I decided to do some analysis to see what I have spent on this game and I was super surprised. I keep hearing how expensive this game is and wanted to find out what it really costs me. Shocked to find out that since I started playing I have averaged about $33/month in spend which is a lot considering most subscriptions are half that or less.
The reason why cost / pack varies is because I get itunes cards at a 15% discount and have had other means of getting packs cheaper than advertised.
Here are some stats below on what I spent per expansion. I started playing this game on January 3, 2015:
I hope you love the game, because if you've spent $1000 on it I am actually pretty shocked. I've only spent about $150 in the last year or so, as I try to build up gold to get packs for each expansion. Hasn't worked out perfectly each time, and I get greedy here or there (or desperate for dust), but wow... I hope you are a legend player!
Good post though, with all the complaints recently over price hikes its good to see what people are actually doing on a case by case basis, maybe help some plebs spend better in this game so they won't have so much buyers remorse.
yea I wonder if Hearthstone would make more money as a subscription model. If they charged $20 / month you would def get more players paying and if everyone gets all the cards its a more sustainable business longer term..It would make the 1% like me happy and I would think a good amount of free to play players would convert over.
For all the people saying uhh it could be way worse, $30 a month is not that bad bla bla bla... Well yeah, it could be way worse, each pack could be $30 on its own or maybe you would have to pay $100 a month just to build thrash decks but that's not the point, the game is expensive and it's just gonna get worse with blizzard only realising full expansions rn and no adventures, he's played for 34 months so almost 3 years, he could invest that same money in getting 19 completely different AAA games... So don't tell me the game is not expensive , open your eyes.

If they'll charge $20/month their whales will run away because whales want to dominate plebs, not to play competitive ladder with equal opportunities. And F2P players will migrate into other CCG rather then convert.
Wait so $30 a month for over a year is cheap to you on a "F2P" collective card game that isn't even seriously competitive? WOW
Its srsly competetive there are big prize tourneys arent there?, dont be a sheep. But on another note, i play for fun and 30 bucks is like an hours work for me. Im from Denmark
Competitive Hearthstone? Lol, best joke I heard today.
Yes by no means I am complaining. I was really implying that $1k I spent on this game is alot but in the perspective of $30/month it really isn't that bad. I definitely play more than 10hrs a month too so $3/hr is nothing. Considering I can buy a movie on itunes for $15-$20 and thats only 2hrs gaming is way way better value. Thats why I just bit the bullet and bought ATVI stock. Think it could be bigger than disney one day.
I think I've spent around $1k on Hearthstone as well, except I've been playing for longer. It's really not expensive to keep up if you play the game regularly and buy a few packs when a new set comes out. As far as cost per hour of play this has probably been one of the cheapest games I've played.
Honest question: do you find Hearthstone that much fun that you'd rather pay for it than buy a new game every other month? That's where your spending is; it would be somewhere between 15 and 20 games over the course of two years, assuming $50 - $60/game.
Your mileage, as always, may vary but I see this as a very steep investment in HS.
CCGs are generally very expensive. It's been said before but this doesn't hold a candle (hehe) to the costs for something like MTG. You could spend $500 per expansion easily there. Literally have no problem spending $150-$200 per expansion on something I spend 10+ hours a week playing. I really hate the bitching about money in this game. If it's too expensive, don't play the game. Blizzard is a for-profit company.
To the OP, it's impressive how cheap you got your packs down to. I have a feeling if I did this analysis, that I'd be at like $1.20/pack.

Professional Poker Player trying to make it in Hearthstone. I am the opposite of f2p.
I'm going to point out that your average is now higher, closer to $40 per month, now that they are no longer releasing adventures.
I'm curious how complete your collection is. Can you play any deck you want or do you still need to pick and choose certain classes?
As a f2p player, I can tell you my dust and gold reserves are going to run out in about a year(that's after disenchanting all useless legendaries like maexxna and with only focusing on one or two competitive classes. Back in MSG, I could build the top decks in 7/9 classes)
im playing the game since close beta legendary multi times i believe i have spent on the game like 300-400$ max, i'll never spend 1k $ on game lol! although i got decent salary but i'll never spend that much on a game
Well to be fair I got a free 40 packs for Gadgetzan because there was an amazon error and they gave it to me for free. So that took off a few pennies. Pre-ordering also helps a good deal. I used to get 20% off itunes cars but no longer so now stuck with just 15% which is still decent. If you plan ahead there is no reason that you should be able to get $1.10/pack overtime.

I agree my avg/month is probably closer to $40/month this year. Currently have 6k dust & another 24k in backlog for dups. Also have most of the cards I need to play the major decks but not all. If you look at my profile you can get a feel although I havent updated it in a while so have most of the Frozen throne cards except maybe 5-6 legendaries and some epics. I typically use the KRIPP method and only dust when there is a nerf to get the best value for my dust.

Dude, its a card game, card games are expensive, card games arn't even supposed to be F2P, you have to buy cards to play the game. In real life for MTG and yu-gi-oh, cards dont just fall in your lap. Grow up, be thankful that blizzard even has a F2P system implemented.
