this is the first month i'm very close to hitting legend for the first time. But i'm also pretty close to giving up, because it's so exhausting and frustrating. I played about 30-50 games between diamond 3 and 1 and i still didn't reach it. And now i wanted to know what's your experience in climbing to legend rank. Do you have fun or did you just want to get there once?
And those who made it multiple times: why do you do it?
For me it feels like a horrible experience and i just do it because i always wanted to reach legend since i started playing HS.
Well i'm trying to get my first time legend too. Using a highlander mage deck and i had been jumping back and forth between d2-d4 for a couple days now. Too many aggro DHs, and if i don't draw the perfect answer EVERYTURN then i'm ded, had some game where i drew prefectly and i died anyway. I'm still learning the matchup (other than vs DHs ofc), started playing like 3 weeks ago.
Well this month I took the right time and deck and went 15-0 with Demon Hunter from diamond 5 to legend with Demon Hunter shortly after the class released, but I know your frustration. I have been legend once before and rank 1 or 2 a few more times, but as you said it's exhausting and frustrating to keep playing game after gaming winning and losing and not progressing for hours and hours. That's why I usually don't push to legend. I also kinda feel the same in legend rank now as I wanted to get to higher legend ranks, but I've been stuck at about rank 5k for a week now without progressing.
But heads up, if you've gotten to diamond 1, you can get to legend. Tweak your deck according to the meta and play every game as if it was the deciding game in the World Championships. You'll have a much better focus and will make less mistakes that way (at least I do) :). Though of course it's much more relaxing to just sit back and play like I usually do. Maybe that's why I'm still stuck at 5k :P
i find it enjoyable to pass time. I think it is important to enjoy the losses as well as the wins as there will be a lot of them.
one month i was two wins away and lost 17 straight back to rank 4 - wasnt the funnest experience at the time but looking back on it it was pretty funny.
Getting to legend is fun, but don't let the grind ruin your ability to have fun with the game. It's too bad one or two decks dominate the ladder so much. Either you play to the ladder, or you have to accept it will be much harder to climb.
First time I hit Legend was, when I didn't care. Before that I have made few pushes and never actually reached it - not because of lack of skill or bad decks, but most likely because I was getting frustrated and tilted with long grind, bad match-ups, unlucky looses, bad draws and generally being stuck. After every bad streak I was closing hearthstone and taking a few days long break - you can't really reach Legend like that.
Everything changed when I stopped trying. I was just going to play for the sake of playing. Should I end up at rank 17 (old system) - fine. I play the game, because I like it after all, why should I even care about any goals? I would still play it if there wasn't any ranking system at all.
So I just played for the sake of playing. And I reached legend.
Tilt is a terrible thing in HS. It's not like setting yourself goals is a bad thing. It doesn't necessarily work for me in case of a card game, but if it works for you - fine. Just don't let yourself be tilted.
last month hit legend in wild(first time) and this month yesterday hit legend again in standard(3rd time legend), one thing i learned from pro player is that they always keep calm while playing whatever the rank is, thats what i do and helped me alot, try to dont get mad that easy, 2 -3 years ago when i was at rank 1 5 stars, I started to sweat and getting nervous, hitting legend makes you feel awesome
A long time ago, when I hitted legend for the first time, climbing was a blast mostly because I was playing with a deck I really enjoyed at that moment. Never felt so good while playing this game. Good memories! :)
I've already bitched about this before but for me it's been brutal. Made it to the top of rank 6 only to get slaughtered by a Demon Hunter and have dropped all the way back to Rank 10. Every player I play has either the Legend card back or card backs like Pandaria or Rainbow.
Hit Legend once before and that was wayyyyy easier for me than the current MMR.
Take a meta deck, get really good at it. When you struggle at the various plateaus ranks 3 and 1 generally, tweak you deck to deal with the consistent matchups that it gives to you. Don't get discouraged if you get bounced from rank 1 back to rank 4 or 5, the system does that. Just keep making adjustments until you find that magic spot where it is giving you matchups you can beat consistently.
