I made this tread to make it clear for everyone how much gold you can obtain between each expansion. And show that the game is fairly F2P if you know where to look. But this also means you have to start somewhere, (before the release of an expansion and playing trough it without using any gold, but purely saving it up for an upcoming expansion). This can be very frustrating for newer players because some people at rank 20 already have a decent collection. So I was relieved when Blizzards announced they would add rank 25-50 for newer players so they wouldn't get stomped on at rank 20 despite just starting the game.
I am by no means good in math and this is just a raw preview of how I calculated it. If you are better at math or can give me feedback on what I did wrong please tell me.
First of all I started with counting and calculating the amount of days between each expansion.
2014-2015 Naxx (Curse of Naxxramas) 139 Days GvG (Goblin vs Gnomes) 115 Days BRM (Black Rock Mountain) 144 Days TGT (The Grand Tournament) 80 Days LoE (League of Explorers)
On average this would be around 119 days between each expansion, but because these include Adventures and some releases between expansions are very short and some are very long I did not take these in my final calculation.
2016 WoToG (Whispers of the Old Gods) 107 Days Kara (One Night in Karazhan) 112 Days MSG (Mean Streets of Gadgetzan) 126 Days Un'goro (Journey to Un'goro)
On average this would be around 115 days between each expansion and it would follow the standard concept of 3 expansions in a year.
2017 Un'goro (Journey to Un'goro) 126 Days KFT (Knights of the Frozen Throne) 119 Days KaC (Kobolds and Catacombs) 126 Days WW (The Witchwood)
On average this is 123 days between each expansion
2018 WW (The Witchwood) 117 Days TBP (The Boomsday Project) 119 Days RR (Rastakhan's Rumble) [Presumably] 121 Days Unknown expansion
I compared release dates from other expansion with eachother and noticed that since 2017 Blizzard tends to release the Hearthstone expansions on a Thursday, and the 1st expansion of each year normally is released in early April so I did a little math and think the next expansion will be released on either 4th April 2019 or 11th April 2019 (Keep in mind this is nowhere near confirmed). To get my average days on 2018 I set the release date of the next expansion on 4th April 2019 making it 121 days between Rastakhan's Rumble and the Unknown expansion coming to an average of 119 days.
If we now take the average of all 3 years 115 + 123 + 119 / 3 we get an average of 119 days. This is the number i'm going to do my calculations with concerning how much gold you can accumulate between each expansion.
You get a free quest every day.
1/4 you get a 60g quest.
3/4 you get a 50g quest.
Presumably you have a chance to get Play a Friend! every 5 days (I used 7 days as my median).
With this information we know we could get 50 * 119 = 5950g between each expansion from just the 50g quests.
You have a 16,5% chance to get a 60g quest so this would be 119 / 100 * 16,5 to an average of 20, 60g quests between each expansion, but since there is a chance to reroll your quest (83,5 / 100 = 0,835 * 83,5 = 69,7%) you get an 30% (altough it is still a gamble so 30% theoretically is still not correct) chance to get a 60g quest making it 40, 60g quests you can do between each expansion.
This means you could get 2.400g from 60g quest, but these will take up 40, 50g quests wich will result in 5950 - 2000 + 2400 = 6350g
Now onto the 80g quests (according to the wiki 80g quests have a chance to pop up once every 5 days (because this is really hard to determine I am using 7 days as my median). So calculating 119 / 7 = 17 wich makes 17* 80 = 1360g from 80g quests and we also have to substract the 50g quests from it wich would be 17 * 50 = 850g
This means you can get up to 1360g from 80g quests, these will take up 17,50g quests wich results in 6350 - 850 + 1360 = 6860g
We also have 3 100g quests wich have a 6,25% chance of appearing that would be 119 / 100 * 6,25 to an average of a whopping 7, 100g quests you can obtain between each expansion and since you can reroll your quests that would be (93,5 / 100 =0,935 * 93,5 = 87,4%) you have an 12,6% of getting a 100g quest. Adding up to 14, 100g quests between each expansion.
This means you could get 1400g from 100g quests between each expansion, these would take up 14, 50g quests wich results in 6860- 700 + 1400 = 7560g.
We also have a 6,25% chance of getting a quest that rewards a pack (Watch and Learn!, Spelunker and Catch a Big One!) This means 119 / 100 * 6,25 to an average of 7 quests that reward a pack that you can obtain between each expansion and since you can reroll your quests that would be (93,5 / 100 =0,935 * 93,5 = 87,4%) you have an 12,6% of getting a quest that rewards a pack. Adding up to 14 of thosequests between each expansion.
This means you could get 14 packs between each expansion, these would take up 14, 50g quests resulting in a loss of 700g. That results in 7560 - 700 = 6860 and 14 packs. (Wich would be priced at 100g each)
Every win you get also gives you 3,33g but will only be acquired in totals of 10g when you reach 3 wins. You can at max gain 100g per day from wins calculated this would be 100 * 119 = 11.900g between each expansion if you manage to get 30 wins in one day. (please read this very carefully, all I am saying is that this is the maximum amount of gold you can get between expansions, this number should be filled in, in proportion to your own free time).
This means you can get 6860 + 0 ~ 11.900 = 6860g ~ 18.760g wich gets you 68 ~ 187 packs between each expansion if you manage to save all gold you earned.
Note* Blizzard also adds events periodically wich would give even more rewards in the form of gold, packs and cards/dust. It is really hard to predict/calculate these winnings and add them to the average gold you can acquire between expansions.
I hope I did my math right and the numbers in this thread turn out somewhat right, if you see something that is not right or something that is missing please give me feedback of it.
Edit* Appearantly I made a HUGE miscalculation at the beginning (50 * 119 = 18.450) I think I took the total days of a year (my bad). I edited it and now it looks more "real". Still keep in mind that these numbers can fluctuate A LOT.
Lets be percise, a new player wont save from start of an expansion he will save at the announce of the next expansion, prob 5 days ago. (In this case rastakhan)
So if we calculated the time between the announce and the release it will be about 30 days, So if you get 50gold quest everyday(unfortunately) you will 1500 Gold
So new players, Start saving from now
You will get AT LEAST 1500 gold (with out calculation of wins nor more gold quests) wich means 15 packs
Thats so much better than starting an expansion with 3-5 packs.
Making averages then proceeds to assume 30 Wins per day , nice logic!
Also Play a Friend can grant 160g if the Quest is Traded
As I said im not the best in math, should I have done it differently? Because Quests and Wins count seperatly right, they have no influence on eachother.
As someone who barely plays ranked (except for first 2-3 weeks after expansion launches) but regularly completes daily quests, I usually manage to save about 7-8k gold between expansions. Sure, that could easily be 18-20k if I farmed 30 wins every day but I don't have that much time.
Dude, 50 * 119 = 5.950. Where did you get those 18000 from?
Realistically, an average person starts gold saving halfway through the expansion because of their arenas and the fact that they are still opening packs.
So let's cut this from 120 to 60 days.
And a normal person does not get 30 wins every day, a normal person works. Let's be optimistic and put 9. (I personally with college and daily obligations only get 3)
I don't get a challenge a friend quest once in a week. Maybe 2 in a month is more accurate.
Additionally I seldom get the 60 g quests. Most times only by rerolling every time but often I end up with thrice 50 g. I respect your effort but your numbers are castles in the sky.

