easy, they had played wild for over one year and people like new shiny things plus we already had half the cards for standard when it got released (LOE, TGT and BRM) so we didn't have to grind, expect a lot more people to play wild during the next rotation.
Well I've thought about it a bit, and the biggest reason I can come up with is Mad Scientist.
That's the funny thing about Wild, everything feels so broken that you dont even get upset anymore, Implosion, Mad Scientist, Dr. Boom, Dr. 6, Dr. 2, the list goes on and on....
And as a by-product of this, new players also don't have to obtain (or know) a selection of cards ranging from the most recent adventure/expansion all the way back to the first one(s).
Imagine yourself starting to play hearthstone now.
its very difficult to get all cards. i am a f2p player and just manage to get the new release. With time going by you dont need to get all old cards, so its manageable to catch up to players who are collecting cards longer than you.

Standard is the official and supported format. Tournament points are awarded in standard, not Wild. Even though that only matters to a small percentage of players, allot of people will feel like it matters more. It's also what everyone sees on streams etc. Also allot of people are happy to not have to deal with Mysterious Challengers, Sludge Belchers, Mad Scientists, or Dr Booms..
This
But the longer the game exists, the more interesting it will be which deck is the most broken in wild (as the devs don't care about that mode when creating new cards)
Because there's not enough variety between Wild and Standard as of yet.
Which is also the primary reason why there's no big Wild tournaments ... yet, beside the Unofficially Blizzard Tournament in China.
This has been stated for a very long time now and the basis of all of this is Magic the Gathering. Look at how long it took before Modern became as big as it is now and look and compare a standard rotation and a modern rotation and you'll see just how much/little decks change. Standard is where new innovative deckbuilding happens, Wild is where you'll face the most brutal decks that has ever been created.
Folks complaining about Secret Paladin? Pft! I laugh at how easy it is to beat that deck compared to the dread of what's going to become Wild come a few rotations!
There's a lot of variety when you compare Wild and Standard, standard is boring, shamanstone at its core while Wild has a lot of different decks and it feels like rock, paper and scissors! you cant just go rampant with secret paladin without a PRIEST ruining your day nor you can go rampant with a priest cuz a patron warrior will put you in check, and the list goes on.
And btw i dont think wild will be worse once the rotation hits, midrange shaman aint nothing in wild these days and that's not going to change.

Patron Warrior is really bad example. It's board-centric deck and priest keeps those in check. Freeze Mage keeps Priest in check, because it's noninteractive match-up and Freeze Mage goldfishes faster.

If standard was created so that new players would have an easier time, why do most people play standard instead of wild?
"Standard format aims to create a fresher Hearthstone experience." People don't want a stale meta... except when they do and thats why there is wild.

standard is the format made for both new and competitive players and since wild doenst get any support by Blizzard, most people stick to standard
