Hey everyone, I saw the poll for Astromancer and that a lot of people are thinking it will be good. I didn't want something like this to get lost in that thread, so maybe just consider these numbers before you decide on that card.
A few things to note - I didn't exclude Can't Attack Minions so the lower mana numbers may be a bit inflated as a result, but I did make The Darkness a 0/0 since it is dormant off of this effect. Also realize that you can't summon a 10 cost from Astromancer (at least I don't think), but I included it to show what made Spiteful Summoner so good. Lastly this doesn't include any cards from the new set yet, but from past experience with these kind of exercises - that doesn't change the averages too drastically
Use these numbers as you will, but frankly I look at this and think it is a garbage card since you'd need 7 cards in hand when you play it just to get 2 - 5/5s (on average)
The reason the card is exciting and definitely playable is not because of stats alone. Many cards at lower stat ranges have more powerful deathrattles, EOT effects, or keywords that make their mana cost worth it. Tirion Fordring is an 8 mana 6/6 when it's text is removed, for instance. Astromancer has me so hyped, already have a shell for it...
Nice analysis. But to be fair this will be played in a hand-mage deck specifically. Where 7 cards in hand is not that extreme. And a 7 mana 10/11, over two bodies, worth of stats is pretty good. Not meta breaking, but above tempo.

You'd need 9 cards in had to get powerful Legendary minions like The Lich King and Tirion Fordring just right off the bat that is 2 of 26... Lets say we want an 8 mana minion in general since that is where the best effects are. Charged Devilsaur, Rotface or Grommash Hellscream with the mage ping, or maybe Grand Archivist in big mage. Now that is 6 of 26 or just ~25% another ~25% is garbage and about 50% is the average result... idk it just doesn't seem consistent enough to make a good card... Especially because you need that many cards in had in the first place
There is a possibility to summon a 10 mana minion with Astromancer though. By having Stargazer Luna on the board, you have 9 cards in your hand and you just drew Astromancer from your deck. Just my opinion, not that anyone can pull it off every time they want, and it’s incredibly slow either
Interesting. Although minions are more than a pile of stats: Charged Devilsaur is a way better summon than War Golem, despite having the same stats.
Another thing to consider is that average doesn't tell the whole story, the spread also matters. For example Lynessa Sunsorrow pulls down the average 7-mana stats quite a bit, but does the average give that one card too much weight or does the fact that you can low-roll so spectacularly make the summoning worse than the average might suggest?
Still, these numbers do show that for Astromancer to be good, you need a consistently large hand size on turn 7. While there are plenty of card creation cards, I'm not sure how many of those you could put in a deck without getting stomped by every aggro and mid-range deck. That was the problem of Burgle Rogue before Spectral Cutlass: plenty of value, but you often died before you could take advantage of it.

Edit: MAYBE a one of in big mage
No need to have more than 1 or 2 digits. Come on now, this is important to know for your life.
Lol not gonna lie that was just laziness... Idk why but I hate having to adjust cell formatting

I love this card
but pulling Lynessa hurts my bones
also worth considering is that it is impossible (?) to pull a 10-mana minion from this card
