Hearthstone has a lot of decks. This much is true. But one thing that Hearthstone employs in abundance (now more than ever), is the use of randomisation and unexpected outcomes. These tend to mean that the final outcome of the game can often be more heavily based on a user's actual luck than a test of their skill (in varying degrees).
So to try something new, "I want to play a game...". :-)
The Concept
If you are interested, here is the idea: What is the best deck that you can come up with (in current Standard format) that uses only cards that actually require decision-driven and skill-based mechanics, with no random outcomes whatsover?
The Rules
So, to be clear, any cards that feature the following are NOT allowed in your deck: (This includes text on cards, or hero powers, or generated effects (like Dr Boom, etc))
- The word Random or Randomly - The keyword Discover - The keyword Lackey - Summon cards that do not specify exactly what they summon. For example: Anyfin Can Happen is notallowed. Cairne Bloodhoofis allowed.
The following are card types that ARE allowed:
- Choose effect cards that do not contain any of the above restrictions - Card draw that doesn't discover or require any form of unexpected result
Your deck should require you to have absolute control over every option and decision in your game (barring your opponent's, of course which you have little control over).
Competition Time?
And if we get a good few deck ideas, and people are interested, I may even arrange a little mini tournament to see who gets the Best Skill-Based Deck Player crown! Ahem! :-)
I'll post this here just to garner a little attention / discussion first and then move it to the Deck Creation thread later. If I have overlooked anything glaringly obvious or there is a rule contradiction etc, please let me know and I will update.
Skill-based means that the deck relies completely on decisions made by you as a player, rather than random events giving you unexpected boosts or screwing over the opponent. It doesn't matter if you are playing on curve or not.
That may be the default Priest deck, sure, but there's nothing wrong with it in the terms of skill, or the challenge set. You still have to know when to play things, whether to trade, whether to play on curve or play non-curve minions for whatever reason, etc.
this is some next level salty thread hidden under the subterfuge of skill. HS has long since dropped skill. u want a skilled deck, then go to Wild and play Dead Mans Hand Warrior Mill deck. thats skill my friend, the rest is just random young adults and youngsters trying to discuss dick sizes.
You will play Dead Mans Hand Warrior and that will be the end of it.
I would argue that it takes far more skill to analyze the possible random outcomes and consider them in one's strategy. In fact, if there were no random outcomes in Hearthstone, the game would end up requiring a lot less critical thought overall.
A better name for this competition would be No-Rando.

This is not a salt thread, nor is it intended to be a discussion on the nature of what this, that or the other player happens to think a skill-based deck truly is. Lol.
If you're not interested in joining in having fun with others, nobody is forcing you. :-)
I would hate to say this is the most skilled deck, but Token Druid with a replacement for Cable Rat will be VERY competitive and has no random cards....
It's an aggro Murloc deck :D no random effects just straight up aggro :D I hope this counts
and because I had fun thinking about it, the complete opposite :D a wild random deck (only 2 cards contain no randomness but keep the flow of the deck I guess AAEBAY0WAA/DAbQE5gTjEYsUuxaSrAKYxALHxwKc0wKg0wL77ALC8wKmmAP/nQMA ( Manacyclone would be really good possible but I don't wanna relate myself to that mess of a card :D )

Good job, man! :-) I'm tempted to give the all-random Wild one a go too actually! :-)
I like the idea of this thread :3 and don't understand why people got so mad about it in the first place :D I would love to fight in that tourney and would work on more decks for that :D
I think some people felt triggered by the idea that a deck migth require skill in Hearthstone. Lol *shrugz*
:-D
No, I'm triggered when people assert or imply that randomness and skill cannot coexist. It's an illogical position to take, and it's harmful to the game and the community.
It was your choice to use loaded, misleading words to describe your thread. Don't expect that no one will call you on it.
Hmm, I don't think that's what I said, nor implied. And there was no offense intended there.
But no matter. The point is that the intention of this post was to provide something fun and enjoyable for members to take part in. It's a shame that not everyone was able (or in some cases willing) to do that, hence why I left the post here and moved on.
I'll continue to monitor the thread for the benefit of those who enjoyed the game idea.
Just because a deck doesn't have random effects doesn't mean it's purely skill. It only means there are significantly less decisions to be made. Luck in drawing cards could still make or break a game. Cards games are inherently influenced by luck/randomness because of the draw mechanic.

Nice one - I will give this deck a try tonight. :-)
Isn't this literally just the default basic Priest deck? Playing a River Crocolisk on curve isn't really "skill-based" in my opinion.
Skill-based means that the deck relies completely on decisions made by you as a player, rather than random events giving you unexpected boosts or screwing over the opponent. It doesn't matter if you are playing on curve or not.

How is it fun to play a basic Priest deck and get steamrolled by anyone who has been playing longer than a week?
