This deck aims to be on the aggressive side for a tempo deck and on the midrange side for a pirate deck. The idea is to use your weapons with your spells to clear the board then take advantage of the board control you have with your charge minions and your high attack threats like Frothing Berserker and Bloodsail Raider. Cards like Blood To Ichor and Slam have synergy with your weapons, giving them extra reach for board control. After turn 5 or 6 you'll hopefully have gotten in a decent amount of damage and controlled the board, at this point you go all face before the opponent finds their answers.
Please keep in mind the deck can have a high learning curve, so don't be too quick to judge. It can be difficult to know how to juggle your weapons and this is something that will only come through experience. Furthermore it's often difficult to know when you should board control and when you should go face. If you've played Midrange Hunter before, try and make the decisions like you're playing that deck.
General Mulligan Tips:
Keep: N'Zoth's First Mate, Fiery War Axe, Sir Finley Mrrgglton, Southsea Deckhand (versus non-ping classes), Bloodsail Raider, Loot Hoarder
With appropriate other cards (generally ones in the list above) keep: Blood To Ichor, Upgrade!, Bloodsail Cultist, Dread Corsair
And obviously if your curve looks amazing, keep it all.
I've had a few questions about replacements for Captain Greenskin (which is very understandable, I'm not even sure why I have the card). I think the best replacement is Leeroy Jenkins but if you don't have that my general advice would be to just put in a 'good' card. Here's some suggestions with a kind of ranking:
1. Fierce Monkey
2. Bash
3. Azure Drake
4. Obsidian Destroyer
Worth noting that if you go with Fierce Monkey this deck only costs 1320 dust!
Sir Finley Mrrgglton stuff:
If you don't have the card you can replace it with Flame Juggler.
For Hero Powers obviously the top three are Hunter, Mage, Warlock. Hunter wins if your hand is amazing, Mage wins if it's decent, Warlock wins if it's average or worse, to try and generalise it. Choices between the others are dependent on the situation and normally fairly easy to see which benefits you most.
Storytime:
I actually ended up playing Xixo with this deck. He was playing Druid and opened up with The Coin, Innervate, Innervate, Fandral Staghelm, Power of the Wild. I Fiery War Axed down the Panther, he played Druid of the Saber and kept it stealthed. I played Upgrade!, Dread Corsair, Dread Corsair, Loot Hoarder and we both ended up with one card left in hand on turn 3. Just wanted to share that insane opening from both decks. Most importantly, I won. :P
If you've enjoyed the deck please give it an upvote.
I have a very similar deck where i tried literally that exact same thing. I would discourage it as that clear turn did not usually come timely enough with the correct combination of cards to be effective. When it did work it was not enough to seal a win. Just enough to delay the same result. When winning I won... when losing it still lost... usually.
Yo i really like the deck but most of the time im off 5 or 6 damage lethal would u suggest putting leeroy jenkins in the deck for finishing the opponent ?
Give it a try. Might be that you need to focus on face that one turn earlier.
Had a crazy winstreak when i started to rank 4, now im struggling, think i need a mulligan guide bro :)
Unfortunately you'll have to wait a bit. I've got Algebraic Geometry and Galois Theory exams on 2nd and 3rd. If you scroll through the comments though you'll be able to find advice I've given for when other people have asked. Hope that helps a bit.
Fair enough, got the hang of mulligans eventually just took some practice :) turn one first mate into coin and cultist is just beautiful, blood to ichor is also great if you have coin(are going second) great 1 mana clear for those pesky 1/3 troggs if you don't happen to get a war axe
Mulligans are less straight forward than most decks, and I think the primary reason the deck has a high learning curve. Jamhearld is a better resource, but since he is distracted I can tell you that for myself combos are the key for my strategies. The games where I struggle are also the games where the tempo breakers are not present in the right order.
That game story where he played xixo only was made possible by him having a combo that could worked off each other to break a clearly strong early move. I suspect the following moves were also generally supportive of that momentum.
That is just my opinion.
That's 3rd confirmed Legend. Glad you had success and that you agree with my outlook on the deck.
sorry to keep bothering you. Also struggling with card draw, keep running out of steam by turn 5, and if my board gets cleared i'm screwed.
That's kind of how the deck plays most of the time. Generally it looks more like turn 6/7 when you run out of steam and a similar turn when you win. As for board clears given the general 3+ health of the minions you should be able to play around some board clears reasonably. One thing I tend to do as I go into later turns to try and make a board clear look less good is trade away minions over using weapons, especially when a weapon would be overkill. For instance if I have a 4 attack weapon by turn 5 I'd trade away a 2/1 and a 1/1 to kill something with 3 health over using my weapon. The advice I gave you for Brawl goes for other board clears too. Remember for a control deck to win they have to draw the one or two right cards, for us to win we have to draw basically any of our cards.
Thanks a lot man.
Loving this deck. Having MAJOR issues against control warrior though. Any suggestions?
It's a tough match up. The key is to apply as much pressure as you can early before Brawl is a threat. The you have to make the decision: Can I win if he has Brawl? If the answers no you just keep on playing into it and hope he doesn't have it, if the answers yes then you play around it and bait it out.
Thanks!
What can i replace sir finnley with hes the only card that i dont have please ?
Bash or Flame Juggler would be my advice (assuming you don't have Fierce Monkey), possibly Sparring Partner if you want to be edgy.
How about a mortal strike ?
Don't think it fits but feel free to give it a try.
This is - just my opinion - the best deck I've played in wotog so far. I mean, there are many interesting cards / decks out since the end of april, but this deck is very smooth to play, even as an face deck. I like it a lot, only the frothing are cards I will consider for change, bash is an interesting option. Nevertheless, the deck works good, even without mortal strike and heroic strike, which i saw few days ago in a similiar deck though.
Yeah, they tend to be in decks which go face from turn 1. Since this deck plays more like Midrange Hunter or Zoo where it goes face from about turn 5 onwards I didn't think they suited the deck.
