Guide for Heroic Nefarian! Skips the Onyxia part of the fight!
Gameplan
Win by killing Nefarian in one hit which skips the Onyxia phase. Build a big taunt with buffs and constant healing. You'll usually want to start building the big minion when Nefarian can't kill it with what's on the board plus an additional 4 damage from his removals. Often, this will happen just after you Holy Nova his bone constructs or if he starts with normal minions and can start a Deathlord with Divine Spirit and Velen's Chosen. Use Mind Control Tech and Dark Cultist early to ward off damage. When you do have a big taunt established, playing Kel'Thuzad will stop the AI from attacking at all and you'll further be able to heal your big taunt. (Fixed in Karazhan patch) Use a big taunt with excessive healing/health pool or Kel'Thuzad with sacrificial minions to keep your board healthy until a one-hit-kill is possible. Either use Inner Fire on your big taunt or Lightwarden [/card](from [card]Light of the Naaru) to ready the final blow of this adventure.
IMPORTANT: Do not ever break Nefarian's armor unless it is a killing blow. Breaking his armor starts the Onyxia phase from which you will never be able to recover. For when Onyxia is defeated, Nefarian returns to the board and kills ALL of your minions. Keep Nefarian at around 1 digit's worth of armor since you don't want an accidental break from Holy Nova.
Early Game
Mulligan for early minions such as Mind Control Tech and Dark Cultist. The early spells, Holy Smite and Power Word: Shield, are also worth keeping if you start with an early minion. Lightwell may be a low cost minion, but it's far more important to keep this safe in hand until it can heal from behind your big health minion. Do what you can to survive Nefarian's early minions. If he plays his hero power for Bone Constructs, you may be in trouble. It's worth using Holy Smite and trading early minions into these to survive until you can clear them all out with Holy Nova. If he plays minions from his hand, you will likely be able to play early minions safely and get a Deathlord or other high health minions with buffs started easily. Always use your healing on your big health minion; it's survival is what will win you the game later.
Late Game
Continue to buff your big health minion. Save Holy Nova, if your taunt can afford it, for a turn when it will kill multiple Bone Constructs. Play Kel'Thuzad as soon as you are able to, ideally with smaller minions already on the board to trade into Bone Constructs every turn afterwards. Don't neglect to heal your big health minion when Kel'Thuzad is out. It's possible that Nefarian will kill your taunt or Kel'Thuzad with Shadowflame if you stop playing conservatively. Eventually, you'll want to get your big health minion well over 30 health and use Inner Fire to strike down Nefarian in one hit. Lightwarden can also be really powerful, but you'll have to buff its health as he'll probably kill it with lava or his other removal spells. Alexstrasza is also useful here to lower the damage you'll need for a one-hit-kill by 15, and will strike down multiple minions herself.
Other Considerations:
Since it's been a long time since Blackrock Mountain has come out (2 expansions and 2 adventures later), here are some options for other cards. Now that Naxx and GvG are also out of standard and must be crafted, there will also be ideas for replacements.
- Dark Cultist has fantastic value alongside Kel'Thuzad and even just for buffing Deathlord [/card]and[card]Lightwell. If you don't have Dark Cultist, Anubisath Sentinel or Spawn of N'Zoth can also trade into Bone Constructs while giving your other minions health.
- Velen's Chosen is an efficient health buff, giving 4 health at 3 mana. While it's a much more expensive card, Power Word: Tentacles is the same value, giving 6 health at 5 mana, the equivalent of Velen's Chosen and a Lesser Heal. (The spell damage rarely matters here)
- Light of the Naaru is a decent burst heal and provides a sometimes fantastic Lightwarden for the OTK. You can choose to run either Flash Heal/Darkshire Alchemist for the often necessary burst healing or Holy Champion for the extra OTK option.
- Deathlord is extremely important here, giving the best stats for a low cost of 3 mana. If you do not wish to craft one, there are a few possibilities. Try Mogu'shan Warden, Twilight Guardian (if you can fit in other dragons somehow), or Cyclopian Horror for weaker taunt cards. Or, try to use Sunfury Protector or Faceless Shambler on something for a more difficult to set up combo.
- Kel'Thuzad is no longer mandatory, but can still provide so much value in keeping Bone Constructs off the board (instead of passive in pre-Karazhan). If you must, I suppose you could run some other nigh-infinite value legendary like Hogger, Doom of Elwynn.
- Excavated Evil and Corrupted Seer are new board clears you could try.
- Brann Bronzebeard would get value here, if you have enough space.
- Justicar Trueheart (or even just Prophet Velen) could make healing the big taunt much easier.
- Fjola Lightbane and Eydis Darkbane have potential, gaining health from buffs while taking down minions for free.
Notes
This fight is very similar to the fight against Majordomo and Ragnaros from the second wing. Lots of strong minions will get spammed out by the boss and you'll need to be able to handle them accordingly. Fortunately, I think this fight isn't as bad. Holy Nova is already capable of handling the hero power minions without Velen's Chosen spell damage and Nefarian has fewer and more expensive removal cards than Majordomo. I even used almost the same exact deck as my other guide for Majordomo: http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/226305-heroic-majordomo-otk-priest. How funny that two major rivals should fall to the same trick.
