If you wanna skim (wouldnt expect you to read all of it unless you really want to lol) and ask me anything go for it. i'll also go ahead and shameless pander for upvotes and comments to get my deck out there for more people to se.
Awesome, id be really happy to have someone to work on this with. Dragon mage has been a sort of pet project for me (for probably 1000 games with some variation of the deck lol) and I want to bring it to legend one of these days. My personal best, which I actually got earlier today playing tempo mage, is rank 3 and what usually happens is I use a fast deck to get to rank 10 or so, get to rank 5 or 6 with dragon mage, give up, and push with something else haha. Gonna post the deck in a separate comment to make life easier for anyone else reading this.
What's up man. Dragon Mage is my favorite deck and I've gotten it to rank 4 a few seasons ago (that season when dragon priest was popular). I'm in class now but I'd be happy to link my list and theorycraft how to make it fit this Aggro meta
I like the idea of malygos but more commonly I have to use those frost bolts for removal. Twilight drake can definitely be somewhat of a liability vs Aggro but they help a lot when you get a bad starting hand and need a strong turn 4. Against control they are the real mvp though. They dominate mid game vs warrior and usually draw a shield slam or execute especially if I duplicate. Thaurison could be good though I'll try him out
Hey guys. This dragon mage got me to rank 4 last season. I'm posting here to see if anyone has any ideas or critisicm to help me get legend with it. Also, if anyone just wants to try it out take a look at my post in deckbuilder and try it out, its an awesome deck in the right hands. http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/434702-deathwing-dragon-mage
awesome man, glad to hear youre moving up. I think it'll be just fine in standard. without mad scientist it'll be interesting but we can put back in a stronger two drop and most of the time you want to use duplicate on a specific card anyways. no explosive sheep will just be another doomsayer/frost nova and then whatever new heals there are.
oh yeah I also thought this was a funny stat. Overall is still around 60% but im 1-6 vs druids and 6-1 vs warriors lol. I cant wait for druids to get nerfed...
Since you guys are replying so much (which is awesome), i've got some data from my list to share. Every game played from these stats was at rank 5 with maybe one or two at 6 (dropped a little playing other decks.
vs pally: 3-2. one loss was to a murloc pally so 3-1 vs secret/midrange.
vs mage: 2-3. one of the hardest matchups because an inherent weakness of the deck is damage out of hand. its 2-2 vs tempo with an unlucky loss to freeze mage. generally thats an easy matchup but I didnt draw iceblock, healbot, illuminator or alexstraza :(.
vs warrior 2:1. Control warior is easy, particularly when you can bait executes on twilight drakes. Patron is even easier because they dont have as many clears and flamestrike+chillmaw handles both patron plays even if you dont have corruptors or frostbolts handle them.
vs warlock. 6-4. 6-2 vs zoolock, which is an awesome stat in the current meta. Handlock or renolock is a really tough matchup because you tend to fall behind on draw over the course of the game. But warlock has always been a top tier control deck and that is somewhat expected.
vs hunter- 2:0. Not much to say here. steady damage is easy to heal/taunt through and ragnaros lets you win without even having to trip their secrets.
vs priest: 3-3. This truly is a 50/50 matchup. Both are strong control decks and it strongly depends on who can dominate the midgame.
No data vs shaman unfortunately although this is a tough matchup due to damage out of hand.
0-1 vs druid, I wish I had more data here, and 1-0 vs rouge which needs more testing as well.
I prefer 2x twilight drake over corruptor because 1: it helps with dragon synergy, 2: is a better duplicate target and is harder to remove. 3: helps your curve. That being said, corruptor is a super strong card and I may cut an explosive sheep for it. I did drop faerie dragon for a second explosive sheep.
I will say that my priest rate is improving the more I play it. Youve got to embrace a more aggressive mindset than you would vs other classes. Your main win condition is to play alexstraza aggresively with a strong board and go all out face. Generally they are stuck between removing alexstraza and removing your board. If you have saved fireballs and frostbolts it is usually pretty easy to push fatal the following turn if you can get them below 10. A trick I have found useful is to drop a turn 2 doomsayer to kill their early board. This lets you drop a turn 3 technitian or drake and control the board moving forward even if youve gone second. Doomsayer should always be utilized as a way to play your cards onto an open board the following trn and seize control.
yea man monkey priest is tough without a deathwing tech, and even then its iffy. if possible I try to save yesera and deathwing for after monkey so ysera cant be entombed. you really have to win the neutral game without your big cards vs priest which makes it hard. My go-to duplicate card vs priest is twilight drake since its such a strong mid game card and duplicating them buffs them as well :P. Neferian is definitely a sub that I like but i cant figure out what id cut for it..
yeah ive played around with the number of polies and fireballs a LOT, without any definitive answer on whats better. The main reason I keep two it that it allows me to be offensive and fireball in "most" cases works as well at removing targets as polymorph. Control priest used to be an auto win but since they got entomb i have to be a lot more offensive. The win condition there is have a fireball or two in hand, play alexstraza on him and go face with whatever is on my board. Fireball x2 helps me clean that situation up pretty reliably. I'd like to hear your thoughts after playing it.
haha man I feel you. I posted that dragon mage earlier and i had a game earlier where im playing an elise priest with like 2 legendaries on board and 3 in hand. I drop deathwing and clear him and he goes "sorry" and plays rend blackhand. duplicate deathwing, i go "sorry", drop the second one and game over hahah.
Hey color, I really like the idea. basically a malygos ohk deck that stalls like a control deck instead of a freeze mage. I think either your suggestion or the one I posted would both work really solidly for him, just depends on which archetype he goes with.
Tell me what you guys think. Right now im 10-6 with the deck starting at rank 5. The only card I think might make its way out of the deck is fairy dragon for something like explosive sheep, ironbeak owl, or bgh. Everything else has a pretty deliberate place, after I've played several hundred games using this archetype over the last few months. That being said, i'm very open to any and all suggestions to help me push this deck over the lip from rank 5 to legend! Also, it will remain largely unharmed in standard, only losing mad scientist, healbot and illuminator. losing MS will hurt but the others will be easily exchanged for whatever new heal cards come out.
edit*- i'm strongly considering a second blackwing corruptor instead of fairey dragon, it might hurt your curve vs aggro but its just such a strong card. Good body+ frostbolt for 5 mana can't be overlooked.
