So this time around I pre-ordered the mega bundle and I started saving gold early and I managed to save 7.3k gold and will probably cap at 7.5 so that means I'll be opening around 165 packs. This is the most packs I've opened on release day. Do you think this is enough to get most meta decks? I also have 16k dust saved.
I obviously know that buying more packs would make it better, if I could I would just drop $300 each expansion but being realistic and with the dupes protection, do you think 165 packs is decent? Or should I look into getting the $50 pre-order as well?
For get each common you need to open 30 pack, 60 for rare, 235 for epic and 291 for legendery. So i think 165 pack is ok. U get 5,5 common set, 2,75 rare set. For common duplicate u get 1170 dust and for rare 1125 dust, so u get 2295 dust, all common, all rare and some epic and legendary. Most meta deck use mostly common and rare so i think u can build meta deck
140-160 is what I open every xpac, depending where the legendary pity timer ends at.
I usually get most of the epics, not getting almost all of them because of duplicates, so I went to count and with the new rule I would miss only between 4-8 epics, which should be easy to craft, if it's needed. Around 8-10 legendaries.
I'd wager that Ashes of Outland will be less relevant for meta decks than Saviors of Uldum and Descent of Dragons. Getting that many AoO packs might actually be unnecessary.
And 16k dust is more than enough or just enough to get started, depending on what cards you have and what class you want to play. If you like Highlander decks and have none of the key legendaries, it's barely enough. If you only care about playing Demon Hunter, it's most likely enough.
With the 90 packs plus the couple free ones you get, you'll have all commons, rares, probably a good chunk of the epics and if you're lucky, you'll have a few of the decent legendaries. With extra packs, you can expect to get about 2 more epics every 10 packs, and about 1 legendary every 20 packs. With some bad luck, it's more like 1-2 epics in 10 packs, and 1 legendary in about 30. So, that's what you'd get out of more packs.
Unless you aim to get as many legendaries as possible, I'd just open the 90 packs and then decide how many more packs I want for the missing epics and legendaries, or if I even want any of those I'm missing. Again, I expect that a lot of the cards from the previous sets will continue to be relevant.
If you want to get as many as possible, the 50$ pre-order will get you another guaranteed golden one, which is probably worth it.

it's all correct but for legendaries: there are 24 legendaries. you get the first one on average from 5 packs + every other from 19-20 packs. Let's say it's 19. so to get all 24 you will need 5 packs + 23 * 19 = 5 + 437 = 442 packs Even if you take in consideration extra dust you will still need around 340 packs at least to craft every misiing legendary
I've bought the mega bundle, but unless I'm really unlucky opening, I'm tempted to try and hoard gold this expac and just use dust to craft whatever I need for decks. In the past, I've usually burned through around 8k gold topping up packs.
Every so often, you'll have an expansion where you get a terrible run and need 30+ packs/legendary for 150 packs. You want to have reserves spare to cope with that if you want to play standard competitively.
You're sitting on a "gold mine", haha! Well done! I bought the 55 pack bundle, and will have right around 1500 gold saved up. I've got enough dust right now for three legendaries, if need be. I feel like I'm in a decent position. Not optimal, but decent.
OP: you should be ok with 165 packs. You won’t get everything but you will get a great start. My advice to you and anyone really is not to go and craft what you’re missing right away. Just be patient and see how the meta shapes up before blowing your dust. We’ve all wasted dust crafting things that look awesome only to find out they were duds. The longer you can hold off before crafting, the better choices you will make. And be careful of crafting memes. Just because it works on a few YT videos doesn’t mean that it’s good. see where you are once you’ve opened the bundle packs. If you’re missing a lot then use your gold slowly. Just don’t get too greedy. When Uldum came out I actually got everything I needed from my preorder and a bit of dust and was able to save my 7k gold. Right now that gold is sitting at 15k because I didn’t need to use it for Dragons either. If I don’t need anything after opening my packs then I’ll save it and keep building that pile. GL!
You could easily spend a bit more, because i think its not enough
Wrong, if you are a Standart player the Mega Bundle is certainly enough, regarding the fact we are all able to dust Sets that rotate out at the start of the Year of Phoenix and get back a massive return of Dust due to that. On top of that we already gained around 6k from the Hall of Fame Cards.
I'am opening about 130 Packs, will have 21k dust (Yes I'll dust all the Sets that rotate including all its Legendarys, Epics and Rares, RIP Ziliax my beloved brother) and I feel that's the best Start I'd ever had going into a new Season.

Your reasoning is correct but you're making a drastic choice never ever to be able to play wild. I'm not a wild player myself but decided a long time ago to keep my wild cards because I want to keep all opportunities open. I would only recommend your choice for F2P players where money/dust is an issue. From a pure pleasure of playing, I prefer my approach. Now you can also have a more opportunistic approach and disenchant all but the better cards that rotate into wild. This would still give you a reasonable amount of dust and still keep most opportunities open as only a few key cards are needed to be able to play successfully in wild.
To answer the original question, opening 165 pack per expansion should enable you to get everything you need in the long run. Now, if you get really unlucky on one expansion, you better have some dust saved on the side (Happened to me on Gadgetzan, I almost left the game...). With recent HoF, who doesn't?

Yeah you will be more than good. Any missing meta piece can be crafted afterwards.
You should have enough, specially after the duplicate change.
I see on reddit this tread

That's a good amount to play almost anything.

Missing lethal since June 2015.
As a f2p player I usually find 70 packs is enough for 2 meta decks if I'm frugal. (Not taking every legendary in a highlander deck for instance)
I think you have enough there to play at least the top 10-12 decks. Maybe not every deck, but if you only care about tier 1 and 2 you should be fine.
