Wohoo! I got through! Congratulations to everybody!

I want to jumpstart the discussion presenting some of the neutral cards I have already designed. However, I made a change that I don't know if it breaks the competition's rules. If I presented a neutral card as an epic in the previous phase, can I ower its rarity to rare for this one? I came up with a really strong concept that fits perfectly as an epic, but it is also a dragon and I don't want to clutter the rarity with the same tribe. Without further ado, my neutrals so far:

    • Chained Broodmother is based on the enslavement of Alexstrasza and later Karynaku by Zuluhed. He used the powers of the Demon Soul and his own to chained this powerful dragons, and force them to breed to create mounts for his Dragonmaw orcs. While this broodmother is "chained", she can't attack and will lay eggs, but once released with a silence effect she will no longer breed.

    • Doom Lord Kazzak is the commander of the Burning Legion's forces in Outland. As such, he leads his minions and oversees the battle, granting powerful boons to its troops. Meant as a situational card and a powerful Krul the Unshackled combo, he will otherwise be not very useful unless cheated out with Giant Anaconda, Barnes or Ancestor's Call.
    • Lantresor of the Blade is a half-breed, born of a draenei and orc pair, that fought its to end up becoming a very powerful blademaster and the leader of a mainly ogre clan. As such, he fights with reckless abandon, damaging everything that stands in his way but injuring himself too. As seen in this video: https://youtu.be/RX4r-kQUgYY ; if Lantresor attacks a 1-Health minion, the Whirlwind effect will trigger and kill the minion before the attack ends, and he will be able to attack again. This encourages strategy and careful thinking when using this card!

If anyone would like too, I would love a review of my Phase 1 submission, accessible from my signature! Good luck to everyone :)

Hey, I think your set was probably the best of the various 'outland' submissions. And honestly, that kick ass font in the banner really sells it.
You've set a tone immediately with that picture and text. We're headed to the outer fringes, extreme environments, things are going to get intense. There was another Outland set that took the exact opposite tone, the 'Rebuilding Outland' set. I hope that guy made it through, interesting contrast in theme and mechanics between your two sets.
And MAN, those are some intense cards. Doom Lord Kazzak scares me. It's neutral, it can be played in combination with any card in HS. Surely there is something insane that can be accomplished with this? Some kind of infinite wisp/buff combo? I want to believe. It's a card that requires a lot of due diligence on your end. Look hard for broken combos, you can't just say 'its 9 mana, you can't combo', look deep.
Unleash is also an INTENSE mechanic, with a well chosen name. I worry about it's power too, but I'm sure you can balance it is. It's less extreme than the Patches effect anyway. Coilfang Myrimidon is a powerful card, and a good place to start with the mechanic. I wonder if cards should ever be cheaper in their unleash cost? Also, it's not a mechanic that treats all classes equally. Shaman has obvious synergy with their 2 health totems, making the unleash trigger easier to accomplish. Cards like Tentacle of N'zoth find new uses, while effects like Baron Geddon become a liability. Decks like Freeze Mage and Mill Rogue have the least use for this kind of effect.
Unleash needs a counterpart. Something to get at the alien nature of your setting, the 'Beyond' part. Unleash captures the wild, the 'Storm'. Now you need a mysterious mechanic, something enigmatic or hidden, something unpredictable, random, a 'ITS ALIVE!!!' kind of mechanic.
Thanks a lot for the feedback and the kind words! Yeah, I wanted my expansion to feel really extravagant, with dangerous and outlandish places and a bit of humor here and there. I'll have to think about your suggestion, I felt really pumped with your description.
Doom Lord Kazzak is looking a bit dangerous right now, after someone mentioned the Arcane Giants combo. I'm feeling like it should probably be 10 mana. I really like the ominous presence it presents, like "Oh god, Kazzak is here, they are going to smash my face in", while having a very narrow margin for combo. I don't really want to nerf it much more without totally changing its effect because of that. If someone sees some broken combo I could use some advice on how to handle it. Right now, however, I feel like Alexstrasza -> Doom Lord Kazzak + double giants is not very different from other two turn kills.
I don't really now what you mean with unleash and the shaman class. However, the rest of your assessment is what I was looking for. It is a very powerful mechanic, but I will try to be careful with it. There are many cards with unleash costs greater than their own, it depends on the card's nature, but I felt like Coilfang Myrmidon was very interesting this way. If you ever want to play it proactively, though, it will be overcosted. My intention with the card in general is to make things more interactive, even when a super combo is approaching. Those archetypes you mention maybe don't like it, but there will be other things :)
Any words on my other legendary, Lantresor? I feel like it's a very interesting card, and powerful. I am biased, though.

