soooo do we start making the class now or wait until the voting is over?
You can start now, but keep in mind that 3 of the 6 requirements that will be chosen will have to be met eventually ... so either come up with a general concept or just some parts for now. Or just wait 2 days :p
so we have to come up with a hero that deathwing likes (aka, "fitting him" or what), and meets several regulations?
And can be from any universe and so?
And only the standard set from this year (plus potentially from the next expansion)?
Wow, that's wacky. And I might even have time to join this one. May I get through the first season this time.
I'll have to think on a good friend for deathwing. Something that does'nt fall appart if any of these regulations gets through.
So although we don't have any rules that restrict your class's flavour to be "Deathwing-friendly", it'd nice to create a class that Deathwing would like. But remember, friends come in all different shapes and sizes! So, really, you could make anything! (Although a reason as to why Deathwing likes your class would be hilarious)
Yes! Your class can be from any universe! Warcraft, Doctor Who, Magic: The Gathering, Ducktales, Harry Potter...you could even create your own original class if you like! (e.g. A Demigod, a Monster, a Chair)
Yes, this year, the competition will only include standard sets. Here's how the phases of the competition will work out:
Phase I: Class Concept
Phase II: Basic Set
Phase III: Classic Set
Phase IV: Whispers of the Old Gods/One Night in Karazhan
Phase V: Mean Streets of Gadgetzan/Journey to Un'Goro
Phase VI: Knights of the Frozen Throne/Kobolds & Catacombs
Your class can be from any universe! Warcraft, Doctor Who, Magic: The Gathering, Ducktales, Harry Potter...you could even create your own original class if you like! (e.g. A Demigod, a Monster, a Chair)
What if we have a keyword that is somewhat exclusive to the class? As in, there are other cards that use the text but it would be weird for them to have the keyword (Like Y'Shaarj, Rage Unbounddoes not say 'At the end of your turn, Recruit a minion).
What if a lesser sect of the class has joined another gang for the cards in Mean Streets of Gadgetzan. Would the class have to be part of that gang or could it have it's own, weaker, smaller gang?
Thanks in advance!
Hello Allan! Welcome to the show!
First of all, the voting phase for the challenges hasn't finished yet, so we're not even sure if "A Whole New Word" will be chosen as one of the challenges your class has to follow in Phase I. So sit tight! Nonetheless, you can create a keyword that functions similarly to existing mechanics that are not keywords per se (e.g. that Recruit and Y'Shaarj, Rage Unbound example you brought up).
Since all HS classes are a part of only one Crime Family, your class can only be a part of one Crime Family. It's Crime Family loyalty. If your Crime Family finds out that your class has been working for the "other side", well it would be a shame if anything were to happen to your gold...
Thanks for the quick reply!
I'm in a bit of a sticky situation. The "lesser" part of the class is in the Jade Lotus but it would make no sense for the class to be summoning Jade Golems (I guess I could make some cards but it would be a bit odd) and I really like the class idea. Any advice?
Thanks in advance!
I think you misinterpreted me. You cannot have a lesser sect of your class join a different Crime Family. Your ENTIRE class must join a single Crime Family. So your class can do either one of 2 things:
Join an existing Crime Family. (You will not be making Tri-class cards because they already exist, and Hearthcards can't create cards with 4-class Crime Family emblems)
Create a new Crime Family that consists of official Hearthstone classes and/or other classes made within this competition. (You WILL be making Tri-class cards)
As such, I think you should go for the latter option if Jade Lotus isn't working out for your class!
Keep in mind that there might be some future challenges that may screw you up, so I wouldn't work on those Mean Streets of Gadgetzan cards just yet!

thanks for the info; since i've caught you, i have a few more questions, if you don't mind:
i want to make an "engineer" class, can i use the spare parts from back in GnG as part of the class identity and the basis for it's hero power? (not as a new key word, see my second question for that)
can i have more than one specific keyword for my class?

The first question will have to answer one of the mods who run this comp, but i would say no. Spare Parts were specifically part of GVG set alone and since then there was no other card that would revisit them. I suppose we could make an argument that Joust was revisited now in KAC after it was introduced in TGT, so same could be done with Spare Parts, but im not sure. The way i see it, argument can be made either way.
To your second question, i suppose it depends on the keyword. Shaman for example has kinda two specific keywords for its class - overload and windfury - tho windfury is not tied only to the shaman class, but it's seemingly a big part of the class'es identity. So if u used it in this way, i think it would be ok. Tho beware of using Choose One, Combo and Overload, since those r forbidden via the rules specifically.