I know what you mean, I also don't get the Challenge a Friend quest that often.I think the only way to really know the odds if 100 people would work together and note their findings for and enitre time between expansion I think you would get better numbers.
And what I said:
You have a 16,5% chance to get a 60g quest so this would be 119 / 100 * 16,5 to an average of 20, 60g quests between each expansion, but since there is a chance to reroll your quest (83,5 / 100 = 0,835 * 83,5 = 69,7%) you get an 30%(altough it is still a gamble so 30% theoretically is still not correct)
I used common math and did the same calculation as if you were tossing coins [1st is 50/50, 2nd is still 50/50 but the odds of getting the one you want increases overall]
It is just really hard to come up with the right numbers.
Also calculating with 30wins/day is just ridiculous. If you are totally F2P you cann get about 6-8k Gold in between. Most of the time this is more than enough to get a decent collection to play many of the new Top Decks.
The Thread- Creater made some strange Mathematically mistakes, as allready quoted. Its possible to collect betwenn 4000 to 8000 Gold between Expansions for regular players. If you are really spending much Time and play 30 Games a Day, this amount can come up to 12000 to 15000. Much more is impossible. 30000 (witch is 300 Gold a day) is impossible!
Bad calculations. U should never think 30 wins a day. I play 10 games max a day. Imagine getting 30 wins. With a 55% wr u would have to play at least 50 matches. 10 mins per game its 500min i dont have that much time per day.if u have that then u should rethink ur way of life cause u are certainly neglecting something important

????????????
Edit: I mean, math or meth?
I'm simple guy. so this is my calculation:
When I'm lazy : 60golds/days x 120 days = 7200 golds
In farming mode 100g/days x 120 days = 12000 golds.(never achieve it)
On average normally I only get around 2000g/ month. So, around 60-70pack+ bonus packs for each expansion.
Yep, you have an error.
My avg is around 6k or so, it fluctuates depending on my free time and if blizzard does a promo event for double gold etc.
also extremely short Rock Paper Scissors brawls get me my 30 win gold cap when they come around
As I said im not the best in math, should I have done it differently? Because Quests and Wins count seperatly right, they have no influence on eachother.

60 *, 25 * 60 = 900
60 *, 75 * 50 = 2,250
60 * 3 * 10 = 1,800
So on average 5k, not counting the extras.
Which allows you to buy more or less the same amount of packs that are sold in the pre sale. (HS still f2p)
who has the error? the OP or mr. Rapidosamurai? because I get 5950 gold if you have 50G quests * 119 days...
My average between sets is (after taking 200g per month for arena) around 7000g... so 70 packs per expansion.
To live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffer!
I don't get a challenge a friend quest once in a week. Maybe 2 in a month is more accurate.
Additionally I seldom get the 60 g quests. Most times only by rerolling every time but often I end up with thrice 50 g. I respect your effort but your numbers are castles in the sky.

Jesus. The lengths some people will go to, the hours and effort they’re prepared to put in to save $50 never ceases to amaze me.