Regarding your expansion, Dragonspiral, I like the general theme, but you may be setting up for a very specific theme. It centers around dragons, but you haven't showed us anything else. The war and story behind it is interesting and new, and sets the mood, but I guess there won't be only dragons in it. Shifting the focus to some other part of your expansion, maybe the undead allies of Galakrond or the taurens and elves helping this expansion's Ysera, would have benefitted the submission.

Your mechanics are cool, but I also think dragonhold is unnecessary or a gimmick to fit more text in a card. We don't have Elemental echo or Primalist for elemental and beast synergies. I would keep the wording as it is and simplify the cards you were planning with it so that the text is not too long. Dragongrave is also something so specific that it doesn't look like it needs a keyword. Something like "Summon all Priest Dragons that died this game" would be perfect for Alexstrasza Lifebinder, which is a really cool card otherwise. An N'Zoth, the Corruptor[card] for [card]Drakonid Operatives! I understand that you created these keywords to highlight the Dragon focus of this expansion, but I would try to move away from these and try to create something that could last for other expansions.

The other parts of your expansion are solid. Paradox is cool and simple, a stronger Battlecry that occurs only once per card pair. Double tribes are something that I've always envisioned for something like Cookie the pirate-murloc chef, but your take on the different kinds of dragons is original and interesting. I think this is one of the things that causes the monotheme of your expansion, however, but I'd keep it because I really like it.

    • Voidwyrm looks useful, but as I said I'd change it to "Add a copy of a Dragon that died this game to your hand". This way you could add discard synergy, and make it add a dead or discarded dragon to your hand!
    • Infinite Drake is promising, but I don't know if I'd change its stats. Compared to Polluted Hoarder, it is strictly better, and a dragon too. I don't whether to count its paradox as an advantage or disadvantage, though. It may end up being unplayable because you want to play other, more impactful, cards in the late game. It is interesting nevertheless.
    • Cherry Dragon is balanced, simple and fits very well with druid's themes. A very well designed card!

I look forward to seeing your neutral cards, it looks promising!

Imagining that this expansion is real and release. Doom Lord Kazzak is not a problem in Warlock. I don't worry about the wonky combo with Kruul, I worry about Miracle Rogue charging Arcane Giants into your face! Also, I understand your idea around Nether Drake, but the wording is rather weird in my opinion
Hmm, it's true that may be a problem. However, having the requirement of casting the full 12 spells and three cards in your hand when Leeroy Jenkins + Cold Blood*2 is so much easier to pull off makes me cautious. Any other combos I should be careful with?
Any suggestion for Nether Drakes wording is well received!

    • Broeck1's 'Showdown at the Battlegrounds': I like the idea of alliance and horde faction cards, but I really think they should all be neutral effects. If a card is limited by whether it's a class and a faction, the number of decks it fits into plummets. Can you really promise 2 viable decks for every class? Instead, maybe some kind of 'Take a Side' mechanic for neutral minions where they get whatever faction flag your neutral cards have. The Flag Carrier mechanic is a neat idea but I'd do a different take on it. The idea is for the flag to change hands repeatedly right? back and forth? Try to simulate that, make the flag bearers fragile but powerful. I love the idea of a capture the flag set. New win conditions?

Thanks a whole lot for your review! An honor to be amongst your favorites. I do have some questions. I do not quite understand what you mean by "they should all be neutral effects", can you explain? I was thinking about new win conditions, but they are so extremely hard to implement, any suggestions? Also, I might already have a concept idea on the 'Take a side' suggestion. See below, what do you think?

The 'Join a faction' mechanic will be implemented as a Choose one mechanic. The neutral cards that have this mechanic will all be gnolls and trolls (and maybe pandaran for certain classes).

