Big Spells Mage is wonderful! But even if this deals 3 damage for 5 mana it's really really good! At least against those pesky aggro decks.
3 damage is coming from secrets which every mage deck should have at least a few of.

This card has awesome ingame animation. Very cool effects!
"Whew, I was worried that Mage wasn't going to have enough AoE." -Nobody ever.
This isn't Joust. Joust is bad because you can get unlucky and lose to the opponent. You have complete control over the spell costs in your own deck. If you play 3 mana spells and higher, this will always be at least a 5 mana Hellfire that doesn't hurt you. In a Joust you could reveal a smaller spell than your opponent (hello Ultimate Infestation and lose the game because your spell did nothing.
You're comparing apples to oranges.
While I dont think this is garbage, I do think adding more rng (joust like) aos (or cards in general just look how many are in this set are rng) is good for the game.
I really think that Mage's AOE gets outclassed by too many other classes. Although it excels in single target removal because of Frostbolt, Fireball, and especially Polymorph, Flamestrike and Meteor aren't enough compared to Priest's Dragonfire Potion, which is 1 more damage for 1 less mana (albeit the damage to priest's own board is a downside, but against aggro, the 1 more damage and 1 less mana is really life and death difference) as well as Shadowreaper Anduin's battlecry. Even warlock has both cheap and extremely powerful AOE in Hellfire, Defile and uber-Twisting Nether, which beat mage's cards in most matchups. Having this new, fresh 5 mana (which is very cheap for mage) potentially 3+ damage AOE is honestly something I was really hoping for. This card could really help push Mage into the meta, because historically Control Mage has had a pretty hard time against aggro. Makes me sad that Potion of Madness is a Priest card, because Mage needs more anti-aggro tools right now. I think with the versatility of Mage's cards, we can do without Frostbolt in the 2-slot if it means better clears a couple turns later.
As if Mage needed more AoE...
Why not just run Flamestrike or Meteor and not have to worry about a conditional effect?
lets see.
1. It's cheaper
2. it can do more damage than either to all minions (expect Meteor's 15 single target damage)
3. You can build deck around (especially along with the new Dragoncaller Alanna
4. It's a blessing from random spell generators most of time for sure. I'm sure nobody expect people with only low cost spells are gonna complain.
there are downside too of course, like hitting own minions, and without deck build it in mind its very risky, but those aren't that big bother for Mage usually
Unholy Wrath
Oh dear control mages at high wins in arena will be even more annoying.
Hearthstone new Expansion: Kobolds and screw you minions
They really want mages to become spellcasters! It might be fun to play with casino for a while.
Brian Kibler, if you're there, Dragon Mage is back!
How? There are no mage dragon synergy cards.
Art is awesome!
"Hey, you know how mage has some of the best AoEs in the game right now?"
"Yeah?"
"Well, lets give them another one! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA"
