This deck aims to be on the aggressive side for a tempo deck and on the midrange side for a pirate deck. The idea is to use your weapons with your spells to clear the board then take advantage of the board control you have with your charge minions and your high attack threats like Frothing Berserker and Bloodsail Raider. Cards like Blood To Ichor and Slam have synergy with your weapons, giving them extra reach for board control. After turn 5 or 6 you'll hopefully have gotten in a decent amount of damage and controlled the board, at this point you go all face before the opponent finds their answers.
Please keep in mind the deck can have a high learning curve, so don't be too quick to judge. It can be difficult to know how to juggle your weapons and this is something that will only come through experience. Furthermore it's often difficult to know when you should board control and when you should go face. If you've played Midrange Hunter before, try and make the decisions like you're playing that deck.
General Mulligan Tips:
Keep: N'Zoth's First Mate, Fiery War Axe, Sir Finley Mrrgglton, Southsea Deckhand (versus non-ping classes), Bloodsail Raider, Loot Hoarder
With appropriate other cards (generally ones in the list above) keep: Blood To Ichor, Upgrade!, Bloodsail Cultist, Dread Corsair
And obviously if your curve looks amazing, keep it all.
I've had a few questions about replacements for Captain Greenskin (which is very understandable, I'm not even sure why I have the card). I think the best replacement is Leeroy Jenkins but if you don't have that my general advice would be to just put in a 'good' card. Here's some suggestions with a kind of ranking:
1. Fierce Monkey
2. Bash
3. Azure Drake
4. Obsidian Destroyer
Worth noting that if you go with Fierce Monkey this deck only costs 1320 dust!
Sir Finley Mrrgglton stuff:
If you don't have the card you can replace it with Flame Juggler.
For Hero Powers obviously the top three are Hunter, Mage, Warlock. Hunter wins if your hand is amazing, Mage wins if it's decent, Warlock wins if it's average or worse, to try and generalise it. Choices between the others are dependent on the situation and normally fairly easy to see which benefits you most.
Storytime:
I actually ended up playing Xixo with this deck. He was playing Druid and opened up with The Coin, Innervate, Innervate, Fandral Staghelm, Power of the Wild. I Fiery War Axed down the Panther, he played Druid of the Saber and kept it stealthed. I played Upgrade!, Dread Corsair, Dread Corsair, Loot Hoarder and we both ended up with one card left in hand on turn 3. Just wanted to share that insane opening from both decks. Most importantly, I won. :P
If you've enjoyed the deck please give it an upvote.
It needs an update... King's Defender is a poor choice to be honest and having 2xN'Zoth's First Mate hurts consistency in the later game. I replaced them with a Leeroy Jenkins and an Elise Starseeker to have an answer to some fatigue decks I keep seeing. Here is a good example where she helped though the opponent wasn't a very good one(he played shieldslam with no armor at some point) https://hsreplay.net/replay/zmvrTgbgPDpCYmT4BT3jeG
Alternatively I can see Malkorok working in this deck instead of King's Defender.
Later game? Are you kidding? If you haven't win by turn 8-10 you'll most likely lose the game. This deck doesn't have late game. Elise Starseeker is fit for control decks and this one is the exact antipode of control. What rank is that match? It has nothing to do with how this deck should roll. Malkorok is way to expensive and inconsistent to be included whilst King's Defender is another fiery win axe.
Late game*
Well get paired vs control then and lose ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ If you don't understand that including a card that has synergy with taunt minions just to include a more expensive Fiery War Axe is a bad idea then I have nothing further to discuss with you mate.
So be it, mate, don't discuss with me, but I`ll leave you with this one:
What would you rather have in your hand until turn 7 - Malkorok or King's Defender ?? No need to answer, really.
Being 1 mana more expensive I prefer hundred times having an extra fiery win axe than Malkorok (proccing Spirit Claws or Light's Justice) But, hey, if you're into slowing your game down and RNG - that's your card. Cursed Blade to fireball in the face is always a nice way to finish a match.
