There's something we've seen every once in a while in our competitions that's a little odd: Folks will submit a minion that itself casts a spell. Typically these entries don't do extraordinarily well, but there have been a couple of exceptions, and while the concept is odd, it's perhaps not entirely without merit. This week we're going to explore the concept and see what we can do with it.
Your card must, itself, cast a spell. The most obvious existing examples include Yogg-Saron, Hope's End and Servant of Yogg-Saron, but you're free to have your cards cast specific spells rather than random ones.
There must be an easily identifiable reason why your card is casting a spell rather than just having an effect identical to that spell's effect.
We have whittled down ~130 valid entries to just 16 of the community's favorites. Check out all the finalists below and vote in our poll (vote for as many or as few as you like) to help decide the winner and be sure to check back after the poll finishes for the announcement of the winner and the start of a new theme!
I'm going to sound like a dick but I am not sure I really think any of these are that great. The line between troll entries and real entries for me is a bit frustrating. The meme level and gimmick level seems like it matters a lot more than anything and so every time I come to vote in the final poll pretty much none of the cards I upvoted have made it in.
Tooth for Tooth is my vote. I think the card is a clever play into an existing card and something that seems like a real card.

To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of the women.
There are some nice ideas here... it's also interesting to see there is a card that is almost the same as the card I designed for this week's competition... just saying.

My Entry for this week's Card Design Competition - Season 8.16:
I'm really surprised how many of these cards are casting spells with "targets chosen randomly". I expected a lot more straightforward cards, casting specific spells.
I'm not a huge fan of the casting random secrets, especially if they aren't in your deck. As some others have pointed out, part of the strategy of secrets is guessing what cards would be in your opponents deck, or bluffing your opponent (casting Counterspell, when your opponent expects Iceblock or something). These cards remove a lot of that strategy.
My favorite is Blind Oracle. Seems like it could turn "Steal Priest" into a real archetype. Shame this wasn't in gadgetzan, as stealing cards will probably not be as good when reno decks rotate out.
The only card that seems totally broken is Zenith. Shuffle a few times, play Malygos+Zenith. That's an extremely easy otk that can't be prevented easily.
What happens with Avatar of Sar. and an enemy Dreadsteed?
That's what I was wondering, but I assume that Avatar of Sargeras is also damaged and that the effect ends if it dies? This would be consistent with the new Yogg Saron change where it doesn't keep casting spells if it removes itself.
What happens with Avatar of Sar. and an enemy Dreadsteed?
I actually don't think that would be an infinite loop. The deathrattle will trigger after the battlecry is resolved. So any deathrattle summons like Savannah Highmane wouldn't have their tokens cleared.
I can't figure out if people see my card as a troll/meme entry (Xanzith the Everlasting) cause of the similarities with Patches the Pirate. It's in no way intended to be. I wanted to make a card that was playable, and with this effect I found a 1 mana 1/1 to be the best choice and still not overpowered. As I wrote in the submission topic, initially I couldn't find a character from WoW that would fit the effect (I'm not good with making up minion-names by myself, so I use characters from WoW when making a legendary). My first choice was Verdan the Everliving (boss from Wailing Caverns), but I honestly couldn't find any fitting art of a creeper that wasn't Fen Creeper or Bog Creeper. After searching a lot more finding nothing (I wanted a fitting name for the effect), I stumbled upon Xanzith the Everlasting, so I went with it. And that's how the card came to be, and it's not inspired by Patches the Pirate.
Jolt and Zenith are my personal favourites out of the bunch.
Props to Tel'Dorei Spellcaster and Blessed Martyr. They're simple but, still, pretty good.
Blind Oracle seems too overpowered for a common card considering it's a recurring effect, in my opinion. Maybe it's nitpicking though; it does have a cool effect.
Murlhouse looks fun. Seems that the Murloc-cosplayer cards are all the rage right now (What's next, Finvannas Waverider?).
I can't figure out if people see my card as a troll/meme entry
I didn't interpret it as such. It reminds me a lot of Echoing Ooze, which is frankly probably a better card. It's also similar to Djinni of Zephyrs, which is also probably a better card. Not that having a 3rd option that falls into this category is a bad thing, I just have a hard time imagining how it'd be used, realistically.
As a deathrattle, it's difficult to trigger and get value. If you play it, and immediately buff him, your opponent will likely try to remove your other minions and then kill Xanzith, resulting in 0 value. Alternatively, you buff xanzith yourself and then kill him yourself. You've ensured that you got value out of the deathrattle... but since you're killing him without attacking, you're not really getting value.
Djinni of Zephyrs has similar problem (at least until the potion of madness charge exploit was discovered). Your opponent will likely kill the Djinni before you get value. Before the recent exploit was discovered, the only way to play djinni was to leave him unbuffed, and force the opponent into calculating the risk/reward of killing it or letting it live.
Your card could be played in that kind of situation, drop it unbuffed, make your opponent remove it... except its only a 1/1 and the cost of removing it is extremely low, while the risk of leaving it alive is very high.
The entries this week are... something. I'm voting for Kalecgos, Blind Oracle and Esmerelda though, I really like the dragon synergy in Mage and Blind Oracle has a really cool effect and is an interesting early game priest card.
Oh, ho, ho! nobravery plagiarizes a card again! I'm sure he'll come up with an excuse for why his card is okay but all the other people he criticized for coming up with ideas similar to previous ones weren't.
The only ones in here which recieved more than 2 minutes of thinking are Lightning Rod, Blessed Martyr and Tooth for a Tooth.
Zenith is actually the coolest, but should have restricted going face with it.
I guess I should have just submitted my One-trick Pony (Hunter Beast) with the same effect as Martyr but a Battlecry for a shot at finals even tho casting random Secrets nullifies what makes them interesting. Am I missing the flavor between a Martyr and a Secret? And my OCD is triggered by the lack of a period on the card.
What happens with Avatar of Sar. and an enemy Dreadsteed?

Jolt is just a very nice card. That and Xanzith the Everlasting of course ;)

My Entry for this week's Card Design Competition - Season 8.16:
There's a lot of memes this time. I'm for Jolt, Blind Oracle, High Priestess Ishanah and Weissmerggl the Wild.
Wished to be pink.
Then did.
Then fired myself.
Then did again.

Cogg-Saron is an obvious troll entry with that art. How can you guys have taken something seriously that someone badly photo-shopped as a joke?

I really like the mechanics of Kalecgos and Blind Oracle.
