It depends mostly on how you define 'bad player'. Several of my friends play hearthstone and out of our group of 5, I am the only one who reached legend. Of the other 4, 3 are definitely not great players and will never ever reach legend and probably not even Diamond 5. One of them could possibly reach it if he played more. So is the one who never reached it a good player (because he is definitely better than the other 3) or a bad player because he never reached legend? I.e. tons of players never even try because they are nowhere good enough. How many? No idea - a fair lot I'd say, but not the type of folks that come to sites like this.
So let's say you are in the group of 'serious' players and that you can reach D5 every month, yet never reached legend despite trying a few times. Is it because you don't play enough or because you don't play well enough? Well, there is a great simulator here that can help you answer this: https://www.primedope.com/number-of-games-to-reach-legend-in-hearthstone/ . It calculates the number of people reaching legend based of bonus stars, win rate, and games played. Let's assume 9 bonus stars for D5.
If you'd have a 30% chance of reaching legend, then you'd be very unlucky not to reach it after about 5 attempts. So let's look at the winrates and games played required to reach this 30% chance.
If you play...
90 games per month (= 3 games per day), you'd need a 65% winrate to have a 34% chance of reaching legend
150 games per month (= 5 games per day), you'd need a 55% winrate to have a 28% chance of reaching legend
8 games per day, you'd need a 50% winrate to have a 28% chance of reaching legend
10 games per day, you'd need a 49% winrate to have a 34% chance of reaching legend
15 games per day, you'd need a 46% winrate to have a 28% chance of reaching legend
20 games per day, you'd need a 45% winrate to have a 31% chance of reaching legend
So,
If you just play 3 games per day, then even if you are an amazing player (60% win rate), you most likely won't make it. You simply don't play enough and the solution is to play more.
If you play 8 games per day, your winrate in the 'group of try-hards' is probably below 50%. Whether or not that makes you a bad player is up to you to decide. But in that group, it looks like you are in the bottom half.
If you play 15 games per day, your winrate in the 'group of try-hards' is probably 45% or less. Again, whether or not that makes you a bad player is up to you to decide, but it looks like you won't ever reach legend no matter how hard you try.
I would define a "good player" as someone who is able to creatively use the cards in their own combinations and achieve success without relying on other people's lists. It takes a different kind of skill to be able to come up with your own ideas and use them rather than just copy other people.
I only hit legend a few months ago having played the game for years but I would not describe myself as a good player necessarily as I make plenty of suboptimal plays. I would also say there are plenty of people who I would describe as good players who have never pushed for legend because they don't have the time or interest in doing so.
I think one way of looking at it is how good your winrate is. I would guess good players consistently get a winrate a few percentage points above average with a specific deck. This would also mean they hit legend more quickly. If you're performing as expected with a particular deck then you are a competent or average player.
This post has no mening, you might don't have much time to invest in the game so this is the reason why you haven't reached legend yet.
You are a bad player if even you use meta decks you can't really progress on the ladder, but then again it's not hard to understand a deck and how to play it.
Anyway with the new system it's way faster and easier to get to legend that it used to be.
As for how much I play, it differs but it's like 2-3 games every game or every two-three days. It used to be more in the past, maybe 10 games a day, but I don't find the game AS fun nowadays, even if I find it fun.
Play the right deck at the right time. I got legend 4 months on the bounce with druid glowfly deck and haven't really crafted a T1 deck since and struggle to get above rank 3. Have my plays degraded. I don't think so. Am I playing the wrong decks... Most probably. Do I care...no
back in the day reaching legend meant something now it's just same deck netdecked by different players one after the other
This doesn't address the OP other than maybe being interpreted as you insinuating that they are a bad player. If that's not what you mean then why hijack their thread to have a moan about the system? That's not what they asked.
To the OP no, it doesn't. It may mean you're too casual or not good enough to hit it easily but those are not the same thing as being a 'bad' player. Just because a footballer doesn't play in the Premier League, they play in the Championship, it doesn't make them a 'bad' player. They are just at their level. I have bit legend but 10 months a year I know I won't play enough to get there every month and I'm not good enough to do say a 40 and 8 streak or something and get there straight away. I do need to spend a bit of time bouncing around ranks 1 - 3 ish until I hit a decent run.
I've played HS since the beta, so 6 years or so. I have never managed to reach Legend. Does that mean I'm a bad player? It feels like everyone who discusses HS online has managed to reach Legend at least once.
The closest I've been was like rank 2 in the rank system before this revamped one.
Same here.
I reached rank 1 3 stars and then felt :( The issue btw is time. Diamonds ranks are grind fiesta
I dont think so, obviously you need to have some skills but not for dont reaching it you are bad. I took nearly 2 years to reach legend.
What (imo) really demostrates you are not so good is when you need to use the legend card back to probe you reached it :).
After taking a hiatus from the game, sometimes I'll come back and "flex" my legend card back. My real motive, though, is to give my opponent a slight ego boost to make him think he beat someone good haha. It ain't much, but it's honest work =P. Gotta spread positivity somehow.

Wait a minute, are there people who are still intimidated by the Legend card back in 2020 ?
And as for OP.. Legend isn't a grind for a good player. It IS a grind if you're a slightly above average player but in reality you don't need to be good to reach it.
However, you need to be good to consistently reach it every month & achieve high Legend.
I'm always toggeling between rank 1 and 5. Once I got rank 1 full stars twice in 1 month but everytime fell back. Very frustrating to know you only needed 1 more win.
Not necessarily, I have reached Legend once because I put my mind to it and I wanted to get it done at least one time, and it definitely wasn’t pleasant as every loss is headache when you play HS in a competitive manner ( especially losing to RNG) but if you’re a casual player its completely normal

If you play...
So,
It's a good sign that you have a healthy relationship with the game.
Should everyone reach legend ?
I dont't think.
I mostly enjoy crafting new decks, theorycrafting and discovering new combos, combinations.
At the end, try to enjoy game.

No, it just means you aren't playing as much as legend players.
Play the right deck at the right time. I got legend 4 months on the bounce with druid glowfly deck and haven't really crafted a T1 deck since and struggle to get above rank 3. Have my plays degraded. I don't think so. Am I playing the wrong decks... Most probably. Do I care...no

I'm in the same boat. I just like playing my own fun decks that aren't legend worthy.
I'm always toggeling between rank 1 and 5. Once I got rank 1 full stars twice in 1 month but everytime fell back. Very frustrating to know you only needed 1 more win.
This is purely based on the types of decks you play and the amount of time you play them.
If you play day in day out with the "best" decks. You should've reached legend in 6 years.
However, if you don't spend that much time in the game. Or you spend more time having fun and not actually trying to hit legend, it's completely fine.
