Mulligans:
Backstab, 1Deadly Poison, Goblin Auto-Barber, SI:7 Agent (2 if u have coin), Earthen Ring Farseer, 1Fan of Knives, Preparation if u have any spell to follow up and need the tempo
Gameplan:
1. Try to reduce the enemy early board state as much as u can
2. Try to get turn 4 Preparation, Sprint
3. Combo Lethal
Tipps&Tricks:
Southsea Deckhand only has charge WHILE u have a weapon equipped and should only be used as a finisher or a worst case clear.
Try to keep 1 Deadly Poison for Assassin's Blade it gives u an insane midgame powerspike.
Violet Teacher is the key midgame-board-pressure card. When your aiming for lethal it can be reasonable to sacrifice it so the apprentice wont fuck up your Tinker's Sharpsword Oil
Try to use max. 1 Blade Flurry for early removal because this is your winning conditions (This doesnt count for aggro decks such as pally where its enough if u just outvalue him and win on the long run)
Against Patrons combo druid freeze mages etc make sure u save Loatheb to stop their combos.
Examples:
1.Patron warrior sets up turn 4 Death's Bite so he will follow up turn 5 with Grim Patron and Inner Rage ending with 4 patrons countering it with Loatheb he ends with 2 and potentially even trades the 5/1 so u only need to deal with 1
2.Freeze mage has Ice Block in play and sets Alexstrasza on u Loatheb will make him a max dmg of 14 with Fire Ball and Alexstrasza so u get 1 more turn to pop Ice Block maybe even clear Alexstrasza and follow up with lethal the following turn.
3. Drood gets into Lethal range u can deny his combo with Loatheb in the same second he also wins u board control and practicly gives u 2 more turns to get your combo stuff together
Matchups:
Patron - avg/easy
Control Warrior - Hard
Aggro Pally - avg/easy
Midrange Pally - avg/easy
Combo Drood - avg
Taunt Drood - avg/Hard
Priests - usually easy unless they get insane combos on deathloards and u cant answer
Face Hunter - avg
Midrange Hunter - avg/Hard
Handlock - easy
Zoo - avg
variations of DemonLocks - avg/easy
Substitutes
even tho Bloodmage Thalnos is a key card in any rogue deck many low budget players cant afford it. u can substitute it with Shiv keep in mind that Fan of Knives looses a lot of value and u might want to substitute it aswell
Violet Teacher pretty much equals Piloted Shredder so swap them the way u like
Goblin Auto-Barber took the spot of a 4-Drop in my deck creation so either throw in a Violet Teacher, Piloted Shredder or even Edwin VanCleef if u feel confident enough. Its just that u often waste too many cards trying to get value out of it or he just grows too big and is immediately silenced or BGH'd.
I concider Southsea Deckhand a key card in this deck as finisher but if u think u rather need more consistent early board pressure swap it with any 2-.3- or 4-Drop
Many people argue the use of Assassin's Blade its just personal prefference in this case it gives a nice power spike and increases the value of your buffs a lot can be removed by adding 4-Drops most likely
[TGT]
i replaced Assassin's Blade and Earthen Ring Farseer
Playtesting by Khristophesaurus with Sabotage and Shady Dealer because u often just dropped Farseer without actually healing anything and this might catch a buff with Southsea Deckhand
STAY TUNED FOR MORE
Shredder or Barber.
Can you please give us some tips on how you deal with face hunters?
Great deck btw, I love rogue, however most of my losses are against face hunter, which the ladder is plagued with.
Thanks :)
Be REALLY aggressive. You need guys on the board and you need them to go face as much as possible. Use your spells to deal with minions as much as possible and there is no shame in wasting removal like Sap on a 2-drop like Creeper.
the key to defeting other decks, is to play them urself, and discover their weaknesses. for handlock, u just need a lot of spellburst, so saving the bladeflurry and evis often wins u the game. kinda weird how the guide says handlock is easy, its about even, maybe rogue is slightly favoured. btw, handlock is just badass, so u shouldnt beat them =P
Save your Saps for taunts if you can. It's fine to face tank the first giant/drake they play, just try to avoid saping it. Don't bring them low enough in health for them to play moltens unless you have serious burst on hand, or you just don't perceive any other way to win of course. Don't overextend into Hellfire/Shadowflame. Try saving the Southsea Deckhand for lethal burst. Saving Eviscerate for lethal is something that's generally not possible. Most times you need to use it for removal.
