I noticed while reading over the Rise of Shadows reveal page that, "We will see some old mechanics return!" So far the only old mechanic mentioned is the "Forbidden Words" card. However, in this new expansion, the League of EVIL has access to Lackeys and Schemes while the Dalaran Defenders only have Twinspell (which might not even be exclusive to them).
With problematic cards that made Hero Powers very powerful leaving Standard (ie. Genn, Baku, and the Death Knights), is it time for this lackluster mechanic to make a return? The theme could fit too seeing as how even citizens of Dalaran are supposedly rallying against the invasion of EVIL. Thoughts?
That's on my wish list because I think it's cool, but think about it: we come from a year where HP synergies ruined the game. I'm kinda afraid to ask for more of it
I dont think so, because none of the villans is from the Grand Tournament. The "forbidden" mechanic was from the WotOG and Madam L. introduced that set. Same goes for Rafaam, he has the Golden Monkey "mechanic" which is from the LoE, the set where he is from. So it kinda looks like we will get old mechanics from the sets that the villans are from in their respective class.
I mean, its not that I wouldnt like to see a few cards with said mechanic, its just that I dont think that it will be the case.
Probably not with Genn and Baku gettin HoF'ed. Would seem kinda silly to just miss out on the opportunity, tho mby they didnt want to make odd/even decks even stronger, that being said, past inspire cards kinda needed that push to be viable, so ...
For a long time i've wanted inspire to come back but i think effects like overkill, rush, and lifesteal are healthier for the game so now i don't really want to see the old stuff. I'm excited for twinspell, it's almost a variation of some of the dungeon run and monster hunt spell treasure cards which are incredibly fun and powerful.

That does seem to be the case. I'm really hoping to see some more of the non-keyword mechanics that the villains used. Curse of Rafaam could see a return as well. It's even a Warlock spell. Maybe some Boom Bots for Dr. Boom?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. There was enough complaints about Genn and Baku that adding back Inspire during that time period would just cause more outrage. With the power level of cards decreasing again, it might make sense to bring it back slowly. That being said, Mage does still have some Hero Power synergy cards.
Considering that "Forbidden Words" is an old gods mechanic, and priest has Lazul, an old god representative.
so maybe some classes will get an old mechanic based on the legendary that represent them.
maybe we will get 3 tri-class neutral cards this time ?
Inspire?
Highlander?
Yeah, I'm hoping to see this as well. The villains getting their time to shine is expected and I like how they're bringing back forgotten mechanics for each of the classes. However, we have no idea who is representing the Defenders (except for Kalecgos). Will any old mechanics be brought back for them or will their only defense be Twinspell?

Well... no...
In a blogpost about returning mechanics, they stated they don't want new players to be confused by new keywords.
So it will likely be all the non-keyword mechanics:
I think spare parts are very likely. It is the first thing that comes to mind from GvG. They are easy to understand. They are interesting. They are easy to attach to any card. BTW, mech warrior may get sweet tools because dr Boom.
I hope they have more singleton cards with effects similar to kazakus and Reno, its something that I miss from the game.
I play Wild only for the opportunity to play Highlander decks, I've become addicted to this.
I think this is a legit "mechanic" that should also have its own non-legendary support cards like even/odd support cards.
Now, Blizzard knows how popular Reno and Kazakus used to be. I think there is hope especially with the "call back" cards they introduced this expansion.

For my sanity playing wild... NO! NOO! NOOO!
Reno decks will grow in strength every expansion, wild reno decks don't need more cards that reward singleton because this is a very minor deckbuilding restriction for wild

I don't want cards that reward me for playing singleton, just cards that are worth more alone than double. Or more legendary cards since they are singleton by design, that works too. The introduction of legendary spells in Boomsday was a big step in the right direction.
Twinspell mechanic might be exactly what I'm looking for actually.

I think the new Lackey mechanic is a nice call back to the Spare Parts of GvG. Cards that add thematic non-collectible cards to your hand is another mechanic I wish was used more often. From what it seems, even more Lackeys will be added with the other two sets during Year of the Dragon.
As far as Highlander decks go, it's tough to say if they'll add more specific support. Twinspell is probably going to be extremely valuable for those Wild decks though. With cards like Genn, Baku, and Keleseth leaving Standard, it would be a bit awkward to add "build around" decks right back in to the game.

Build around cards are cool for standard when there are a limited card pool. I actually loved that cards like Raid Leader found its way to meta decks... And I am actually sad to see Baku and Genn going away from standard... Wild is a different story. I am terrified by those two being there.
Most likely not. Hero powers are already strong enough thanks to Genn & Baku, augmenting them further is not needed or advised.
Since Genn and Baku are rotating out, I dont think this is a problem. What I like about Inspire , in fact is the best mechanic in game ! It basically reads if you want an effect ,press this button ,if not nevermind, it is not as cancerous like deathrattle, or 1-shot like battlecry, or being battlecry ripoff like Combo, or useless if your cards cost a lot like Echo, it also works well with recruit.

It would become a problem in Wild where you already have inspire cards to further augment Baku & Genn. Inspire is fine as a mechanic but it should be a one-and-done keyword unless or until they stop being lazy and make Baku & Genn less egregious.

Inspire is a great mechanic that is poorly done in TGT, I hope they make a comeback.