This mechanic is really cool. The photoshop skills are showing too! However, I would steer away from trolls choosing a faction, other races like goblins, ogres, pandaren, arakkoa or ethereals are better suited for this. Winterax Defender may be problematic, I would change it to an effect that activates depending on your other minions. Something like "Join the faction of a friendly minion. If it's Alliance, gain Divine Shield. If it's Horde, gain +2 Health and Taunt.". In this way you avoid the Choose One similarity. I share the worry of having to divide class minions between the two factions, but I'll wait and see.

May I jump on the review train and ask for criticism too? I want to step up my game for the next phases :^)

Just by the way, this is Spell Damage, not Spell Power. Spell Power is in WoW and boosts the effects of any kind of spell, not just damaging ones, so I'd change this whenever you get the chance. If I had noticed earlier, I would've told you before the submission page closed :|
Also, Spell Damage interaction is present on Master of Ceremonies, it's just that like 90% of the player base doesn't realize it does or ever did exist.
Darn, I knew the rush was going to affect the submission in some way. It went completely unnoticed. I will remake the card if I get through.
The problem with Master of Ceremonies was, apart from having really bad stat distribution, that its mechanic wasn't supported. It felt completely out of place. This Nether Drake would be played with a dragon shell, and other cards that provided or benefitted from Spell Damage. For example

The next phase will feature neutral cards so, even if I haven't started working on any others, I would like some feedback on the neutrals I showed for this phase.
    • Naga Myrmidon is a simple example of how Unleash can be used to bluff and disrupt your opponent. You can pass turn 2 without hero powering to make your opponent decide whether they want to risk a 3/4 Taunt facing them this early. By playing around unleash cards, the game will be slower and will gain an strategy factor, rewarding the player that better assess risks. To lessen the burden of knowledge, I will limit the amount of unleash cards to 1 or 2 per cost, so that the opponent doesn't have to play around so many.
    • Nether Drake is a new take on the magic infused drakes (Twilight Drake, Midnight Drake). However, this time its power is based on your magic directly. Spell Power has been only used to date as a combo enabler (apart from the dreaded Spirit Claws), and in this expansion I want to make some cards that will synergize with it in different ways.
    • Doom Lord Kazzak, as the general in command of the Burning Legion's forces in Outland, provides a great boon on its soldiers. Meant to combo with Krul the Unshackled, it is a very situational but powerful card, having no direct impact on the board unless you cheat it out with Barnes, Giant Anaconda, or Ancestor's Call.
You'd better paste your keyword tooltip here so that we get to know how the mechanic works.
Damn, you are right. Here you are. Basically, if any of your minions or your hero is damaged during your opponent's turn and you have the mana available, the card is played. This means that battlecries happen too!

There are some entries that are definitely going to pass (Cogito, Broeck in page 4) but for us mere mortals we just have to wait. However, many of us just like to create new cards, and start even without knowing if we will continue in the competition. At least that's my case.

Probably it's time to discuss the next phase?

I haven't finished the neutral part of my expansion, but the Chair Millhouse synergy cards are almost done.

The only one I haven't decided yet is a warrior card, which should have something to do with 3-Attack weapons since that's the theme of warrior class in my expansion.

Also, that druid card which gives Millhouse +3/+3 might look strange (since Millhouse is actually Immune) but it fits into the druid theme in this expansion which synergize with 5/5 minions.

I think you might be pushing this synergy too hard. Half of your expansion's neutral minions mention Millhouse in their card text. It looks like everything in this expansion will be related to him, and in my opinion it seems forced. The mechanic of summoning and shuffling him is interesting, but I don't think it merits this kind of commitment. If you look at C'Thun, you only have around 16 cultists in an expansion over 120 cards and 40+ neutrals. If my memory doesn't fail, there are around 6 class and 10 neutral cultists. You are fitting 10 just in the neutrals, of which there are 21 in this expansion. Not trying to sound harsh, but I think you should open up some spots for other cards.

The next phase will feature neutral cards so, even if I haven't started working on any others, I would like some feedback on the neutrals I showed for this phase.