This list should be at least 50/50 vs handlock I would say, probably favoured. Southsea Deckhand is really strong in this matchup but the lack of 4-drops brings it down quite a bit since you're really weak to hellfire in general.
Oil rogue is one of the hardest decks to play though, It takes a lot of experience to form a good game plan according to what cards you're holding.
The preps are kinda irreplaceable, but if you had to. I would go for a shiv and a cold blood.
this deck uses weapons and oil buffs to kill things so minions are often there just to give you some to oil on. leeroy vs southsea difference is 4 mana and he only gives 4 dmg for ur combo
Goblin barber is not great since you will almost never play him on turn 2 anyways, so I would replace him with another Pioleted Shredder.
Other than that it's a great deck :)
ive also beaten many paladins with coin weapon, turn 2 goblin auto turn 3 blade fury (not optimal blade fury but it gets rid of 5 things)
what about ?
- 1 Earthen Ring Farseer
+ 1 Violet Teacher
Hey nice guide! Thank you :D I am learning to play Oil Rogue, I think he is very effective in current meta. What do you think of using Captain Greenskin instead of Assassin's Blade . He will give additional weapon (hero power) durability and a solid 5/4 on the board. Also I am struggling with face hunter and priests. Hunter deals a lot of damage before I can set up my combo and with priests I usually run out of cards.
Thank you for answer. Will check you guide regulary.
Interesting deck and choice of cards, will try it and than see how it goes. :D
My list is the exact same except I run 2 Piloted Shredder , because its harder to deal with ( I swapped one Azure Drake for it), 1 Fan of Knives ( that is just personal preference) and I run an Acidic Swamp Ooze, because of the meta.
Can you get rank 5 or higher with this deck without thalnos?
Thank you. I will definitely keep trying then!
Hey Man,
i finally registered on hearthpwn, after using it longer than a year very frequently, just to upvote your guide
and decklist. None guide ever i´ve read till now explained the Oil-Rogue better than yours!
So props to you, and keep the good work up for me :)
This is really bad advice, those are both awful cards. Play another Shredder or Barber or a Teacher or even a Shiv over both of those.
It's actually really good advise if you are set on playing this deck without Thalnos. The key advise OP and countless others have made very clear is, like most legendaries in a deck no card can replace it. That's why it's a legendary. Kobald Geomancer is often substituted for Thalnos for the less fortunate trying to run rogue without Thalnos. Same cost, also adds the +1 damage to spells and it's a 2/2 over a 1/1 just doesn't have the card draw death rattle, but with Sprint and Fan of Knives there are certainly other opportunities to utilize card draw in your match. He also makes a good point on that without, it makes little sense to run Fan of Knives because it's pretty weak on its own. Loot Hoarder is another I've hard used in substituting. That one I would call a terrible substitute, but other Rogue fans out there really build their game off of card draw so that's not a bad sub for them and their play style.
I'm just confused how that was bad advise? Barber isn't bad but do you really need another with all the bonus damage weapon cards in here already? I'll give you Shredder bcz it's a great card, except keep in mind now you're taking an early game threat and moving it back to turn 4 and personally, even though it's apparently sacrilege amongst rogue players, I think violet teacher is not that good at all. Sure the 3/5 body is ok, but it's a turn four drop requiring a spell to activate it's useless ability, a 1/1 disciple. Mages are just having a real fun time literally shooting fish in a barrel with their hero power until they are bored and azure dragon followed by flame cannon end the violets useless run on board, and Paladins love to make their recruits hug it out with her little students. Shiv is good, but again without the early +1 spell ability, that's another one I think turns somewhat useless. Now to each their own, what works for some, certainly does not for others and vice versa, that's the beauty of HS is there really isn't a whole lot of bad advise you can give or receive, you just absorb it all and formulate your own ideas of what works.
It's bad advice because you can't substitute Thalnos for something that looks similar when both Kobold and Loot Hoarder are way lower in power level than the rest of the deck. Thalnos is irreplaceable but yes, you can play the deck without him. If you want to replace Thalnos, play good cards that work well in the deck but don't necessarily fill exactly the same role. Shredder and Teacher are both excellent choices and this particular list is already way too light on 4drops anyway.
As for the second half, are you really arguing that Teacher is a bad card in rogue? One of the strongest plays in this deck is turn 4 Teacher Prep Evis, or Teacher Prep Sap, or Teacher Backstab even. Especially consider that Control Warrior is your worst matchup and Teacher demands a Brawl on its own (or at least a Revenge + Shield Slam).
