The thing is, and this is something that blizz pointed this out, both for winaxe and innervate: they are basic cards. They are cards that you literally start the game with. As such, simplicity is the utmost key so that you can ease new players into the game. That is an extremely legit reason to not add extra, complicated mechanics.
.... I broke the quote box.
Anyway, at some point I think we need to stop treating new players like invalids that can't read. The tutorial is there to bring new players into the game, we don't need to Nanny them once they're in it.
Ok nerf. Win axe has been too strong for too long. The nerf leaves more design space for warrior. Which it needed (why do you think we've seen so many whirlwind and berserk effects?). Better nerf might have been 3 mana 4/2 can't attack heroes. 2 mana 3/2 weapon was too much tempo as a t1 or t2 play.
Jesus. I've been playing warrior since beta and this is the lamest nerf ive seen so far. All these years and NOW firey war axe is too over powered??! Warrior has WAAAAY too many essential 3 mana cards and this doesnt help that at all
I don't understand why people are complaining. Because of this change we will see other cards being play and it will be interesting to see what new Early Game warriors decide to develop, such as King's Defender.
It may not seem like that big of a deal, but the reason why so many cards don't see play is because of Auto Include classic cards like Firey Win Axe.
So Blizzard axed the axe. And the nerf is worse than this pun.
Seriously, if you want to keep specifically pirate warrior in check, why won't you nerf some pirates? No, they have to destroy the most iconic card for the class and then write a blog post telling people how the axe was good in conjunction with pirates and weapon buffs (both of which are only ever used in the pirate type of warrior)!!! And don't forget to double down by destroying one of the most iconic druid cards.
While I do not agree with the nerf at all, simply changing war axe to not be able to hit hero would barely impact the card at all. EVen pirate warrior mostly uses it to control the board early on, because the card is too efficient at doing that to not do it in most situations.
Of course they had to nerf it. Every time they tried to make warrior a curvestone class it got too good (pirate, dragon). Now they can make rage warrior the next expansion. Weeeh.
Of course the answer could have been NOT to make it a curvestone class, since we got curvestone up the wazoo. But hey, who cares about that.
Suffice to say that cheap weapons don't deserve to exist.
Look at what weapons have been broken: Old FWA, Old Spirit Claws and Jade Claws. None of them cost more than 2. Cheap weapons give far too much tempo for too little investment. If a weapon has better stats than a Divine Shield minion of the same cost, then it's too good.
My version would be 2 mana 3/2 weapon loose 2 durability if damages the enemy hero
it would stop aggro hitting face, cause the weapon would have only 1 charge for themthat way, and motivates them to make trades.
I know its a basic card and it should be simple, mostly blank, but i think it would be better this way, and not OP. (especially in pirate warrior).
But PW usually used the winaxe to do two things - buff their 2/3s, and keep the board clear so as to not lose their pirates. Doming with it was relatively rare, in my experience. I'm not convinced on the nerf, but we'll see what blizz do with the open design space.
FWA was an overpowered card which warrior was too reliant upon. The nerf will sting, but you'll adapt.
Yeah, I for one am truly looking forward to whatever new "vomit on curve deck" they'll make the next expansion now that they can make without being god-tier.
Of course, they could just not make vomit decks... but I realize that this is a very drastic design shift.

It's not fun when there's nothing you can play in your hand despite building a deck that's supposed to play everything in your hand because some idiot orc decided to set his axe on fire.

I would agree with that if it wasn't for the timing. Pirate Warrior has been annoying for longer than I want remember and they nerf it now that everybody complains about druid (and starts worrying about priest)?
If it was a nerf they had in mind for long time why the f**k they didn't give in the last expansion (not even a month old) some decent early drop for control warrior that would have compensate the loss of an invaluable tool for an already weak archetype? I can "adapt" because I have cards to do whatever deck I want from whatever class, but this is a spit in the face of the casual or FTP players they are so worried to "confuse" (and the ones that just like to play their preferred class).
The nerf is right (some text in the card like some extra armor wouldn't have been bad, thought), its timing and expansion's cards planning sucks and, in my opinion, shows there has been shortsightedness and carelessness in the long-term planning of the game.
I hate this nerf. I hate nerfs in general. But for my favorite card that has been around for so long its hard to swallow. The fact that its just bad King's Defender sucks so much I'd rather if they just move it to Hall of Fame instead. Leave it in Wild. I would rather have that than seeing old cards change all the time. Same with Innervate. Instead of making it Counterfeit Coin with different name they should have just moved it into Hall of Fame. Just ban the cards in standard but dont destroy them forever move them to retirement area where they can be played still by people who were almost attached to the cards. Its like nerfing Lightning Bolt in magic the gathering after I dont know how many years. Its been around for so long....
Whats next Fireball nerf?
Fireball might get a mana increase because of otk and because it is in every mage deck ever so sadly it might be next.

Can't Attack heroes is a 3 word sentence.
They ruined the card because of people that can't be arsed to read 3 word sentences.
Is that how Blizzard imagines players of card games? This isn't a sidescrolling platformer or a kart racer party game. IT'S a FLIPPING CARD GAME.

One of the most annoying cards in the game is now not nearly so annoying.
I approve this change.

At least the nerfed fiery war axe has better synergy with Forge of Souls (without floating mana). Always look on the bright side...

6 damage for 3 mana. That's quite enough.