Completely agree it needs an update. Quite frankly I'm not sure this deck really works much at all any more. I would say that, I think, Elise Starseeker is a very bad card in this deck.
I don't have Upgrade!; replacement?
Not sure there really is one, to be completely honest.
There isn't really a "replacement" for Upgrade!. It can do something like turn your 5/2 reaper with 10 dmg potential into a 6/3 with 18 dmg potential for one mana. And there's a bunch of weapons in this deck so it fits extremely well. If you intend to play this (or some other Pirate variation) I would recommend crafting them. But if you don't want to or don't have the dust yet you can try to put in some solid cards like Fierce Monkey or Flame Juggler. Just be aware it'll likely result in a (somewhat) weaker deck overall.
Any advice for facing control decks? I find that control warriors are kind of a joke to face, I have stomped them every time I come across them so far, but control mages have proven particularly deadly to me. They seem to completely shut down my ability to gain board advantage, and by turn 6 or so it is essentially a loss as they begin to swamp the board with stronger minions (making me wish for a Brawl!) and I have very weak card draw. Although I don't have a ton of experiences like this, I can't help but wonder if I'm just getting ridiculously bad luck with draws when facing them or if there's some way that I can improve my style or deck. Control priests seem to do the same for me. Control paladins can get a leg up, but it usually requires me getting a bad hand at the start.
How good is this deck? Is it worth crafting the few cards I need?
Extremely confused about 1 thing, when do you play around AOE? Especially lightning storm which can hit so early. I never know what to do, if i try not to flood the board it becomes really hard to deal enough damage fast enough, if i flood the board it gets wiped.
My general AOE advice for a deck like this is to ask yourself: Can I win if they have *insert AOE here* in their hand?
If the answer is no then you have to play like they don't have it, and lose if they do.
If the answer is yes then you can choose to play around it if you feel it's likely they have it.
This goes mostly for hard AOE like Brawl, for set damage AOEs like Lightning Storm (not quite set) you can design your trades and your plays to play around it while still advancing your board.
I'm missing 1 king defenders and 1 Blood for Ichor, subbing them for 2 Arathi, this ok? Are there better cards?
Nevermind! The Arathi are too slow and worthless because usually you already have a weapon equiped and you don't want to replace it with a 2/2.
I dusted an epic and crafted the King Defenders, then i replaced Blood for Ichor with Gorehowl, i figured it'd be a nice finisher especially if you are able to get +1/+1 on it!!
ok another update, gorehowl seems to be too slow, you either won or lost the game by the time u can use it, will replace with heroic strike
Ok so I went ahead and made this deck and I guess I just suck with it? Went 5 - 10 tonight for a 33% win rate. Though I do not have Leeroy so that might make a difference. Added the Monkey in his place. I'll try and craft Leeroy next or if i'm lucky i'll open him up soon. I'm due a good legendary. Hearthstone has been trolling me hard. Last two have been Millhouse and Nat lol... In any case i'll be giving this deck more time. Perhaps i'm just playing it wrong? I found that if I don't have complete control by turn 6 it's pretty much over.
So i'm 12-21 (36% win rate) now. Perhaps this deck is good at the ranks closer to Legend but I'm struggling pretty bad with it. Went from rank 15 to 20. I've found that it's highly reliant on RNG at the start and if I don't draw what I need exactly when I need it i'm dead by turn 7. On the positive side this means fast matches at least.
I'm not sure what advice I can give you if you're struggling that much. I'd advise you to watch good players but there won't be much footage for this deck. Perhaps watch people play midrange hunter (particularly from before WotOGs) and base your trades (or not) on that style. Probably just not a playstyle you mesh with.
Thanks. I'll check out those videos. Regardless I'll keep playing your deck as I like the pirate theme and it's a lot of fun and that is what it's really about anyways in the end.
Im running this decks and now im at rank 12, from rank 18! I made a few changes.
-1 Captain Greenskin +1 Fierce Monkey (really good against zoo)
- 1 King's Defender +1 Spellbreaker (helped me a lot against taunts and buffed cards)
-1 Blood to Ichor + 1 Mortal Strike (won a lot of games)
