Another interesting application for the battlecry is with Deck of Lunacy as you can also copy some nice high cost nature/holy spells like Cenarion Ward, Libram of Hope, etc.
It would be a 1 mana with stats equal to the cost of the spells drawn. The only question is whether the spells drawn will cost 5 or 1, depending on whether the cost switch happens before or after the 1/1 illusion "buff".
Against the heavy attack groups (wildkins), my general plan is to: Cenarion Surge, Living Brambles, Lightning Bolt to focus down an enemy on Turn 1. Then Muddy Footing, Entangling Roots (to disable a big attacker), Living Brambles on Turn 2. Occasionally one of my mercs will get instagibbed by windfury, but then again that's what those Spirit Healer tiles are for. This doesn't normally happen more than once in a run.
I must say I tried some packs just now with both nature comp and Lich King/Varden and Lich King makes it waaayyy easier, especially if you can get some free turns with Cold Snap. Maybe Xyrella could also be useful for mitigating those windfury attacks and wolf mangles?
Yeah Lich King was my legendary from the first 10 packs...he's pretty decent. Brightwing is a decent budget alternative to Malfurion as he can also trigger Guff's Brambles while Bru'kan charges up. Pixie Dust is a reasonable healing option in PVE.
Lich King worked well for me initially. Frost shield means you can freeze against the extra attacks from windfury and the enraged wildkins attacks.
I think the nature damage nuke is a better option though, but really need Malfurion for the passive healing and to outspeed those fast attackers with Entangling Roots (once its been sped up by Cenarion Surge).
I've finally managed to clear all runs on heroic and sometimes it is a case of just being lucky with treasures. For example, Ahune the Frost Lord on heroic becomes trivial once you get the Hunting Party that insta-kills summoned minions. (That one also helps with Snowclaw heroic which I think is the hardest in Winterspring).
The setup that I've used that can reliably clear heroics is Malf/Bru'kan/Guff. I've been using Cairne/Anacondra (Improved Mend Pet) and a placeholder on the bench. Malfurion's Task 7 equipment makes things a lot easier to farm (was glad I got it before the nerf).
I just got offered this along with the Holy Shock ability for Natalie (Deal holy damage and repeat for all holy spells cast this game). So if you manage to get both this and the holy spell damage passive then they can be used together! Very rare use but it IS usable!!!
I think you're right. Maybe the programmers made it so that treasure has a chance of appearing for all mercs with two holy spells. I'm pretty sure I've never seen it appear for Cariel.

I think it's decent enough to include in any deck running Mask of C'Thun.

I'm wondering if Reckless Apprentice will freeze all the targets without consuming the charge.

Potion of Illusion with her to play a 1 mana, overstatted minion and draw two 1-cost big spells!

Maybe into Mr. Smite for more tempo?

Cast is the past tense of cast. "Casted" is incorrect.
"I cast a spell" could be referring to either an action in the present or the past.

Also Mannoroth's Howl of Terror shouldn't be underestimated against heavy attack damage setups.

Isn't the passive holy spell damage a passive?
Maybe I'm being dumb - I thought you could have a passive ability and an active ability xD
