaleborns would be introduced in Descend of Dragons, as it fits them best. A dragon war in the skies, where even the mighty Aspects themselves joined to fight Galakrond once more. Given the convergence of all these dragonflights from red and green to nether, lightning, infinite and even wax, it would only make sense that the chromatic dragonflight would appear too, with the only true chromatic dragon ever created at it's head.
It's body made by Nefarian, and its life given by Benedictus himself, Chromatus has the power of all 5 dragonflights, their combined strength, magic and Heritage. As the crown of my set, you go on a mini quest to animate Chromatus yourself, by granting him all 5 Heritages. If you do, he becomes a small nuke, destroying all enemy minions through Poisonous, healing you to full most likely through Lifesteal, and being a strong defender with Divine Shield and Taunt. Spell Damage only serves to finish the opponent.
Since the chromatic dragonflight is my class's faction, a breath spell is required too.
The idea behind it is that it allows Heritage cards to boost a spell too, besides minions. Thematically it fits the chromatic dragonflight as they can imitate all the 5 main dragonflights.

Hey, congrats to eveyone who made it. A shame I won't be able to see the continuation of other classes.
I have two questions about this week:
1, I'd like to go with Descent of Dragons as an expansion. What rarity distribution should I follow (as DH was not around back then), a classic 3322 or the Demon Hunter Ashes of Outlands distribution?
2, Isn't the 4th BOON option in challenge impossible? It requires 4 point but every Bane is for 1 point, so you'd need to do all four of them, but in order to complete the first Bane (Showcase a card from every rarity) you require a boon where you can showcase 4 cards which costs 1 Bane. So you must have 5 Boon points, but can only collect 4 Banes. Is that right, or have I misread something?

You follow whatever rarity distribution you expansion had.
I'll tweak the requirement to force you to show at least 1 common, 1 rare, and 1 epic.
@McF4rtson I really like this new challenge system ! Choosing from a list of positives and negatives gives a wide array of inspiration points. It's also cool to work with restrictions you chose. I think it will also make every submission a little more unique which is great !
Maybe it would work better if each Boon had a Bane attached, so you don't have to deal with as many cornercases and can design them to complement each other. It kinda looks like you wanted to do that anyways. That would also get rid of the point system which seems unecessarly complex to me.
Very happy to see you're always willing to experiment with the formula of these competitions !
Congrats to everyone who made it through to this stage. We had around 27 total votes. (1st place got 1/3rd of the votes, most people got around 1/4, so there was definitely some vote overlap).
I'm going to be doing Scholomance Academy, and my boon and bane are pretty simple; showcase an extra card, and show all rarities.
I've made 3/4 dual-class cards for each class so far. I've decided the classes I'll be sharing will be Shaman and Priest (regardless of the proper order laid out in the expansion - doesn't really work for more than 10 classes). Here they are:
I recognize it's somewhat hard to distinguish the class border here. Unavoidable I'm afraid. Self-Assured Senior: Compare Frazzled Freshman for the flavor. Really like the art on this one. Meant to support a buff archetype, fits well into Priest and Spiritwalker (compare Test Subject for an idea of the kind of deck this goes in). Top of the Class: Unconventional board clear. Feedback on this is lukewarm I suppose? Hard to tell with people lol. Trainee Trendsetter: Had a lot of thinking to do coming up with a name. Think Seance but you can use another spell as the trigger.
The "Totem in the name" thing just sort of happened. These all synergize with each other - should be relatively plain how they do it. Totem Mayhem is a stretch for play on words with 'Total Mayhem'. Totem Grower follows along with Totem Golem and Totem Goliath in terms of how the naming goes for totems with attack.
I'm going to start on unique class cards now, but if anyone's got any ideas for legendaries I'm all ears.
I really know nothing about these contests lmao. Not only did I get eliminated early, but literally every week all of the classes I voted for were eliminated as well. This time I voted for MvonTzeskagrad's and MrBurger's classes and yeah they are out now. Anyway, good luck to everyone who is still competing and to all those who have been eliminated - don't worry, every one of us can do better next time.
Two questions, if we choose Scholomance to we need to make 14 cards (including dual cards)?
Can we choose the expansion that we set for the class launch?
Yeah, I mentioned this to other people who asked. Whatever expansion you choose, you just follow everything in it, rarity distributions, dual-class, etc.
Read the information section over again.
What does pre-Core expansion mean? You may select any expansion before the Core set was introduced! Anything from GvG all the way up to Darkmoon Faire is up for grabs.
Hi everyone ! I'm excited for this Boomsday set, it's one of my favorite expansions ! For the rarity spread, I'm using Ashes of Outland as a base. It has the same 3/3/2/2 spread as Boomsday for most classes and was the introductory set for Demon Hunter. For Boomsday, I'm making a legendary spell as well as a Project card, and of course a ton of mechs ! The set might not be as cohesive as some of the other classes were for that expansion but I think that makes sense given the fact that it's the first expansion for the Chronomancer. I'm still basing a lot of stuff off of clockwork and time travel since that's what makes sense for both the class and the expansion. Here goes !
I've gone a little crazy with tokens (again), hope it's fine.
