Gnomeferatu makes Warlock milling possible for the first time in the game's history. Wisely, all the complimentary tools are in wild.
The plan is fairly direct - play minions that pull cards from the opponent's deck (Dancing Swords, Deathlord, Coldlight Oracle), forcing them to commit to the board, and then punish with the numerous AOE's.
I have considered Dirty Rat as well, but that creates negative synergy for the brutal Brann Bronzebeard/Coldlight Oracle turns we are all so familiar with in Rogue. And while Demonwrath is a great card for this archetype, Hellfire is better against all the 3-health minions in Token Druid and Pirate Warrior which won't be going anywhere soon. More healing would be nice, but until we get a good Lifesteal card for Warlock (more reveals on the way), double Antique Healbot (available with Brann Bronzebeard) will have to suffice.
Can't wait to try this out.
Aug. 1 update - Who would've guessed that a theorycrafted Warlock mill deck would reach the front page of all decks! Thanks to everyone who's upvoted, and I promise a write-up after I give this thing a spin for a few days after the expansion. Way cool.
Aug. 3 update - Both Treachery and Skulking Geist have now been revealed. I never anticipated this type of attention, so I am hesitant to make piecemeal changes to the list until all cards are known. As I noted in the comments, I actually don't think Treachery works in this type of build, but Skulking Geist seems like a natural fit at first blush. I will take my best stab at refining the list after the final card dump and post my results after the first day of release. Thoughts on new cards fitting (or not) into this deck are appreciated - for example someone recommended Sir Finley Mrrgglton, and the more I think about it the more I think he's practically necessary. Thanks again for all the support.
Aug. 8 update - The final reveal didn't bring anything I found too useful for this deck. There is zero demon synergy for Bloodreaver Gul'dan despite the amazing hero power. Sir Finley Mrrgglton still seems better. And in light of Skulking Geist, Power Overwhelming no longer makes sense. I dropped a single copy of Shadowflame to make room; it loses serious synergy in PO, and I still like double Twisting Nether to fit this deck's plan of forcing the opponent to commit to the board.
Also, The Lich King doesn't help that plan - it actually risks self-milling by adding cards. But because every other non-aggro deck will be running it from here to forever, the hilarious Army of the Dead and Doom Pact will either cause meme-worthy moments or create utterly dead cards for the opponent. I'm looking forward to that.
I'm going to stick with this list going into the release. As I've mentioned in the comments several times now, I believe Treachery/Fel Reaver shenanigans belong in a completely different deck without Dancing Swords and the like. Someone else can do a better job of figuring that one out.
I'll report back on my results Friday or Saturday depending on how busy work is. Have fun!
I'd add in prince malechezzar to add 5 cards to your deck, and maybe renounce to change your hero power to prevent self cardloss, maybe even jaraxus.
I'd add in 2x couriers to possibly get an archbishop yourself to make yourself millproof
Combos well with Shadowflame for a board clear.
Precisely, and with Sylvanas for an emergency two-card Mind Control.
blizzard will probably (hopefully) add some sort of mechanic that lets you give your opponents minions.
they would probably like to see new control metas, after all they did release Bring It On! Archbishop Benedictus and Ticking Abomination
and giving minions favor control with cards like Doomsayer
but in this scenerio:
it would be insane to give your opponent a Fel Reaver and then cycle through your discounted (Emperor Thaurissan) cards
well, it depends if blizzard ends up adding that mechanic
-
this deck seems really fun though, and it would actually be viable
sir you did it! you predicted Treachery. looking forward to this madness
this man asked and blizzard delivered.
oh boi, 5 upvotes? i feel famous, thanks.
