I've been playing secret Hunter for a little while with some success, but I took out my Trackings because I always felt like they hurt more than they helped or just didn't help as much as something else could. I look at most of the other secret Hunter decks and a lot of them play it. I have a few questions or am just looking for insights or how other people see/use the card.
If you get it in your opening hand do you use it turn one?
do you swap it out in mulligan phase? or look for it?
do you usually wait until your hand is low to use it? or just play it when you have a leftover mana?
I know most of this is going to be situational and the correct answer is probably just to do whatever is necessary at the given time, but if you can help at all or have any insights it would be greatly appreciated. You can look at basically any standard secret hunter and thats what I'm running (Subject 9, Mossy, Secretkeeper, Spellstone, about 7 secrets, etc)
Personally I wouldn't keep tracking in the mulligan.
My general rule is: I use tracking if I know exactly what I'm looking for. I sometimes use it with left over mana if I don't have any good plays the next turns, but that feels wrong quite often.
A note for the mental state: Always be prepared to get your 3 best cards in the tracking.
There are secret hunter lists without tracking. For me it doesn't feel that necessary in secret hunter. In deathrattle hunter it is more usefull in my opinion, because your synergetic packages are smaller/more specific than in secret hunter.
My deck below has tools to deal with more aggressive decks, and if they aren’t in my opening hand I think tracking is a great way to skip a few draws towards getting what you need. It was the same for more aggressive hunters when they were looking for the kill command to end the game.
Because my deck has combo pieces, I have to decide what my win condition will be before using them. If I can get all the way to Mecha’thun against a control warlock or warrior then I’ll wait until I’ve drawn most combo pieces before using them to burn down the last few cards in my deck.
Other times, if I feel like I’m falling behind in the game I’ll have to take a risk and go searching for the cards I need. I think players often hate the idea of losing good cards from their future draw, but it’s worth it sometimes to get the ascendency in the present.
Stitched tracker can often get me the minions I want from my deck right now, so I can play tracking without wrecking my win condition.
As the person stated above 1 Tracking is decent, but I would say 2 Trackings are just great. As getting closer to Fatigue with any form of Hunter doesn't usually bother you. Because you are trying to finish the game way before that and if you can't, you are most likely losing anyway.
You can play Tracking on turn one if you are looking for something to do on turn 2 and don't have anything in hand.
Don't play Tracking just when you have mana leftover. Play it when you are looking for something more specific. Usually answers to play of the enemy opponent. If you don't get what you're looking for, think and choose the best option for the next phases of the game. Usually valuable stuff outweighs the rubbish you run in Hunter.
Hope that helps atleast a bit.
Edit: I see I was a little later than the rest of y'all, but atleast I have a slightly deffered opinion about playing Tracking on turn 1.
Not sure if to use it on turn 1, but tracking is a staple in the spell deck. Tracking also thins out the deck and that makes the draws significantly better.
Even if the game goes to fatigue (e.g., against Odd Warrior), due to Deathstalker Rexxar creating Zombeasts with Raptor Hatchling you can fight fatigue to some extend.
Unless you expect the game to go into fatigue, the common aversion to discarding cards from the deck is unfounded (you might as well pretend those cards were at the bottom of your deck which you have no intention to reach anyway). Tracking is a pretty good play if you have unspent mana or you have no good play next turn and can search for a synergy card or a card to curve out on. Usually, you'll also be offered one or two choices that are simply no longer relevant, like a candleshot, which you're more than happy to discard so your topdecks are likely to be better.
Nobody yet? *sigh* Okay... You have to click it with your mouse (or tap it if you're on mobile) and drag it into the board, that's how you use spells that don't require a target.
I can't really talk about Secret Hunter, because I haven't played it (and Tracking does seem a bit underwhelming in secret hunter, since you also have some good turn-1 plays), but I'll explain Tracking in Spell Hunter.
In Spell Hunter, the best first turns you can get is to have an early spellstone (or even better : 2), and play 2 secrets during turn 2-3-4, to play a fully charged spellstone turn 5. This leads to a good boost in winrate. Tracking can help you achieve that. You can play it on turn 1 to fish for spellstone (if you don't have one), or for secrets (if you have a spellstone and no secret). This can also helps you get a crucial card in some matchup (unleash the hound or explosive trap against Odd Paladin for example). Turn 1, you usually don't have much to play anyway (Candleshot is usually no needed turn 1, hunter's mark is stupid, all you have is secret plan). As for mulligan, it depends, but if I have spellstone, tracking, and no secret, I will probably keep the tracking to fish for a secret.
"do you usually wait until your hand is low to use it? or just play it when you have a leftover mana?" -> Always when you have leftover mana. (nothing better to do, including hero power)

I just use 1 tracking just for generating answers, play as you want not as decks have been listed

Tracking is for fishing for specific cards and therefore situational.
You can use it on T1 if you are lacking a curve, but I usually toss it during mulligan and barely ever play it on T1.
I think it is better when you know what you need than just whenever you have spare mana.

I would use it on turn 1 if I know exactly what I'm playing against. Like any of the odd or even decks as they basically give the game away.
