Omg finally someone said it. I've experienced this multiple times. Players emoting and roping turn 1 or every single turn while i know they are there not afk. Either that or they hold onto lethal till the rope is about to end just to kill me? I really don't understand such negativity and its really poor etiquette when playing like this i feel. I wish there was some way to report intentional roping but I doubt there ever will be
Etiquette works in all ways. Roping, spamming emotes, of course. But also playing top tier decks (or extremely true and tested archetypes with no novelty whatsoever in the decklist) in non-competitive formats should count as well.
So, as far as I'm concerned, if you play aggro paladin in casual I feel totally entitled to give you back the poorest gaming experience imaginable. It's called retribution.
That said, most of the time they're just idiots that apparently can only feel relevant by annoying people.
What deck were you playing? When I queue against some joker who just wants to spam cheap cards to finish a quest quickly, I pay them back for wasting my time.
I see this frequently, too, and I really don’t understand the reason for it. Do they expect me to concede just because they’re frustrating me? That’s not happening; I want to win as much as they do, I just won’t descend to such rude tactics. The last thing I’m going to do is concede.
Blizzard just doesn’t do enough to police this game and discourage players from annoying others. It’s too easy to avoid the AFK timer by hitting end turn at the last possible moment every turn. Blizzard should be able to detect play patterns like that and warn or censure players who engage in them.
Well, only a few people have responded and we already have two people here who admit they rope against players when they don't like the deck that their opponent is playing. That's how petty people can be and it's... just human nature, I'm afraid.
The best thing you can do when you face a troll like that, is mute them and play as you normally would. Don't react by roping back. Don't emote. Anything that confirms to them that you're annoyed, will just make them happy. They only want to feel like they have power over you, so just don't give them anything. They may rope for the rest of your game regardless, but at least they haven't gotten any satisfaction and will be less likely to do it again next game.
I honestly just 'Squelch', then keep playing until I win. That's when I unsquelch and throw a quick 'Thank You' before ending them. No need to drag it on either with BM. You can usually recognize fun opponents by the decks they're playing, sad to see that it's almost a treat seeing anything other than meta decks copied from top players.
often ropers are not playing to win, so you should be able to win, as a bonus you spend time in a ranked game that you can win... so enjoy the reward track XP you gonna get!

“That's when I unsquelch and throw a quick 'Thank You' before ending them.” While I agree with the rest of your message (especially the part about the meta) I think taunting ‘thank you’ before ending is also poor “sportsmanship” for lack of a better word. It’s not as bad as roping but it also aims to aggravate. I mean, I also do it sometimes, when I win against after facing the same tier-S deck but let’s be honest, it aims to vent frustration/aggravate.
On the other hand, Blizzard doesn’t seem remotely concerned about roping. Chess has a limited timer, I don’t understand why they can’t offer at least a mode with a similar mechanic. They could also drastically shorten round time for the first few rounds. You shouldn’t need more than 20 seconds to pick and play a card at round 1.
There are also players who play the game when they’re busy doing something else. I had a guy once who I conceded against as he was roping every turn. Following a friend request, I asked him why he was doing that and his reply was: “Sorry, I got both my kids running around”. I think he should’ve just waited until his kids were asleep instead of roping every turn, which is kind of rude.
The best counter for ropers is laundry. You can empty and fill a machine during their turn (if your laundry machine is in your home that is) and you can use the next couple turns on hanging it on the drying rack. You can also make a sandwich or brush your teeth if it's late ;)
Whenever I encounter troll ropers, I just rope them back. They usually stop. But it's easy for me, I have a work to do on my second monitor, and I exclusively play control decks, so I can't care less how much time the match takes...

Let's say you rope to annoy your opponent for whatever reason, but what about the face hovering part? Is it just for extra annoyance or is there more to it? I'm genuinely curious.
Easy fix is to add separate modes for standard and wild, where turns only last 15secs. So, people who likes faster and less annoying games, could enjoy. I dont see any harm?
I don't understand why this community is so toxic. Come on, Hearthstone is a childish cartoonish card game with really simple mechanics. Why people are so mean in this game?
Like just now I faced Hunter roping every time starting at turn 1. I understand at high legend in really tense matchups you might need more time but roping in silver with a class that literally plays 1-2 minions on curve against some off meta decks is plain stupid. I retreated at turn 6 because I value my time more than winning a match at silver.
I'm posting this while in a match with someone who hovers over my face and ropes every turn.
Why do some people do this and how do normal players deal with this situation?
I know this kind of psychotic behavior isn't reportable, so it's really annoying.
Developers' inability to balance is one thing; players choosing to abuse it is another.
I rope evey turn back. But im very very spiteful. I had a game like that run almost 90 minutes once

I once defeated a roping player by playing Nozdormu - Ropers are simple minded players that would be better of playing something without a timer.

Best response yet by far lol

Just half the turn time after every time this happens, don't think it's more complicated than that.
