I still love the game but I got bored of my spending routine since 2014, I'm in my late 20s now, started my life over and need to make some choices. I will be a farmer soon so I need my land and equipment, I will probably have a home soon too. Those cost money and Hearthstone costs me a lot of money as well.
But I had a dream for Hearthstone. In fact, I had two dreams. The dream that I could start the game at 40 health, and the dream that I could build 40 cards decks. Literally yesterday, I was quickly building an old favorite deck, big warrior. There's so many cool synergy cards for big warrior in Wild format right ? And so many early game mitigation cards right ? And so many big minions.. But it turns out, no matter how strong the cards, 30 cards just isn't enough to fit all 3 categories of cards that make big warrior consistent. I knew it. I still played it. I felt it. I hated it.
But now, I get 40 cards AND 40 health as a bonus ? This is insane.
And for all of you who are going to tell me 30 cards is optimal, yes, you are correct for a vast majority of decks. But this doesn't apply to big warrior. Some other decks too that I can't remember right now. You also have to think, how many cards are too few ? 20 cards would obviously be more optimal than 30. Would 5 cards be more optimal than 30 ? In the context of Hearthstone, probably not, notably due to fatigue and lack of value. You see it's not binary, it's not actually a rule at all, that less cards equals more consistency, unless you think consistency alone can win the game, in this case try to win a game with a 2 cards mage deck with 2 Ignite. It's as consistent as it gets and you don't even get fatigue damage. Strong, incremental burn damage. You will probably lose against tavern AI in easy mode.
If there is one thing that makes Renathal a bad card, it's that it costs 1 card of your deck to gain the effect, and that's a pretty big, undervalued cost. Especially considering the possible anti-synergy, with decks like... Yeah I know, big warrior, oh well. I'll find another deck to abuse the 40 cards.
Long story short. I will not quit Hearthstone, I love it, and I hate it.
If this game cost you as much as your job as a farmer should look for a psycologicst to help you with spending addiction.
That's not at all what I said. Is it ? My job as a farmer doesn't cost me any money atm, I'm just an employee and I'm also gonna be a student on top of it for a year before I can start my own company. I don't know if farmer is the right word anyway. We grow organic good on relatively low scale.
And Hearthstone doesn't cost me THAT much, maybe I exaggerated a little bit, I basically buy every expansion normal package (used to be premium package), and sometimes the mini set as well when I'm low on gold and high on life responsibilities.
I do however have a very clear spending addiction especially with loot boxes, I know it and I hate me for it, but I've been pretty good at controlling myself lately. You should have seen me buying those TGT packs back in the days, hundreds of them, those awful golden legendaries I crafted, the entire god damned shaman set crafted in golden up to Un'goro. Altough that's not really the point of this thread at all, thank you for suggesting me to get help. I'm trying to help myself currently. Plan was to quit smoking and quit HS. Maybe I'll just quick smoking and play HS free to play from now on. I have enough cards. But I can't remember the last time I didn't want to play with the new cards. Because it never happened. This is the joy of card games, new possibilities.
If it was only Renathal as a low roll in big decks, you'd just live with it, just like big hunter lives with the risk of pulling Hydralodon from saber, which is usually terrible. The issue i see is Renathal vs Vanndar in big decks, on top of the card pool not being large enough ATM. More likely he'll see play in attrition decks with no serious finisher. Paladin smite decks probably will avoid it for example.
Biggest issue is the combination between size and average quality of the card pool. You end up having to play jank to fill a 40card deck, while also losing consistency. We'll see if Castle launch improves it enough. Interesting either way, larger deck+new cards might make stuff like Hooktusk good enough.
OP, quitting HS would definitely improve your life and wellbeing. If you do it for some months you'll begin to see the change in yourself. I'm not saying to stop playing games, but to start playing some that are not full of greed and bullshit. Don't worry, you'll find them when you stop thinking about HS.
Being a whale is not good in any game. Not even if you're a drug lord that has too much money. There's so much more you could do with it that actually makes a difference. Even using the preorder money + miniset... just check how many games you could buy with that, if this is what you want to do. And many have actual replayability, not hidden behind frustration and other stuff.
1. Based on (and this is coming from you) what you said, you should take a long break from the game. It definitely seems to be more a negative force than a positive.
2. It does apply to big warrior. It applies to everything. Unless by some strange miracle the entire meta returns to a fatigue control one (extremely unlikely), this card is unplayable. 10 health is never worth the lack of consistency.

I haven't played in years, except for some short bursts of arena since that mode has the actual replayability I like. Lately, haven't even played that. The whole diablo bullshit made me puke and i can't digest any blizzard game anymore (together with the bullshit HS has been for a good while).
So yea, i'm talking from experience, not my ass. It's your life and you're free to waste it however you wish, just like everyone else.

You are entirely correct. The issue is currently I can afford to buy any game I want, on top of pre ordering everything from Blizzard. Maybe I should quit all video games for a while. This would improve my life for sure but, do I really want it ? Games have been part of my life since Pokemon Yellow, I don't even know what I am, what I love, without games.

