So after I hit legened on EU today, my legend rank was 3288. After winning another match against a Diamond rank 8 player (I knew his rank after inviting him), I cimbed by 164 and my rank in legend became 3124.
So, I have 2 questions here:
1- How does matchmaking work and why would a legend player player play against a Diamond 8 in ranked?
2- Where can I get some statistics about how many player are still actively playing Hearthstone?
I actually thought matchmaking is pure shit last week. Now I am 100% sure. My friend started playing HS this week. Today I helped him build first deck (DH), because he has no cards available. I told him to try ranked, that he should be matched against new players as well. He played 4 games in ranked. First game agains 1k win warlock with all golden deck. Others against ppl with golden heroes or legend cardback. Even for me navigating him it was as hard as playing on my account (D3 wild, D5 standard). In arena or casual it was just fine. He played against bad / new players. But in ranked it was real what the fuck blizzard moment...
One note - I dont think it matters, but he created HS account like 2-3 years ago, but didn't even completed tutorial...
The matchmaking for legend players is MMR based, as it has always been. That Diamond 8 player was most likely:
-A player who finished around your rank last season but has not play as much this season.
but could also be:
-A player with a VERY high winrate causing his MMR to be a lot higher than his rank would suggest.
and maybe:
-You played at an odd time so you were matched with a player below your level.
At some point, they should just release the hidden MMR like they eventually did in StarCraft 2 so we don't have all these speculations. We should all know ranks do not mean much already. Reaching legend now is pretty much like having a peak in rank 2 in the previous system.

you trolling, the 1k warlock was probably the 1 legendary that gives you a random deck, plus you need to have all characters leveled to 20 before you can even try arena or tavern brawl. so I assume he won many games straight at the beginning (typically DH) and then got put against similar winrate people
You dont need all, he just have Mage and you actually get DH on lvl 20 directly. Other heroes lvl 1 or 2.
I wisht it wasn't true, but that's how it is. He never played rank and very first games are just nice example how blizz fucked up. This should never happen, because it is terrible experience to new players. And for me as well, because I wanted to show him strength of DH even with just cards he got for free.
Also seems like blizz doesn't count him as a new player. Instead of being it the 40 level league, he started directly on r10 bronze with 5 stars amplifier. Also he received deck of choice from blizzard as 'returning player'.

You said the account was old, and that might very well be the problem. When they made the new ladder system they probably put alle existing accounts in one "leauge" and made the other for brand new players who created one for the first time.
Or
You just faced a player playing his or her first game in you region, but since they like Heathstone, and have too much money they bought a lot of packs before.
You should have tried a least a couple of more matches to saying what they were

Definetly not on the performance of last seasons or last seasons but overall account stats.
I am legend MMR, right now I am still just Gold 5 because I don't play this game that much anymore and battlegrounds. The last time I was beyond Rank 15 was maybe a year ago where I played until rank 9 I guess.
But some years ago I pulled off legend every single month, between GvG and the next expansion.
This definetly must be the reason I am still legend ranked. But I am honest, even though I am just Gold 5 right now and I miss squashing low rank plebs all the time the games overall are just better due to MMR.
It is a joke... Rank 3-1 was always super hard. Most player you faced gave their maximal effort possible to get to legend, you where happy if you played in between a legend player with a fun deck. Combined with the Rank 5 floor "fun deck playere" this new system makes it easier then ever to get legend. It doesn't feel earned this season...
Yeah, the account is old, but never played ranked before yesterday.
We played 5 matches in ranked, all against 500+ wins heroes, one with legend cardback. And the idea about first game in the region - it was 1k+ wins warlock, so definitely not his first game there...
After the warlock we faced ress priest, full spell mage and tempo DH. But I made him switch to the Reno's riches mage (received from blizz). All of those guys with cool cardbacks & 500+ wins heroes.

I agree that it was easier, since there were only 3 stars per level for rank 1-3, but I don't think it was just MMR based, because unlike 10-4 diamond where I matched against a lot of legend players that had let go of tryharding and were trying a variety of decks 3-1 I played mostly demon hunter, Galakrond warlock, priest and druid, all pretty refined builds. Other then the lower amount of stars required the other reason it was easy was simply that after getting to rank 2 2stars I switched to a new tempo demon hunter that was really good. it was just easy to win against everyone else including the other demon hunters.... but even if I'm right about the switching to ranked try hards at the end, likely since it's so much easier to rank up earlier those ranked try hards might be of a lower mmr.
This is still happenning to me and I'm starting to feel sorry for these rank 8-9 players that I keep meeting at legend.
Rank != mmr
Don't feel sorry, those are certainly of your same level.
Well that is what blizzard says. But how come new player that never played ranked is matched against people that have 1k win hero and full golden deck? And the others also weren't just playing some fun wacky deck, but classic netdecks. I am playing game for a long time and it feels like my friend (the new player) is matched against ppl I play against. This just feels totally wrong. On the other hand in Casual it was just fine, playing guys with predefined decks and obviously low skill level. In Arena it was a bit harder, but still looking good considering we drafted weak warlock deck.

1. Because blizzard wants to control who plays who based on their opinion of what 'fun' is.
2. Do bots count?

Nope, it was galakrond Warlock.
