Hi guys, thought i would do a write up as this deck i made has been getting some interest. A little info about me as a hearthstone player - I am a multiple time legend player, but i have recently stopped grinding to legend as i do not enjoy the state of the game.
I play classes that I have still yet to golden as my progression whilst hitting rank 5 every month. This was the first deck i tried after Karazhan - and i do believe it sits well in the meta, it feels good to play and i have a great winrate this season.
I managed to hit 5 with ease before stopping playing - every opponent expects resurrect priest on ladder and it catches them offguard when i start playing my overstated 1, 2 and 3 drops.
The deck works well as it is the most pre-active deck you can play with priest. it does have re-active cards like any other priest deck, but they come after you have seized the board as a way to maintain board control. Without board this deck loses - so you have to mulligan hard for your 1 and 2 drops.
I will talk about some of the card choices. I originally had medivh as a late game drop, although it did win games and feels good to play (when you are ahead or on an empty board) it is very much a win more card. I cut it for Ragnaros the firelord as it is a great re-active and pro-active card that does not need to be held in hand.
I decided to not include Brann - although he brings the deck great value, I already have enough cards in my hand that are re-active. His greatest benefit comes from using him with historian in control matchups - but i find that i received more than enough value using historian by itself in the few control matchups i faced. I originally had him in with 1 blackwing technician, but i decided to cut him. With 2 entombs, ysera and 2 historians i have everything i need against control.
I have seen people comment on why i do not have 2 bookworms - my reasoning is that once again it is a re-active card, and i already have 2 re-active 6 mana cards. It is a fantastic card but I only feel the need for one - which leads me onto the next card i want to talk about.
I dont actually have it in the list but i have been testing taking out 1 entomb for the good old cabal shadow priest. This is the reason i would not run 2 book worms in this deck.I thought about it and i realized that the majority of targets i had been killing with bookworm - i could be stealing for the same mana and a more intimidating body. I kept thinking - what great value the book worm gives, but i could be getting even more stealing that minion. I am still going back and forth between 2 x entomb and 1 x entomb, 1 x cabal.
The deck must be played with tempo in mind early turns. Always make value trades and fight for board control at all times. You win with this deck by out valuing your opponents and then controlling the board with your reactive cards once you have a board. When you have board contol - it is good to go for aggressive dragons from netherspite to put pressure on the opponent.
Thanks for the interest in my deck - i will add to the write up and include mulligans in the coming days when i have a bit more free time
I'd love to use 2x Brann too.
is it a joke? am i missing anything? :)
Any replacements for Twilight Guardian?
Wyrmrest Agent?
It's already in the deck...
Turn 7 still no dragon nice
Fun deck, but sheesh, talk about bad rng this game.
Hey you need a dragon. ;)
I feel ya bro. It sucks when you get all the cards for a good curve except you don't have a dragon to trigger them.
What cards would i replace and why.
-1 northsshire cleric. Card isnt good against aggro anymore and you already have 4 cycle cards + 2 discover cards.
-1 priest of the feast. The card is supposed to be good in deck with a lot of cheap spells. This one doesnt have them so it doesnt fit the archetype.
-1 entomb. Meta is full of aggro and tempo. 1 entomb and 2 deaths are definately enough. As dragon priest you actually want to play some cards aswell not wait until your opponent put sth on a board.
-1 ysera. Card is too slow in current meta and often times when you actually find a time to play it she dies in one turn giving you too low value for the cost. Whats more netherspite historian almost always lets you discover legendary dragon.
-1 medivh. 6 spells (my version) arent enough + you would actually have to save some spells for later for this card to be even OK + as priest you will probably lack tempo in early stages of the game so you definately dont want to loose it later on. Whats more netherspite historian almost always lets you discover legendary dragon.
+1 pain. There are so many important minions in curent meta that nned to die ASAP that i think 1 copy is not enough.
+2 twilight drakes. Good synergy with power word shield and netherspite historian. Most of the time youll be playing it as 4/6 on turn 4 which is better than any minion you can put as priest in place of a four drop + its a dragon.
+1 brann. Battlecries are all over the place. Great synergy with twilight drake and netherspite historian aswell as with azure drake.
+1 ragnaros. Card is one of the best legendaries in a game and fits most deck archetypes. Allow priets to actually have some burst damage, its a 8 drop which replace medivh, wins many games by itself.
If you like the changes I made check out my control dragon paladin and give a feedback if you please :)
This is more or less my thoughts.
But I like to play double cleric, because then it's easier to draw one from your deck. It has good synergy with Holy nova you can draw lots of cards and I want mostly to find my removals which gives me lots of options and tempo. Minions in general not so big issue for Dragon Priest that's why I think it's possible to play even one Netherspite Historian.
I think the point with cleric on the first move to see can you protect him with your next moves with taunt 2 4, SWP or PW:S. If not then better not to play it. Otherwise your opponent plays something like 3 2 second drop and kills it for free.
About forth drop for Priest: I like to play one copy of Shifting Shade. Even if you are not playing N'Zoth it still gives you card from your opponents deck. And 4 3 minion you can trade with your opponent card like 1 to 1.
But twillight drake has some point as well, because first of all it's a dragon and more synergy with a brann later.
I agree with these changes 100%. I'm playing it now (except I added Shadow Madness aswell) and I'm on a nice win streak. Such a fun deck that seems to be working surprisingly well. Lets see how high I get.
I agree with you so much I wish I could express it with more than just an upvote.
Malchezaar belgongs to decks which cycle a lot. So no its not good.
I would think if you are looking to know what you might draw, with an emphasis on having/ getting Dragons in your hand for synergy, five additional , random minions (even legondaries) might reduce the strength of this deck...
Replacement for Chillmaw?
Hard to replace Chillmaw for dragon decks. He is very beneficial to wipe the board.
chillmaw not necessary. It only function as anti aggro tech. If u ahead chillmaw get zero value, just a bad card 7 mana with 6-6 body. You also potential destroy own minion when you control the boards. Always end up dead card in hand.
You can probably pull Chillmaw from Netherspite Historian. Especially if you combo it with Brann. I've pulled 3 Chillmaws before in a single game. Really pissed off the opposing player too haha...
So to answer your question I'd put Brann in here.
Just ask yourself how many 3 health drops you see by turn 7. I tried this card many times in various of dragon or nzoth decks and my opinion about this card is that there are better replacements and card itself barely ever put you ahead.
Consecration is good for dealing 3 damage.