I found leaving kayn and maiev coaxed the system into consistently giving me dh mirrors while not queing me into big taunts. While my deck was supposedly unfavored, they are solid cards that can be useful in the matchup which enabled me to win enough of my 90 or so DH mirrors to allow me to reach legend.
The first time I hit legend, I think I played...230 games that month? For a 130-100 record or something like that. Yes, I know, that was a lot of games. I made it I think on the 2nd or 3rd last day of the month.
After that, it did somehow feel easier. My record for hitting legend was I think 60-70 games. I know I made it by the 8th of whatever month that was. Literally everyone and their dog played a specific deck (odd paladin I think?) back then though, and it was pretty easy to beat if you chose your deck correctly, and tweaked other decks accordingly.
Basically, after hitting it for the first time, my goal became "how few games can I play to get legend".

I just reached Legend today for the first time since starting in 2015. It's worth noting that this was the first time I actually tried though. (I usually don't care about ladder except for the monthly rewards.)
I was 1 or 2 wins away from Legend 3 days ago, then had a big loss streak, completely tilted and dropped down to Diamond 4. So I definitely understand your frustration. I just stopped playing for two days after that, but finally tried again today. I still needed a few breaks, but I finally made it after a few "final boss" attempts.
So... Don't give up! :) If you're already at D3-1, you can also make it to Legend. When you reach it, it will be a big weight off your shoulders.
I have no desire to actively try it again, as I'm happy with the monthly rewards at Diamond 5.
This is my view as well. I only did it for the cardback (never bothered again), and I only care about the rewards at Rank 10 (one non-golden epic is meh).
Only attempting it this season I want the free classic legendary...and then never again.
I had a great run from rank 5d to 1d with my dh deck 3 days ago in the morning. Endboss just before legend was control warlock and then I faced multiple warlock control decks which are natural counters to the aggro dh I was playing so now I‘m back to d5 again.
I tried ranking up again today but it seems worse now. So I tried a midrange big demon dormant dh deck (which still gets hard countered due to sac pact :D), changed to midrange dragon paladin but in the end zephrys wins the game for them.
So I just lost interest to reach legend actually and now continue playing skyrim vr ;) its just too much of a grind for me and in the end you need to be super lucky with matchups/cards. But respect to all of you having such patience and stamina!
This meta is so boring/ ive been depressed in lieu of current events not being able to work that I find myself not motivated to climb even though I have so much time. I'm not incentivized tp climb high because the most I can earn is a lowly epic card. I really miss golden rewards, they were the reason I climbed.
I reached legend several times in standard and in wild. Reaching legend in standard is more difficult because your cardpool is very limited. It's not easy at all because your worst nightmare in reaching legend is time. It takes a lot of time and effort to get there. Commitment is one thing but that grind is sometimes unbearable. This season i reached legend in wild with an off-meta deck and for me this is key - no one expects a strange deck, no one can counter it. Try it, and if you have a hard time - don't play, wait, rest, be patient. You will get there eventually
Just hit Standard legend for the first time yesterday, played 7 archetypes across 5 classes on the path to do so, ending at 67W-27L. My recipe for success was basically:
Find an archetype I want to play
Determine what cards are "core" in the deck (usually ends up being about 23-27 cards)
Research what the deck's bad matchups are
Tech the remaining cards accordingly
The best advice I can give is to just trust your decision making. If you lose because of a decision, but you are certain that it was the right decision to make with the information you had at the time, don't be afraid to make a similar play in future games. Other than that, just be excited about improving! You'll get better over time, so focus on enjoying the climb and becoming better at the game rather than gaining rank.

Easiest legend ever, made second day after expansion droped.
Way to short and easy to get there. Thats why its already 30k legends, when it used to be max 15k.