This is the final boss of Blackrock Mountain. Don't expect an easy fight. I was lucky enough to win on my second try, but there will still be times when RNG strikes down a good start. Good luck!
Aaaaaat laaast, my card back has come along
Good deck, fifth try :)
Thanks for the deck! Second try!
second try!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice deck. Got him on my third try.
Thank you!
Didnt have KT so replaced with scaled nightmare and won with that, just buffed it up with valen's and was able to get it to do 40 damage in only 3 turns after it came out, this honestly just takes some luck and rng
I can confirm that this deck does work, and that the trick with KT and a taunt works too. he still played things, but never attacked. However, with that being said, this wasn't easy and did take me probably 15 tries to over a couple days. I didn't wanna burn myself out so I took breaks. It takes a lot of RNG to be truthful. I did a few edits to this deck, like replaced the sea giant with something, I forget what. But anyway, you just gotta keep trying. Here's my proof
So, right now I am 30-35 tries in with this Deck... I never hat the slightest chance to win. He swarms me with his minions and his hero power every time...
Two times I thought I had it. I somehow managed to get my Kel and a Taunt Minion on the board... Too bad that he just killed my Kel the turn after with two 4-Damage spells. The second time I managed to stay alive for quite some time. To do this I had to use every spell and heal at my disposal... Too bad that RNGod hates me and my Kel was my 5th last card... Of course my Divine Spirits to buff up my OTK minion were my 4th and 3rd last cards...
Every other try he just screwed me over with a shitload of minions and his hero power...
I don't know how this was working for you guys, but I just can't see any way in winning with this.
EDIT: Right after posting this long "rand" and feeling overly agitated I went back for another, last try for the evening..... DING! Got it!
Still it wasn't easy, but I managed to do it with Kel and a Target Dummy. Yes, he indeed cast spells afterwards and oh my got, I almost shit myself when I saw the Tail Swipe from which I thought he would target the Dummy with... Good thing is that I buffed up my Kel with Power Word Shield so THIS time he survived the 8 damage from spells! :D
I made some slight changes to the deck... for example I subbed in 1 Dummy and 1 Sunfury Protector. Can't remember the rest, wasn't too much tho. In the end, that fight was a pain in the ass, but now that he is defeated (which was the last heroic boss from all adventures that I was missing) I feel so relieved... :)
First try win. Though I did mess up and used Inner Fire too early on my Lightwell, by the time he was able to deal with my Lightwell, I had already set up the Kel'Thuzad + taunt block. He killed KT with his spells because I was careless and I had to go through the Onyxia phase but he was already losing health due to Fatigue. I reserved my Earthen Ring Farseers to get me through my Fatigue turns and a Deathlord to block incoming damage from his minions, buffed by Temple Enforcer. I somehow survived through all that despite my impatience and stupidity, which really says a lot about how great this deck is.
Taking into consideration the changes other people have made, I decided to swap out some stuff:
-2 Light of the Naaru (I don't have them)
-1 Sea Giant
+1 Chromaggus (He saved my butt by giving me extra cards for my Fatigue turns, luckily copying my Temple Enforcer and Earthen Ring Farseer)
+1 Faceless Shambler (Used to copy big taunt)
+1 Faceless Manipulator (Used to copy big taunt)
Thanks for this deck! Really glad to have the card back!

This deck is garbage. If you have the Deathlord out, he'll use all spells and minions to take it out long before you can ever get Kel'thuzad out. If you buff your Lightwell, you really have no defense against his minions. And Mind Control Tech doesn't help much, because you get his minion, which he will immediately kill
Thanks for help. Handled it in 10 12 try, which is OK. Sea Giant -> Chromaggus swap is definetely helping.
I want to do a warning, lets say Nefarian has 30+3 health and you have 24/24 + 6/8 + 12/2 on the ground. You may think that you can finish him off. Don't!. You need to finish him in one move, one minion's attack. Otherwise, you will see Onyxia, bla bla.
Btw, has anyone tried Target Dummy + Kel'Thuzad? Not for this encounter, but I wonder. Is AI really scared taunts, even his mobs on the ground can kill both taunt + KT?
After a few tries I took out a Circle of Healing, a Light of the Naaru and put in 2x Faceless Shambler. This increases the chances of keeping a taunt onboard. I would have done it first try after that but I mistakenly broke his armour forgetting you have to one shot him with one minion while he still has armour.
Remember if Kel'Thuzad resurrects a Faceless Shambler it will come back as a 1/1 with Taunt.
Thank you so much for this deck! It's still got the powah! XD Won with a 75/75 Deathlord, absolutely my favorite heroic boss fight to beat, hands down.
Very nice deck! rekt him on the second try with 68/68 deathlord (miss played on my 1st attempt)
Thank you for this deck! I won first try, and I even fought the sister. All I had to do is clear the board and then use Kel'Thuzad when I killed her and "set all presence aside"
Won with a 56/56 lightwell, because who needs taunts?
Deck worked like a charm on try four. I didn't have Sea Giant, so I swapped for Kodorider. That card and KT ended up being essential to my win. I buffed up the health for a Deathlord and used the rider to take out hero power minions while keeping the taunt healed until I finally drew Inner Fire.
