Seems comparable to Guardian of Kings to me and that card sees some play, so I could see it in some control warrior decks.
Guardian of Kings is a 7 drop, of which only Baron Geddon and Gorehowl sometimes sees play in Warrior. If this was a 7 drop then maybe it would see play, MAYBE. But, it is a 6 drop and there are far better options for Warrior in that slot. The only was I see this being viable in constructed is if a midrange warrior evolved. I can't see this making the control deck better. I would much rather have Sylvanas Windrunner , Cairne Bloodhoof, The Black Knight or even Hogger (thanks Sjow) for my 6 drop. I would never drop any of those 6 drops to add in Shieldmaiden. This being said I think it's a decent arena card that will frequently be picked. This card will be bad in the current Warrior decks.
It doesn't always have to be about top tier play, you know. This card provides a viable budget option to the 6 mana legendary set and opens up the control warrior archetype to people who can't currently afford ALL of the best legendaries. And, as previously stated, it will be better than those legendaries in some situations and metas. Ask any druid player how useful a 5/5 body and 5 heal can be when playing against hunter, even at 7+ mana.
^This. I'm missing lots of the control warrior legendaries and this would go a long way towards making a budget deck. Probably only OK at ranks 15 - 10, but that's OK for me.
Guardian of Kings has 5-6 for 7 mana and heels for 6 health. So this card acts similar, but it have a better value and +5 armor is better then heal for 6 health.
This card is pretty underwhelming, but it's being underrated for Constructed. Think smart, people: you'd actually want to run this over Cairne, and even Hogger, in an aggressive meta filled with Black Knights like today's. You'd sub it in when you run into entire patches of Hunter hell. It kills everything relevant and, because of the battlecry being able to decide the game in this matchup, you wouldn't mind it being hit by Freezing Trap.
You still don't really want this for Arena though. You'd rather have Boulderfist Ogre any day.
its tempo card and it's really good honestly... it wont replace Shield Block in control warrior decks..but hopefully new tempo warrior decks will emerge and this could be very solid card honestly..thanks to Shield Slam..you can remove pretty big minion and have solid body on the table...not bad..not bad..
I actually like it a lot. It's actually a good card to side in for the 6 drop legendaries and is a good tempo card combo'd with Shield Slam. I could easily see replacing Cairne or Hogger for this.
I'm surprised how much people hate this. Ancient of Lore costs one more and heals 5, and people say that's one of the best cards in the game.
The fact that Ancient of Lore is one of the best cards in the game has almost nothing to do with the fact that it can heal 5. You cannot compare it to this card.
Seems pretty meh to me. It would absolutely need to be played with Shield Slam to even be worth consideration in constructed. Might be decent in Arena...not great though.
I knew someone would mention that Ancient of Lore can't be compared because of being a different class and having that Choose One ability haha. I'm just saying that armor is better than health, and for one less mana, this card should not be discounted so quickly.

Everyone is saying how they're going to drop Cairne for this, but with that substitution their decks will be SO MUCH WEAKER against Priest and the mirror in exchange for a marginal upgrade in matchup where your critical turns are 2-4.
Also, Shieldmaiden trades with Loatheb while Guardian of Kings doesn't, so Guardian is till better imo (the fact you can heal above 30 with Maiden is irrelevant, as if you are above 24 when you drop one of these two the life gain doesn't matter).
People play shield block. In a way this is a shield block that is drawing you a 3 mana 5/5 that you must play this turn. It's a solid card looking for the right deck.
BUT there is a card called recombabulator!! Imagine this scenario: it trades with sludge belcher then recombabulator makes it a sylvanas, cairne or any off the other great 6 drops. This generates insane amounts off value card wise and you will most likely win the game..... you guys have no clue what the potential off some off these cards are:/ This is a shield block + a minion that trades well with all minions in the current meta. what cairne docent do is trade well and its weak to silence so this card is a 100x better then cairns atm.

People also play Guardian of Kings in similar strategies. Shieldmaiden is much better.
To all the people comparing this as a better Guardian of Kings, try to remember that Guardian of Kings is not a very good card as it is. It fulfills the Paladin necessity of staying alive, but it is just a 5 mana card (neutral 5/6 body) and a 2 mana card (Holy Light) wrapped into 1. Paladin just doesn't have a lot of options.
Now even though Shieldmaiden is boring, at least it provides more card slot options. It doesn't have to be as good as Cairne of Sylvanas to play, since the 5 heal helps vs aggro or for Shield Slam.

good points, but post gvg i dont think that cairn will be a good card against priest ^^
and right now i would go for the swap in an instant seeing how often i face hunter, zoo and rogue in comparison to priest and the mirror.

this is quite off-topic tbh, we'll see how bouncing blade will change anything, not sure about this yet.

Slightly offtopic, but playing Cairne vs priest post GvG is borderline suicidal thanks to will-be-2-of Shrinkmeister.
Bouncing Blade can do it.