It's worth when the lack of consistency isn't actually one. I tried to explain how more cards can add more consistency to this type of deck, and how this rule is a lot more fluid than it appears at first. Maybe you don't believe it. Maybe you haven't yet endured enough pain from having drawn all your big minions before your summon from deck effects, and you just wish your draw order and minion pool was a little bit less consistent to make your actual strategy more consistent. The deck and the game plan of the deck are different things, basically. Deck is less consistent (obviously, basic maths), but the game plan is more consistent.
Since yesterday I added Renethal to 4 decks, 3 warriors and 1 Priest, and it absolutely feels like I improved the decks, to an almost ridiculous amount. Aggro deck really are hopeless. We'll see later if large sample size can confirm this or not.
Just the +10 health alone you pretty much instantly win against aggro, it's not only 10 more health, it's health that can be recovered, played with. People actually play differently the moment they see renathal in my decks, aggro doesn't go all in on turn 1-2 and play on curve like it used too, and now tries to assemble huge power spikes. And the 40 size deck is brutal against other control decks, they stand no chance. That leaves combo decks, who are virtually unchanged, they will wreck you no matter your health/deck size.
Let me ask you this. Have you experimented with the card a little bit, or are you just assuming it's unplayable because it's an old rule of card games ?
And yeah, I probably should take a break. Maybe I'll enjoy 40 size decks for a while then quit, we'll see. Thanks for all the replies guys, I didn't expect so many people were still reading this dying forum
Just don't be disappointed if the card turns out to be unplayable. So many people were hyped for the return of Reno and look how that turned out.
Reno is still a very good card, it's just that people expect that when you play reno you should win the game instantly like we used to in league of explorers, because value wasn't infinite, but nowadays decks can dish out another 30 damage like it's nothing. It's just the way is it, doesn't make the card unplayable, just not a insane as expected.
And you know what's great about renethal ? It's literally a better reno, it's a reno that activates at the start of the game for 0 mana. Sure you only gain 10 health instead of 15-20, but 0 mana instead of 6 ? That's good !
Look at what people actually expected when reno was first revealed, do you remember ? Everyone was saying "this card is trash, it lowers consistency, it's unplayable, why would anyone play 1 copy of cards it's stupid !" well... You can clearly see here how consistency isn't everything, and I think the same holds true for renethal.
It should be pointed out, Reno on launch WAS trash, he didn't see competitive play until the card pool was larger and better stalling tools got printed as well, along with another highlander incentive. That could be the case somewhat with Renathal as well, he will benefit a lot from a 6set meta instead, so you can play 39 GOOD cards.

Good point, but as a Wild player, that's none of my concern, right now I don't need good cards, I need DECK SLOTS. And it still invalidates the idea that decreasing the consistency of your deck is always under any circumstance a bad idea. It's not true with Reno and it's not true with Renathal.

Good luck with that! Took them a billion years to add what, 9 slots? Gonna be 2050 before we get more.

I think people appreciated how powerful Reno could and would turn out to be though, even though the card pool wasn’t strong enough to make highlander decks at the time.
I honestly can’t foresee a use for Renathal. There’s a big downside in having an extra 10 cards no matter how strong the pool is, and 10 health is not nearly as much of an upside as being able to heal to 30 at any point in the game.
Hope I’m wrong because I do enjoy longer games, but I don’t think this card will see competitive play.

You have to spend 6 mana first, though, and draw it, and it costs a card in your hand. It's nowhere near "at any point in the game" and you know it if you've ever played a Reno deck against aggro :P Renathal "healing" is arguably less powerful (on average, not all the time, sometimes Reno heals less than 10, sometimes 0), but it is also free of mana, doesn't need to be played from hand and always happens on turn 1.
And the downside of having 1 copy of each card is arguably a bigger downside than having +10 cards in your deck I think. I'd like to hear what other people think though, it's a very interesting question. But for me, if i'm building a control deck, and I need to pick between Reno and Renathal for mitigation, and I'm not building for fun only for the win, I go with Renathal every time, every day, every class, and god knows how much I love building and playing Reno decks. In Wild I mean, maybe things are different in standard with the very limited card pool, but that should make Reno even worse.
And yet some people will figure out a playable deck that runs both cards, imagine that !
My suggestion if you enjoy longer games is don't bother with the idea that is see competitive play or not, go build Renathal decks right now, get a feel of how he works, what cards and packages will synergize best with him, and make the best deck you can out of this card. Will it be a tier 1 deck ? Probably not. Tier 2 or 3 ? Very likely. Meme deck ? Maybe, doesn't matter if you enjoy it.
I stopped playing HS a couple of months ago and my life has been improved. Too much grinding, and I have many responsibilities in my life. I didn't stop playing other games though, but HS was too frustrating and expensive. Try to quit for a few weeks and see how you feel about it.

I did quit for a few weeks multiple times before, even months one time, I think I missed 5 or 6 seasonal card backs in total since 2014, and yes it did feel good, but it felt better coming back..

I seriously need 27 slots for each class, there's a LOT of cards in Wild, so many nuances to each deck, so many decks to begin with..
I'm at a point where I switch between 4 different win conditions for my overload quest shaman just for fun, because I can't afford 4 deck slots for 1 deck. Have you tried Zentimo + quadruple Stormstrike ? It's a lot of fun

Fair point that you have to pay for it and draw it, but it’s still a much bigger upside than starting with 10+ health when you do have access to it.
And I’m not sure about the second point. The downsides are different. In terms of card draw, Reno damages the chances of you consistently drawing any one card, this isn’t true for legendaries since you can only run one anyway. Playing with a 40 card deck damages the chances of you specifically drawing a certain legendary hugely, whilst also damaging the chances of you drawing any other card, albeit to a lesser degree than a Reno deck would.
The disadvantages of whether you could actually create a singleton deck or a 40 card deck without adding weak cards just depends on what’s in the pool. With the card pool being as vast as it is even now, I don’t imagine that you’d have to put in any atrocious cards in either case. But I think each card would hurt certain classes more than others.
