Went crazy with replacements.
The deck desperately needed things on board against its harder match-ups, spell power is incredible both early and late game, sheepy sheepy spell is more expensive in some situations, but infinitely more reliable than forbidden flame.
Rag is disgusting in the meta, but also the card I think can be replaced the easiest (flamestrike for aggro heavy meta, yogg for that comfy "oh crap" play to miraculously go from losing hard to winning hard).
Sylvanas is value, pure and simple. Faceless summoner is another value card and since we don't run yogg or double tome, I felt he played much better than thaurissan.
There is so much you can do with tempo mage now, it's easily my favorite deck in the game. Go crazy and enjoy!
Update 5/31/2016: replaced sylv with 1x flamestrike for early ladder climb. May consider going back in a heavy control meta, but flamestrike deals with all but like... ramp druid these days, so it may be a permanent deckslot.
Update 6/18/2016: replaced tony with yogg. may replace poly with 2nd faceless summoner. Hurts our fatigue match-up, but increases our chances against pretty much every other deck.
Update 8/13/2016: Will be running more spells for early wins at the sacrifice of late game. Please don't play flamewaker without at least 2 spells to work with. I also foresee malchezaar being a wildly unfair card. May even consider elise in the deck, will have to test all of these changes of course. Turns out malchezaar is fun, just not... good. So I run faceless summoner for turn 6 curve.
Update 9/19/2016: Yes... I still update and play this deck on ladder heh. Thalnos in place of 1x mirror image as spellpower is OP and we have enough answers for early aggro. It gives us answers to druid ramp in the form of double spellpower minion arcane blast. I am currently rocking firelands portal in place of flamestrike. The meta just isn't as demanding of aoe and board presence on curve mid-late game is OP in tempo mage a la faceless summoner results. Also Babbling Book is OP and you shouldn't trust any current meta snapshot tempo mage deck that doesn't run 2 of them.
Update 9/28/2016: With Yogg's nerf announced, I don't believe we need a slew of spells, so I've done away with ethereal and yogg for 2nd faceless and flamestrike. I honestly don't quite know what should go in yogg's place, but we played him for an emergency board clear. Rag could see play again, since his effect is "quick" and could get rid of the odd large minion, but... who knows?
Hey! Quick questions - replacement for Ethereal Conjurer? I don't wanna buy LoE now, since I'm a new player. Besides that, I've got everything.
Any room for Arcane Giant ? I'm really looking forward to playing that one and Tempo Mage seems a good deck to it in.
ethereal conjurer is the best card you can run for its particular spot. I suppose you could try faceless summoner, although I was thinking of replacing flamestrike with it, but flamestrike deals with so much in the meta right now. Arcane giant feels too slow for the deck, especially if you draw it early as it'll ONLY be dead in your hand until it's cheap enough to put on the board and do whatever else it is you wanted to do that turn.
I'm sure more and more people will test arcane giant to get the truth behind the card's potential though.
Note: I'm still fairly new so take everything with a grain/handful of salt.
This is by far my favorite deck! I really like the updates and think that you've hit a sweet spot between spells and minions. I'm still running Tony (since I have anything else), but I believe I'm going to drop him and put in something else. I don't have Rag or the Karazhan expansion yet
I flew by the early ladder and was just about to hit 15 when I began having problems. Mostly against control I believe. Any suggestions?
Yogg tends to do very unfair things to your opponent in the control match-up. An incredibly powerful card. Don't be afraid to push face damage too, especially against fatigue warr as they tend to be somewhat of a hard counter against the mage class.
Let me get your thoughts - Since I don't have Babbling Book or Malchazar yet, I'm still running Faceless Summoner, Polymorph, and I got rid of Tony and put in (don't laugh) Arch-Thief Rafaam for some end game reach. Was that a bad idea? I was honestly not getting much value out of Tony since the spells I'd use to compliment him are usually spent on Flamewalker (which I'm pretty sure is the best card in the game!)
I think replacing tony is a good idea since the meta doesn't really favor him anymore. Arch-thief doesn't fit well in this deck, because it takes two turns of only playing him and the card you get from him to do anything. I don't think the body is worth it. If I knew what cards you had I could give you some tips, but since yogg's effect is immediate, he's the best late late minion for this deck. PM me if you need any other tips.
Ran into problems as well (rank 16 with 3 stars - went 10-2, then 12-8, but it's getting late and I've played for some time, so I blame being tired). It seems I can dominate early game, but lack a punch in the late game. I've put Pyroblast and Emperor Thaurissan, since Malchezar hasn't been released yet, and I don't have Ethereal Conjurer.
Yogo is a beast and wins games, but there seems to be little this deck can do against control (C'Thun control, to be specific). Generally this deck is very solid and plays nice, but I think it could use swapping Babbling Book for some card drawing minion.
c'thun control warr i assume you're talking about? yeah, if that's being spammed on your ladder meta, you should definitely play a different deck. Ctrl warrior in general is a hard counter to mage.
I've made some changes. Since I ran Thaurissan instead of Malchezar, I've swapped him and 2x Babbling Book and use Pyroblast and 2x Arcane Giant. That, and 1x Water Elemental with 1x Acolyte of Pain. Had more success against Warrior, but still need some testing.
Isn't it better to use Bloodmage Thalnos in lieu of Cult Sorcerer?
Also, I strongly advise to keep two Polymorph since it's the best way to deal with Sylvanas Windrunner (which I feel every single deck is running right now lol)
Two polymorph is too clunky and I use cult sorc because it trades well, provides spellpower, and pours on damage better than thalnos, which just provides spellpower and a card draw.
Super srs and super fun deck and it wins a lot. yogg saved my ass a couple of times.
I was missing an arcane blast since i've only crafted one so i switched in sylvanas and the deck is working nicely. Also thought about including harrison jones instead.
Sylv works kind of like a tech card, so she can be switched out for whatever. I'm even considering taking out polymorph for more board presence. The only "tech" card I don't think I'll be replacing is flamestrike. Just does too much work against decks we already have a positive match-up against.
Weird, the deck is legend worthy. Only a few cards difference from sjow's. I guess what you have to realize is that not every deck works for everyone and getting a 60% win rate all the way to legend is very hard to do.
Have enough dust for Sylv or Rag but not both, which is more important to the deck? Currently have subbed in a Thalnos and a Flamestrike for them.
unless you've got another deck with a specific legendary you don't have, sylv is used in tons of decks even compared to rag in this meta, so she's prob the safest craft.
i realize now i look a little douchey replacing sylv for flamestrike whilst keeping rag in, but I assure you those three cards are all relatively interchangeable.
Also play tempo mage, rank 5. But a little bit different deck. A heavier one. Have a question.
Any advise against NZot/control Priests? Feels like they always have answers: entombs and SWD against big guys; aoes vs early game minions; these ladies that steal flamewakers...