Is it bad that I already have 21 neutral cards to be judged? I can't wait to have them torn apart by everyone in the discussion - in a good way, of course. Sometimes you need that critical eye to tell you how broken something is, or just how plain uninteresting they find it. That's why I love these competitions, everyone competes but we all also help each other as well. =D

I think it is as good as it gets. Lots of work already done, lots of content to share!

With all the exciting stuff and rising tension and found my stress relieve; making some cards. I will probably use these if I make it to future rounds! :) Here they are:

Almighty card design guru's, what do you think of theseeee? Only respond when you are really bored and have too much time. Don't respond if your are not bored or have no time. Ok.

    •  Stray Shot:
This is a really cool card, and a very cool subversion of the general theme of spells that affect adjacent minions. I love things that interact with positioning, so this is my favorite of the three. However, I feel like something a bit less radical, like 4-2-4, might be better and more playable while keeping the balance.
    • Kael'thas Sunstrider:
Thevery definition of a must kill. This is probably very, very strong. You discover twice with Primordial Glyph, getting two discounted spells, for example. This is not taking into account damaging combos like the 12 damage mentioned by someone else. Upping its mana and stats to something like a 8 mana 6/6 may balance it a bit, but I'm very afraid of this card.
    • Kargath Bladefist:
I find this card somewhat interesting because of the combo abilities with charge or stealth minions, but it is a lot of commitment for a not so great reward. It is funky, and it is great when obtained from something like Forbidden Shaping or Atiesh, but I agree with you in that it would not be played. Maybe a strange OTK with an stealthed Flag Carrier and Sudden Genesis? That sounds really cool, actually.

I have come up with a mage legendary! What do you guys think? No neutrals yet, though.

Even if I don't pass this round, I really like this project. Now that I have finished the university course, I may even retake the Starcaller!

Nah, it's okay. Your submission is incredible. I really like how yor keywords have a simple concept but it provides a lot of strategy to the game. Being able to assess how beneficial will an enchantment be in a specific moment, or making choices based on mana expenditure are complex things with very simple roots, adding a skill factor to the game. In fact, Enchant is very similar to a keyword I designed for the adventure competition that took place a while ago - Amplify.
I especially like Living Combustion with the double usage it provides. It is a really cool and useful card that can't be obviously abused. Big fan!

You know looking back I wish we could've used a few more example cards as I feel like one of mechanics got the back shelf since I needed to show some features of the other. I think 6 would've been a better number to work with. Any thoughts on this?

I definitely agree, it's hard to showcase a keyword and some of the other themes you might have in a set in just 4 cards. I only really showed Embalm cards in my 4, when there are a lot of other themes going on in the set besides just the one mechanic.
I think showing more than 4 cards may have been better, but working with that limit was a fun experience for me. Expansions have many different mechanics, but the main themes can be shown with very few cards. For example, for Un'Goro you can have a card with adapt, a quest, an elemental and something like Volcano for flavor and you have covered a lot of the expansion.

Set in the remnants of a devastated Draenor, Outland, this expansion follows the adventures of expert businessman and engineer Boom Jr., who didn't follow in his father's footsteps and set out to explore and colonize this unhospitable world. He will meet the remnants of the Burning Legion, setting entire forests ablaze as they battle the few Illidari left to confront them. The enigmatic Netherwing will prove to be a reliable ally, along with the ethereals... if you can spare the coin. However, not everything is the same as it was when his father lived. The arcane energies that sweep through the floating isles have granted new abilities to their inhabitants, allowing some of them to shift through space and tear the fabric of the universe, unleashed in a moment's notice. Who will our young entrepreneur meet in his travels through Hellfire, Terokkar, Netherstorm... and beyond?

    New mechanic: Unleash (X)

Arcane energies flowing from the Twisting Nether have imbued some of the beasts and humanoids of Outland, granting them the power to appear in a moment's notice when needed. Spells can also be cast through the tears in time and space, surprising enemies and allies alike. This new mechanic allows some cards to be played automatically on your opponent's turn when a friendly character is damaged, if you have some mana available. If you are holding more than one unleash card, the most expensive you can afford will be played first. If there is any mana remaining, the next more expensive card will be played, and so on. The mechanic's tooltip is shown below:

    Demons

Outland is overflowing with demons, so a lot of them will appear in this expansion. Many more neutral demons, and class cards related to them for Warlock, Rogue and Warrior, will be released. Some of these minions will feature a brand new type of synergy, or, shall I say... anti-synergy? Demons generally despise other creatures, so texts like "Battlecry: Deal 2 damage to a friendly non-Demon minion" will not feel out of place on them, in exchange for more powerful effects or stats.