I wanted to add some more detail to this. First, I'd steer clear of Spare Parts for the same reasons. An Engineer class can go so many different directions, they shouldn't have to rely only on Spare Parts tokens. Also, remember that Mechs didn't exist before GvG. So some of your Basic and Classic minions could "eventually" be Mechs, but you shouldn't have any Mech synergy in them.
I would advise against multiple unique keywords as too many get confusing and water down the class. Remember that most cards aren't too complicated. But a single keyword and some themes are ideal. Look at Rogue: they have Combo as their unique keyword. No other class uses it. But they also use Stealth, Poisonous, low cost cards, high card draw, return to hand effects, and low healing and multi-target effects.
I have some good ideas for this but I don't play WoW. Can someone tell me how can I get some good picks for my cards/hero? Thanks
Your allowed to do any kind of class you want, Warcraft or otherwise. But I'd recommend keeping it fantasy themed. Warcraft has an extensive lore that includes dragons, robots, demons, vampires, angels, time travel, other planets, etc. So you have plenty of room for all kinds of crazy ideas. But I wouldn't go too far away from something that's vaguely fantasy without risking losing people's interest.
As far as images, google. There's tons of art out there, including art in Magic the Gathering and other fantasies and card games. There's a couple links floating around this forum, too. And don't forget nonCollectible card art found in adventures and brawls that you can see on this site!
Well, way to go to Cogito for accidentally predicting that I had a Time Traveler class idea. Originally, it was a Chronomancer class, but I saw thepowrofcheese already made one. I figured this was pretty close so I would make this instead and I kinda kept the sand theme a bit.

Something like this?:D
Damn I think you won the competition already XD Here's my current idea (Class name instead of hero name atm):
"Insert name here is my name and souls are my game. Souls of course are the ultimate power supply. The only question was where to get enough of them to fulfill my desires. Flinging pathetic fireballs just wouldn't cut it with me. Even slaughtering village after village I just couldn't get enough power. But then my new bestie Deathwing started the cataclysm. Endless death, endless souls, endless power. I've absorbed millions of lost souls now. And finally, I have the fuel to bend the very fabric of reality to my will. Laws of physics? Pfft. Laws were made to be shattered."
What do you guys think of my atrocious backstory haha. Not 100% sure what the class will do yet but it'll probably focus on doing really bizarre things like my card from before that transforms minions into weapons.

Here's an idea I just came up with that I'm fleshing out:
Ogre Lord (King?)
The basic idea here is that you're a two-headed ogre. To reflect this, you have two separate hands. At the beginning of the game, you draw an extra card, but you have to split your cards into these two separate hands, and you can only use one at a time. The card you draw at the beginning of each turn alternates between which hand it goes to. To switch hands, you use your hero power:
It's really efficient, but it's hard to efficiently use your cards because you can only access about half of them at a time.
The class revolves around the oafish brutality of Ogre warriors and the cunning of Ogre Magi. There are "50% chance to do the wrong thing" cards, but also ways to control them through the Rage and Calm keywords. When you give a card Rage, it has 100% chance to do the wrong thing, and when you give it Calm, it has a 0% chance. You can make really efficient plays by using these cards under the right circumstances, because cards with "50% chance to do the wrong thing" are mana-efficient for their power.
The actual entry phase doesn't begin until this poll is decided, correct? That was my assumption but when I see people posting their classes ahead of time I get paranoid. @_@ I assume they're just like me though and know their class will fit any of these criteria.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. Some of the ideas posted will violate #3, but I think they're assuming that one won't go through. We just can't wait to post class ideas, even though phase 1 hasn't started yet.
So I'm not home yet, but got some time to give feedback!
@Turkeybag - So Reality Warper sounds a lot like a Warlock. They also eat souls and rip apart physics to summon demons. What can the Reality Warper do that's different? I've also commented on that Secret you posted earlier.
@DemonicPlushie - I like the name and theme, but there's a few balance concerns off the bat. Mimic seems odd for a keyword, and there's a lot of questions. Does it copy battlecries? Buffs? Can it get stuff from Silenced minions? All of your cards except Spellsteal look OP. Copying a minion's text can vary from "irrelevant" to "1 mana Ragnaros" or better. So Uncrowned Shadow should be (1) 1/1 at best (and the Uncrowned is specifically a Rogue organization).
@Broeck1 - I had an idea for a Necrolyte but I'm going with something else myself. There's definately some options for all 3. Personally though, I don't like the Runemaster's style of Hero Power that's so diverse and has many tokens.
@nurgling13 - You love pushing crazy ideas! Not sure how I like it yet. How does this one work with Finley? That could be a game breaker unless the 2 hands is a component of the Hero Power.

Righty ho! The actual discussion/early entry phase starts this Saturday. It seems like people are just making up classes and hoping that it'll fit the most voted challenges. Oh, if they only knew the future challenges...

I dont think mimic should be a keyword, you can just wrtie ”copy the text of” instead of it and it wouldnt really increase text size too much.
It begins! People posting ideas! I'll give feedback tonight when I'm on my computer.
