I've been playing a variant of Kibler's Midrange Lyra priest for a bit and have found it to be a really solid deck. Through the course of playing the deck I've noticed that from time to time I'm faced with the choice of picking Malygos from my Ambers to great effect because it synergizes with both nova and dragonfire potion for INSANE clears against jade archetypes. My opponents seem to disregard the card because, on average it either inconveniences them to deal with it or they think that priest can't utilize its spell damage.
I know malygos typically isn't played because it's such a heavy card but I thought I would mention it to see what people thought about the possibility.
Well there are 5 cards worth using in combination. Smite, mindblast, Nova, dragonfire and holy fire. Only smite works in the same round AND gets good value out of malygos. Velen would be the better choice for all the other spells since it also doubles your healing. I sometimes choose malygos out of ember. But only because he is a dragon which is good when clearing with dragon fire. And because of his high health vs garrosh with sulfuras.
Tl;dr
i think he is not worth a spot. And I would prefer velen but even he isn't worth a spot.
Malygos is generally strong in decks with cheap spells that can be used for damage. While Priest has a few of those, it's pretty lofty to try and build a deck around the idea that you can finish your opponent off using a bunch of randomly generated spells from Lyra. However, there is an argument for creating a Lyra variant with a dragon shell that also plays Malygos. Maybe you play double Holy Smite as well? Possibly a Prophet Velen inclusion? The amazing thing about the deck is that there are so many different ways to try and play the deck. Future experimentation will hold key if Priest will sink or swim in Un'Goro.
You could try a deck with only malygos velen and Barnes and mirage. A velen and a malygos on board brings you a 14 damage smite. (First spellpower then the double effect of velen. I tried it with mindblast a few years ago. Mindblast with velen is 10 and with one spellpower it's 12).
Standard is too fast to play OTK Malygos deck rn, so it's better to run this in Wild while including Emperor Thaurassion, Prophet Velen, Mirage Caller, and Malygos.

not on ladder of course but for the lols
Could try it with a very small spell package. Shadow Visions, Mind Blasts, Smites would ensure always getting a Mind Blast or Smite. Mulligan for Shadow Visions. Then it's a matter of staying alive and pulling draw (and hoping to get Velen+Mirage Caller or Maly to sit on the board for a round). Seems highly unpractical but a good lolz deck when you do. Could just use a ton of taunts and parts of the silence package without running silences other than battlecries to help get rid of your opponents hard removals before the big show.

I do think Malygos has historically been underrated. Having said that, I think it's hard to justify running Malygos over Ysera in a lot of situations.

It is situational. But unless you build at least part of the deck around it, it will be a dead card most of the time.
As Amber choice, it is perfectly ok.

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition... er, Malygos.