    Dragons

The Netherwing bring new dragons to the table with exciting new synergies to explore. Magic-based as they are, these dragons will grant you Spell Power or more spells, rather than pure brawn, when holding other members of their species. No more Priest dragons, though maybe we will see some in the Mage's arsenal...

    Arcane powers

The landscape is brimming with magic in Outland. So much so, that classes more traditionally focused on minions, like Hunters, will now get support for spell based strategies. Deterministic spell generation will feature heavily in this expansion, granting heroes new tools with which to battle each other

    And much more to discover!

Hello guys! Its been a long time since I last posted in this forum, but university these months takes its toll. However, I saw this competition and I just HAD to participate. I haven't decided on a theme or anything for my expansion yet, but I have been mindstorming some keywords. I only want to feature one, however, and I'm having trouble coming up with something that I really like.

For this Competition I wanted to come up with something that made both your opponent and you make choices. I based myself on things like secrets, Choose One and TES:Legend's prophecy, and came up with a new keyword and unearthed something I did some time ago.

Basically, a mixture between a secret and a minion, with a choice to make so that your opponent doesn't know what could happen. Instead of guessing how does your secret activate, scheme focuses on what will it do when activated. You know that your opponent's Darkspear Vanguard is going to activate the next time you attack with a minion, but do you attack with the big minion that may be stopped, or the smaller one and be completely neutralized? These are some of the first iterations on Scheme minions, so please focus on the mechanic itself and not them.

Trying to get some kind of activity during your opponent's turn, this is a mechanic I came up when thinking about how bluffs could work in Hearthstone. Risking yourself by leaving unspent mana by the end of your turn, you can turn the game upside down if your opponent doesn't realise what you are up to. It could also work the other way around, you bluffing a Naga Myrmidon by not hero powering on turn 2. This way, your opponent should weigh the advantages and disadvantages of attacking that turn. The main goal of this mechanic is to provide mind games and slow the game down. Remember that the cards are played, so Desperate Lightwielder heals you when unleashed, and the keyword can also be present on spells!

That's all for now! Let me know what you think about these ideas. Any suggestion or comment is well received!

Scheme: I had some trouble understanding it, because of the "on your opponent's next turn" seemed confusing. I think it should be written as: "Choose one of two effects, it triggers when the condition is met", simply because the card text already suggest that your opponent has to do something in order to trigger. Other than that, I like it. I would suggest having only a few classes that could use this keyword (I personally don't like this for priest). Maybe only Hunter, Druid, Warlock? I feel like those classes match Scheme best.

Unleash (X): I'd love to have this implemented in the game. Magic the Gathering has this as well. It makes keeping unspent mana pay off more. I don't understand desperate lightwielder tho. Why wouldn't I just pay 4 mana instead of having my opponent pull it out for 5? I'd love to see more of this, I think it can be great on spells.
     Thanks for the feedback!
Yeah, maybe the description of Scheme is too long and confusing. I think I will change to what you said. However, I still think rogue is the best fit for this mechanic, even though it is true that Priest does not fit very well. With Unleash, I'm glad you like it! I think it has great potential but needs caeful balance and a shallow number of cards to have it, otherwise the burden of knowledge on the players may be too great. My thoughts behind Desperate Lightwielder were that it could act as a lethal disruptor of sorts. Imagine your opponent has lethal with Bloodlust and you have this in your hand. You can hold it and leave 5 mana unused, so that when your opponent goes for lethal it will be unleashed and get you out of range. This would effectively make him lose a very valuable card without impacting the board as much, and give you time to stabilize. This kind of healing is better than the traditional, in my opinion, and that's why I upped the unleash cost.
Here are some spell examples with unleash. Let me know what you think about them!

posted a message on Expansion Creation Competition- [Phase I Discussion]
