With the upcoming expansion and the highlander decks hype I am really close crafting this guy for my reno mage. But I never had that card so I couldn't test it so there are few things that bother me.
1. Since wording of the card is amphibious (to me) I am wandering do the price gets reduced for each damage dealt to your hero for the entire game or it is always reduced by the difference current/maximum health. For example: If I am at 10 HP (giant costs 5) then I pop Reno, does the giant costs 25 again or continues to be 5? Do heals ruin your discount?
2. If I have stacked armor, does the giant get discounted for the amount of armor burnt? The card says "damage taken" so my logic is it should work even for burnt armor. You take the damage. It's another question if it reduce your HP or your armor.
I'm open to any opinions on ncuding the giant in reno mage. I think ice block could actually make this card playable. If your IB is in the bottom of your deck.. well, f. But otherwise you can take the advantage. After the block is popped, you can combo it with whatever you want since it costs 0.
To answer both of your questions, no, Molten Giant does not work with heals or armor. Using the Priest Hero Power to heal yourself for 2 will increase the cost of this by 2 (but this can't cost more than 25). A better, more accurate text for this card would be "Costs (1) less for each Health missing from your hero". It used to cost 20, and back then, it was viable because it was a lot easier to reduce the cost down to a very small amount. Ever since it was nerfed in April, it's seen practically no play. I definitely would not craft this card.
Thanks, you summed it up pretty nicely. I just can't believe Blizz left unfixed such inaccurate wording. It is greatly misleading.
All the more reason to go back and fix the wording. Especially as the coming Awaken the Makers card will give your hero have a base line of 40 health if you can pull off its quest and put Amara, Warden of Hope on the board. Unless Blizzard fixes the wording they are going to get a lot of flak if Molten Giant isn't free at 15 Health (40-25)
I have an idear for this card!
They should made it a 30 mana 8 / 8. But instead it does what it reads! Since the heal you get, dosen't change the amount of damage your hero has "taken". So it gets reduced by taking damage, but healing dosen't lower the cost. And if that is to op, just make it 35 mana or something like that. Alteast make it playable!
That would actually be interesting to see and would probably bring that card back.
Does this get play up in the high ranks? I basically never see it when I play.
Such a well designed card that made your opponent consider whether attacking face was correct or not. Now they just attack face and burst you down before you can even play this.

Another example of cards nerfed into the abyss. I liked lifecoachs point. If it was that overpower it should have been in every deck. Currently you can consider yourself pretty much dead once you come close to 10 life.

It sucks that it got nerfed, atleast some of the solo adventures is easier now.
Molten Giant is an interesting card, but it’s too easy for players to reduce its mana cost to 0. We’re increasing Molten Giant’s mana cost to 25 to increase the risks players must take to get a free Giant. The changes to Force of Nature and Arcane Golem will make dropping to low health somewhat less risky as well, which helped spur this change.
I regret not having enough cards to play handlock when it was a thing.. well at least I played renolock with molten before it was nerfed .. that's something..
5 mana nerf is a LOT.. 2 would be enough to not kill it and keep it playable but blizzard thought it gonna be some kind of control meta without burst.. yeah cause all the burst in the game is savage roar and arcane golem srsly blizzard failed here big TIME

I have actually faced some handlocks still using this, it's not totally death card, I would say more like balanced now.
Still missing this card... Was this nerf really that necessary :(
Ever since the nerf, Holy Wrath has became more OP with two of these (Molten Giant) In your deck.
It used to have a chance OTK to a hero with 20 or less HP, now it has a chance to OTK a hero with 25 or less HP.
If Top 2 is in Tavern Brawl again, I recommend using this. After turn 1, you can guard with 1/1 characters, and when you get 5 mana, you can begin the Ultimate 2 Card Combo.