when i made the prediction, i, deep inside, hoped Treachery would be a neutral card, but warlock does need this boost as hearthstone's current worst class
well, the deck creator now faces the problem of figuring out exactly what is worth and isn't worth keeping
Treachery and Fel Reaver are now definite parts of the deck but treachery is at an unreasonably high mana cost, since in most cases, giving minions is usually disadvantageous, with the exception of Emerald Hive Queen, Doomsayer, Ticking Abomination, and a few others, giving your opponent a minion is a similar mechanic to Dirty Rat or Cornered Sentry
but im not blizzard so i can't change card costs :^(
well here's my take on card replacements
keep in mind this is control warlock with a twist
-1xHellfire -1xShadowflame -1xSiphon Soul -1xSludge Belcher
+2xFel Reaver +2xTreachery
this is part of a neccessary change, since with the addition of Treachery, Fel Reaver can already mill the top 3 cards of your opponents deck by playing cards, which is significantly better than trying to get your opponent to draw 10 cards and then try to mill them by drawing more
the explaination behind my choices are that the deck has enough removal and heal to survive until late game, and by then, you have full access to twisting nether
like rogues did in the past (before Vilespine Slayer), they always ran 1xAssassinate, hard removal is important, but big minions will only be played later on, unless its ramp druid, so you should be able to survive on only 1 Siphon Soul
there's already 7 deathrattles, so cutting Sludge Belcher won't affect N'Zoth, the Corruptor that much but you are losing a taunt, which is big
keep in mind that these are the best choices to remove, replacing any other card in the deck will probably end up straying from the main point, which is milling your opponent
now time for the important, but not essential additions (they can make a huge impact but compete very harshly for a place in the deck)
Summoning Portal and Faceless Manipulators are definite biggies for this deck
Emperor Thaurissan's card text is basically battlecry: reduce the cost of cards in your hand by (1), by the end of your opponents turn destroy the minion
lets be honest, when i started, which is right before the release of GvG, Emperor Thaurissan is the world's scariest card, it was either you remove it or you automatically lose
in our meta, with so much removal, Emperor Thaurissan is sure to die, so to prevent that, Summoning Portal and Faceless Manipulator can either assist in pulling of minion based combos (cost reduced Summoning Portal into Brann Bronzebeard then Coldlight Oracle or cost reduced Summoning Portal into cost reduced Fel Reaver then start cycling) or just help add extra Emperor Thaurissan to the board
another important pick is Doomsayer, since it is a guarentee board clear with Treachery
in the end, through all my years of playing this game, i've almost never touched warlock so my suggests may be terrible
well, i am sleep deprived so i may be suggesting really dumb replacements, but as of right now, all i can say is that this deck would probably benifit from the addition of Fel Reaver, Treachery, Doomsayer, and Faceless Manipulator
2 major mechanics can also reshape this deck IF they do get released, but unlike my confidence when predicting Treachery, i highly doubt warlock will be getting this mechanic added into the class
if warrior recieves a board bounce like Vanish, then thats an important addition
the second mechanic that warlock will benefit from are cards similar to Shadowcaster, which is way better than Faceless Manipulator or Summoning Portal
any card that generates copies will be big for warlock, but since warlock doesn't have any class cards that do that, warlock has to rely on neutral cards, which are usually really weak in terms of copy generation
It'd be really fun to see this build of the deck if you get around to it.
Jade Idol says hello.
if you burn their jade idols before they can draw them they might have a problem
And if you can't burn them? gg
oh no, the deck is countered by one card, how will it ever be playable? Also, if you get to the point where all that'S left in their deck is idols and you still have Gnomeferatu + Brann combo they might be in for a surprise
Just goes to show that theorycrafting before all cards are revealed is pointless.
I would add Jaraxxus for late game consistency
As a mill deck, it seems like you'll be wanting to tap as little as possible... Maybe sub in Sir Finley and hope for something more control-oriented?
Nice idea! Healing from him would really help too. Not sure what I'd drop though, maybe Thaurrisan? It would be tough to give up the wombo-combos he can put together (if only for the memes), and everything else seems pretty critical. Maybe a single Belcher?
Take out PO or a Twisting Nether for a Finley
I think -1 Twisting Nether +1 Finley will be my first sub, but I will be trying my initial list first when the expansion hits.
I approve
