We're looking to add a few new volunteers to our moderation team to help combat spam, keep the forums in-line with our posting rules, and to be the best like no one ever was. It's been a while since we've opened up applications like this, so please read this entire post to make sure you understand what we're trying to accomplish here.
Moderator Responsibilities
Your responsibilities as a moderator on the forums will include:
Maintaining sticky threads containing important information and resources.
Posting on the forums to stay active and to interact with the community. Encourage discussion!
Communicating with the mod team on the staff forums and Slack.
We ask that all our moderators stay in touch with our Slack moderator group. We can be a lot more than just drones who remove spam and hand out warnings ;)
Letting your fellow moderators know about your absences.
Moderator Requirements
We require our moderators:
Have a HearthPwn account in excellent standing.
Be active on the website and continue to be active.
To be active on our web-based chat, Slack. This is an essential part of moderator communications.
To accept the Moderator Code of Conduct (seen below). If you don't agree with this, do not apply.
A Note on Moderator Activity
We understand that you cannot be around 24/7 and we don't expect that of you, we just want you to be active in your duties. If you are currently an active poster on the site, moderating may only add 15 extra minutes to your daily rounds each day.
Please don't apply if you only intend to stick around for a couple of weeks or simply want some forum flair that makes you stand out.
Moderator Code of Conduct
The moderator agrees:
To be respectful of all members, each other, and the administration of HearthPwn.com and to represent the website of HearthPwn.com with professionalism, even though we are all volunteers;
To understand that not all decisions are open for group discussion because input arrives from many sources, some of which require privacy and confidentiality;
To be discreet and to maintain confidentiality regarding moderator forum activities and member information;
To agree to use private emails and private messaging to communicate with the administrative team when questioning administration policy or guidelines or decisions on specific issues;
To resign from moderator duties if there is a breech of confidentiality, if the code of conduct is not followed, or if the rules of HearthPwn or the authority of the administration are not recognized.
Open Positions
The following positions are currently open and accepting applications. Please excuse the formatting of the applications, we don't use this very often and it needs some work ;)
Flux forgot to mention this, but there is a persistent rumour going around that there is free cake for new mods. We cannot officially confirm nor deny that this persistent rumour is true.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
If you see a bad post on the forum use the report function under it, so I or someone else of the moderation team can take care of it!

Good luck to the applicants! I've been a mod in another forum (not game related), and something to consider besides keeping a cool head, always being very civil and neutral and avoiding all public confrontations, is that there are times you find yourself in the awkward position of wanting to take place in a debate or wanting to speak freely, but being unable to do so because everything you say will be recorded & associated with the management of the forum (that's why I'm normally not involved with that anymore).
Just submitted an application guys. If you have any questions or anything, please feel free to message me. I'm on spring break for this week so I'm very available.

Keeping a cool head is definitely a must as a moderator and something I like people to be very aware of. If you're ever having a particularly shitty night, you should let everyone else available deal with reports / tasks on the site so that we can try to be as fair as possible to everyone - it's what the community should expect from our team.
Not being able to participate in discussions that you're really passionate about though due to you not wanting your opinions being reflective of the forum staff? That sounds like those opinions may not be inline with what society as a whole would condone as acceptable which I would say you shouldn't even be posting on your own accord.
Xskarma put it pretty well when we were discussing this - we're a fairly tolerant community where we let people say what they feel as long as you can remain civil and/or constructive when doing so. That includes members of the forum staff.
If a staff member wanted to be critical of Blizzard, go for it, just do it in such a way that is constructive rather than all the "fuck you Blizzard you scum" messages that we see. That's a fairly basic example of it, but it stands to show the way we like to run this community. If a staff member wanted to start "shit posting", it wouldn't be reflective of the staff at all because that person would be gone yesterday.
TL;DR: Mods are allowed to have opinions, but they should remain constructive and civil to show others how they should behave. If you're really passionate about something in a certain way and don't think it's acceptable to post as a staff member, then maybe society as a whole wouldn't find it acceptable and you shouldn't even post it as a non-staff member.
I would like to apply, but I tend to go on sarcastic rants at times. Maybe someday in the future, when I know I've pieced myself together.
Also, I'm not sure how good a standing you need to apply. I only have one minor offence, but it still makes me a bit unsure.
It really depends on what the warning is for. People that were being trollish that one time is a lot different than that dude who

I wouldn't be too worried about your warning. It may not have been constructive but you've shown through other posting you're above that. You've also never been warned outside of that one time in your entire two years here on the site, while remaining active, and I think that also speaks for quite a bit.
Sarcasm is cool, you just need to make sure people know that it's sarcasm. It's also not a bad idea to follow up sarcasm with an actual constructive remark. Sarcasm when used correctly can definitely make a good post more enjoyable to read, just make sure that sarcasm doesn't attack anyone.

Thanks for the application! We'll be reviewing them over the next few days to discuss them and find our new blood. Anyone who is declined will receive a message stating so and people who are accepted will receive a lovely wall of text.
And for anyone reading this that has applied, if you are declined, it's probably not anything against you as a person. We don't want to bring on too many moderators and we also do prefer people who are already quite active on the site and have demonstrated through their history on here that they know our rules. You're always allowed to reapply in the future when apps open and we may very well choose you.
@Flux: Good points and I agree, but I think it goes a bit too far to put it on such a grand scale as "society wouldn't find it acceptable and you should not even post it as a non-staff member". The issue is not about someone wanting to praise paedophilia, cannibalism, racism etc., which it is obviously off-limits. It's about some topics that choosing a side will mean - in the minds of some forum members - that the management is by association taking a side as well, even when disclaimers are in place. I'm glad to see things are very quiet here, and it means you are doing a great job, but getting trapped in such a situation can be far easier than you expect - if you haven't witnessed it yourself, you should be happy...

I'm sure most people are aware of this but I just wanted to add that "Kappa" is generally used by many users as a disclaimer of sorts for sarcastic posts. For example, posting "Wisp OP. Kappa" on a deck that uses Wisps (probably not the best example). This just informs everyone that you're not serious about Wisps being OP in order to prevent confusion. I'm sure you could think of several other ways to let other users know as well, such as adding another easily understood disclaimer such as "(Sarcasm)" or something along those lines.
As a general rule for my conduct anywhere on the internet I try to remember that this is the internet and no matter how obvious it may seem to me at the time, sarcasm is not as easily observed in text. In face-to-face conversations we have tone, body language, and gestures we can use to create a certain effect with our words, but it's much harder to do that in just about every other form of communication, so it doesn't hurt to edit a "Kappa" into your posts if they're satirical, even if it might seem obvious to you, because chances are someone might interpret it the wrong way. That's not necessarily the fault of either user, it's just a flaw of internet communication.

Well, then I at least know there is still a possibility. I'll do my best to stay in good standing from now on.
That last example... Did that actually happen or was that just an exaggeration?
Alright submitted an application too. I just hope that my lack of moderating experience won't be a problem. But if I don't get picked it's okay. I'd just like to support this site a bit more. :)

So if I am a mod I can't contribute to a debate without taking sides?

I think they said that you can take part in debates, so long as you go about it in a civil and constructive manner.

Applied! Sarcasm is so tricky when other cultures don't even have it! The kappa at the end always helps haha.
If you're happy and you know it... well that's good :)