For challenges I thinking Boons 1 and 3 as well as Banes 1, 2 and 3.
Chromatus seems a little weak doesn't it? It does seem weird calling a 10 mana board wipe + reno weak, but it requires a lot of setup, so it is hard to tell just how useful he is. You have to be holding 6 cards, or play so few minions that your board state is extremely passive for multiple turns.
Chromatic Breath is fine, but giving your hero Divine Shield is a little strange, while Sapphire Breath just seems to be the clear winner.
Another class starting to experiment with fatigue.
Delayed Machine is rather strange. I think it's ok, but I feel like it doesn't really achieve a whole lot and the card slot could be better utilized. It also goes a bit against what appears to be a tiny big mech theme with instant automaton, since you want to draw it by turn 6. Now being able to draw it with card lessens your chance of getting a 12/12 taunt on turn 6 from happening.
I don't really get racing clock. Do you draw first the turn after or something, automatically before your opponent?
Lastly, and this is something I can't really put into an eloquent comment, but this week's expansion from you feels less cohesive than your others, not quite as unified in playstyle or focus. That can be a good or bad thing, but the bottom line is it *is* something I noticed. An example is what I said a bit above, how you have a tiny big mech theme that is like 1 build-around card and two big mechs to go along with it.
JeanTheMedicRat - I really like Chromatus and the Breath seems good as well. Altough, maybe it could be reworded a little since it allways deals 5 damage. (Deal 5 damage, gain a bonus effect based on your last heritage played.) Not sure how it would look on card, and probably nothing crucial, just a minor idea. Maybe worth noting that no Breath was epic back in Dragons, but they weren't of the same rarity as well, so probably also not a problem.
teknician - The class pairing seems really good to me, I do not have any problem with your cards, they seem fine and well balanced and also works good for both paired classes. Only the Totem Mayhem may be a little bit limiting in design space as strangely Blizzard decided not to unnerf Tuskar Totemic (but that one summoned any totem if I recall correctly.
Side Note: I never liked blizzard decision to have Taurens, Orcs, Ogres (Ogremancer could have been a Trogg, at least) and Trolls in Scholomance (lore wise) and I was terribly disappointed that not a single legendary was a Dwarven character. They probably do not fit your class, though.
Klipce - I realy like Fluid Creation, seems like a smart way to use Magnetic, I do not know what (Draw yours first') means on Racing Clock, but I guess it is just for flavor. Nevertheless I do not like the fatigue direction. Timetravel Project needs some clarification - do start/end turn triggers and do you jump by 2 Mana? If Start/Ends triggers than it is weird not to have a real at least tiny synergy with it in the set (Wind Up Clockwork does not count, Careful Analyst probably does, though), Talis uses Echo which is Witchwood Keyword, SnipSnap was an exception, but I think of him more like a mini set (like Darkmoon Races), than a part of the Boomsday itself. Talis Legendary Spell is something I absolutely hate, a stable win condition for a Miracle styled deck is terrible idea in my opinion. Maybe giving yourself boost and putting yourself on a clock would be a far greater idea and would also synergize with Wind Up Clockwork and Programmed Obsolence (Putting cards into your deck, lowering the chance to draw fatigue.
And now for my entry:
I'd like to go with Descent of Dragons and the good guys (Sidequests) mechanics:
Windflapper is a standalone buildaround card, that would go ahead of an archetype arriving later, as Seaforium Bomber for Bomb Warrior, or something similar. Maybe I should include 1 more Windfury card?
Impress the Dragons is a first Sidequest. Basicaly card tutor for a single attack.
Ruby Explorer gives away the fact that I had decided to go with red dragonflight as that one was not represented in any class (I wanted Stone Drakes from Stonecore but there is not a single art of them.) and is also part of a explorer - only cycle.
Showdown Preparation - Not sure about this one, maybe it should just draw a spell and be a build around?
Ruby Breath - all class cycle card, inspired by the original Alex with Health setting.
Dwarven Dragonrider - Not sure which version and the Dragon tag, maybe this should be the card to swap with Windfury support?
Calm Your Forces - Second sidequest, i originaly wanted the quest to require skipping with 3 Rush minions the turn you played them but that was too wordy. Maybe I could swap the rarity of this with Windflapper as epics tends to be heralds of new mechanics and weird buildaround cards?
Momentary Respite - Wording borrowed from Flightmaster Belnara from Dalaran Heist, maybe should say that both you and Sky'ree become Immune untill your next turn (less flavor, but more clear wording)?
Falstad - One of the most known Gryphon Riders and only dwarf to be called friend of dragons for helping to free Alexstrasza. Lore-wise seems to be a perfect fit.
Korialstrasz - For the second, dragon, legendary I wanted to go with different dragon than Alex, so I went with the second most important one. Not sure which version. The fist one depicts him changing form and his allegiance to Dalaran (with Spell Damage). The second one plays more with the original Alex Flavor and serves as the pseudo-Healing for the class that lacks it, not sure if it should be one time effect, that would reset when you play him or not.
Feedback is welcomed, I am still not sure if I am good to go with these 10 cards, or I am supposed to include more, like the miniset?
