Crazy this 1984 crap is happening in 2017. In a country that contains 1/6 of the world's population.
This won't affect me in any way, but it pisses me off.
You guys are either incredibly naive or entitled. There is no inherent human right to free access of a network of computers around the world, any more than there should be a right to have my favorite cereal every morning. Many many MANY countries restrict access to certain parts of the web (look up internet decency restrictions in your favorite democracies in India, S Korea, even the U.K.). China gets an incredible amount of flak for this just because they are "communist" (by the way they are basically state directed capitalist / hypermercantilist) and not democratic (which people brainwashed on western education blindly worship as the best form of govt in the universe), when in reality they are nowhere near the only ones to put up Internet restrictions.
I agree that everyone in the world does it to some extent but it does not prove China right. I live in Turkey. I also highly disagree that easy access to internet is not a human right. Eastern regions of Turkey mostly consist of Kurdish people and they mostly support Left Wing. Fall of 2016, while i was visiting my family at the Eastern region of Turkey, government arrested couple Mayors of mostly Kurdish populated cities and replaced them with their own men overnight. That night, in the eastern cities, our access to the internet was blocked. Something was happening, there were people shouting in the streets, distant gun-fire sounds but no word on what's going on. It was fucking TERRIFYING. I had no stake at that fight, i stood home but still. I'm a lawyer myself and it should not be that easy to ban the access. Later on government had the habit of blocking the internet whenever a small event happens. Imagine knowing something is happening in your city but not knowing what.
I do realize that blocking twitch is not same thing as disabling the whole thing but it's a smaller step in the same direction. We should not allow government control internet. We need to react before it's too damn late. I'm "slightly" off topic here but i had to tell. Sorry y'all

If you are interested, I'd suggest googling "human rights, internet access." As you correctly suggest, there is slightly more substance to the issue than to simply dismiss the entire matter as being "naive and entitled to think access is an inherent right". It is, and has been recognized as a protected right internationally since 2003, fundamental to freedom of expression and opinion, and freedom of assembly. As the OP blithely suggests, there isn't an internationally recognized right to freedom of cereal, though the relevancy of this observation isn't exactly obvious.

Didn't mean to start a political debate in the realm of cardplaying fantasy warfare, but I believe excambria misses the point. As someone else noted, it's the freedom of expression and flow of ideas, not the mere medium of the internet, that is stifled by the Chinese government. And I'll be damned if that's not a recognized human right in the civilized planet.
And impressive story, Leffe. I'm also a lawyer and I've never taken our U.S. First Amendment lightly.

I live in China as well. Using a VPN works. The government of China is not a "state directed capitalist / hypermercantilist" It is an authoritarian one party state with many state-owned enterprises driving the economy.
Also can confirm newest version of freegate works.
I've asked several friends living in different provinces of China. Freegate works all time for some of them, works sometimes for others, and never works for the rest. Also, in some provinces (Shanghai for instance) people have direct access to Twitch even without VPN.
And btw, I found a new VPN now and I've merged my account successfully. Thanks to everyone who helped.

That sucks, man. Is it even legal to try to bypass the block?
Personally I have no interest in getting a Twitch account as it's not a service I use, so I guess I'll just let my account here die.
Double the trouble
Maybe China found out that US government is secretly stealing all the codes, locations and information through Chinese streams?
Question everything.
